They always take you on a fun ride, multiple elements perfectly inserted at the perfect time - extraordinary talent that was underrated and underheard.
Supertramp was the prog band that could write a seriously catchy hook; their songs are both clever and fun. With "Give a Little Bit," the hook and the smooth joy of the song have picked me up when not much else could have. "School" and "Bloody Well Right" open their concept album _Crime of the Century_ and are musically brilliant. More Supertramp, Daniel; please!
Supertramp were a great English rock band formed in 1969. They had so many great songs in the 70's-80's such as "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America", "Goodbye Stranger", "Take The Long Way Home", "Dreamer" "Give A Little Bit", "It's Raining Again", "Bloody Well Right", "My Kind Of Lady", "Cannonball", "I'm Beggin' You", "You Win, I Lose" etc.
great tune by a great group. thanks AND great reaction
That smile on your face as you keep being surprised is exactly what they were going for. So many of these songs have a "happy" feeling even on serious subjects.
It sounds like the singer is trying to sell the free love thing to a heartbroken groupie. Great guitar solo and that Supertramp perfection. Great reaction. Great band.

I agree! As much as I love Supertramp, I never liked the lyrics to this song. I always felt he had a huge amount of disdain for whoever he is speaking to in the song! It's fun, musically, and I don't think I've ever "skipped it", but it still makes me uncomfortable!

@@MissAstorDancer there is a person in these comments that said the song is about giving up pot, which I think makes more sense to me now. It’s weird because like you said I was always turned off but maybe it’s a happy song after all.

Back in 1979 this song would come on the radio about every 10 minutes. Not that anyone minded. Supertramp were an excellent band, and built their brand around the distinctive sound of the Wurlitzer electric piano that few other bands were using in the mid-late 70s. Great song, off of a great album.
I love this band, all of their music is great. I appreciate the human elements of finger snapping and whistling it. It really adds an "alive or casual factor" and taking away the studio sterility I often feel in official videos. He is a musician on the road, the one night stand is just business in so many ways. He is fulfilling someone else's fantasy but for him, it is just another night of winding down after the intense rush of doing a show. Thank you for reacting to this great band and song.
I love how the song 🎵 is a sweet way of saying see ya
My damn theme song! I never look behind me my troubles will be few!
Oh my bringing back memories 🙂
Great react. Supertramp is amazing and their albums are so good!
Daniel I Love this Band and this song !! Great pick !!
Ahhhhhh. The soundtrack of my youth. That opening music is soooooooo choice.
I saw Rodger Hodgson tour with Ringo Starr in 2001 (same tour with Greg Lake). Great lineup that included Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople), Lake, Hodgson, Howard Jones, Sheila E. and Mark Rivera (Billy Joel's band). The 2 Supertramp songs they performed were "The Logical Song" and "Give a Little Bit". I needed to jog my Swiss Cheese memory, and it doesn't like cardio.

I'd be surprised if he performed this since it's a Rick Davies song.
When I was young, living in the California foothills, Supertramp was recording in little Nevada City CA. We were intrigued and blown away; I always remember that when I hear this band.
One of the greatest bands ever and I had the privilege of seeing them live and it was awesome. Great reaction that I really enjoyed it thank you

Breakfast In America is a perfect album front to back. Always loved the guitar solo in this... Roger Hodgson was always just known by many as one of their keyboard playing lead singers (he was piano and vox on "Take The Long Way Home") but he was their lead guitar. He's really been a great underrated guitarist. "The Logical Song" would be the next logical (sorry lol) pick from this album.
After Take The Long Way Home, this would be my next favorite by them. Love the different vocal styles. The whistling is cool. Very good track. I love the whole album:)
Great song, love this band. More Supertramp please. this whole album is great. Crime of the Century is another whole album worth listening to and Even in the Quietest Moments. Too many songs to list, also anything from Live in Paris 1979. I saw them live a couple times in the late 70's and they were excellent in concert! Thanks Daniel, great job as always.
Great song
You need to see this live. Rick Davies on the piano/keyboard and Roger Hodgson on the electric guitar (Solo is cool). Live in Paris 1979 concert, on KZread, will have this song in it.
The outro guitar solo is a masterclass in simplicity feeling like perfection, possibly aided by the tension that was built through the song. The initial single note played over 8 or 16 bars is reminiscent of The Who’s I Can See For Miles (which had a single note as the entire solo).
Roger Hodgson on guitar outtro...phenomenal...
This is what we call a "Sleeper" song - Starts out slow and smooth, and finishes rough and strong.
"Give a little bit" was my all time favorite back in the day.
Man, I love the lane you're traveling down the last couple of days. Classic, progressive, legendary picks. Like an infusion of adrenaline for my #1 channel!
My favorite of their albums is the "Live in Paris"
I love that there is little to no bass until a minute and a half into the song so you forget its even a thing and then it comes in on a super tight riff.
Love these guys. Shoutout to my Uncle Ricky that got me into Supertramp when I was a kid.
A Supertramp classic with a fantastic outro. Btw, I didn't realize until recently what the "city" behind the waitress on the album cover really was.
Oh if only we had a Supertramp on the scene now... This song and Rudy as well as Crime of the Century are I think 3 of a kind. But then they did other stuff like Its Raining Again which is so sweet. They really were the progressive Rock band that moved into the popular music space and stayed.
Daniel, thank you for your reaction! Every song on "Crime of the Century", "Crisis? What Crisis?" and "Even In The Quietest Moment" albums are well worth reactions! Cheers,
It's just such a great joy to watch you experiencing and appreciating such great music from the day! Bro, back in the day, I had long hair, I was skinny like you, and I totally loved hearing the greatest tunes of the era! Thanks for sharing, commenting!
This album came out in my senior year of college. I wore that vinyl record OUT! Supertramp was my jam for years.
With so many love songs around, I like both this and Paul Simon’s excellent 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover as explorations of the emotions or lack of them when disentangling from intimacy.
Even in the Quietest Moments is a good one.

“Child of Vision” is another epic track from this album.
I love this song. I have always loved the bass in this song.
Supertramp always had an incredible production value. While definitely a " one night stand" number the production elevates it into something more. Great job Daniel 🎶 thank you ! Oh...still plinking away...
I ADORED Supertramp. Living in London 1980, they really stood out. A shame the two lead singers didn’t get on. Chalk and cheese.
I can see you creating a song like this....it's your style!!! Yes!!! Supertramp!!! Rush!!!! maybe Harry Chapin!!! James Taylor!!!! a little funk!!!! Yeah I can see you putting a series of song that honor and sound similar to these artist!!!! OOOOoooooooouuuuuu....yeah....Can't wait to see it!!!! oh and Bro...it's raining here in Northern California...in Orangevale......and it's cold....like 59 degrees.
I was surprised at the lack of "turn it up!" at 5:30
That song represented my brother to me back in the 70s...🤣🤣🤣 he couldn't be faithful if he tried...my mum used to say to him.."you wanna watch what you're doing lad, "it's" gonna shrivel up and fall off one day" 🤣🤣🤣 he used to CRINGE when she said that... 😊
This album brings back so much memory. Back in the summer of 1988, I was returning home from Montreal with friends after a week of camping out in Canada and a radio station out of Montreal played the entire album on the ride home till we got to the NY border. Thanks, Canada!
This an early morning song for me for some reason. I can say with honesty, I heard this song more than any other song after being up all night & very much worse for wear, in the early mornings! LOL! It's a great song, don't get me wrong, but it's my shuffle home with my tail tucked between my legs song. Gives me a strange sense of familiarity, although a little foggy! lmao! 'Oh young man, rejoice in thy youth'!!!!!!
Breakfast in America. My fave was Take The Long Way Home and Logical Song. That would be up your street.
Child Of Vision…..live from Paris. Super trump at their height and some of the best piano work out there
I think you would enjoy "Fool's Overture". There is a lot of amazing work from them. Just amazing!
"Fool's Overture," "A Soapbox Opera," "Even In The Quietest Moments" "School," "Rudy," and "Crime Of The Century" are all brilliant epics... Supertramp is worth returning to!! "Breakfast In America" is excellent and is still only their 4th best album... the previous three are where it's at! Cheers!

@@lydiabentley3413 Hi, Lydia. I don't know your age or how much you've listened to Supertramp but they are my favourite band of all time - and that's saying a lot because I love so many groups and individual rock musicians from the 1960s, '70s and '80s. If you like School you'll probably love pretty much every song, like I do, from their five consecutive albums starting with the all-time classic Crime of the Century through Famous Last Words. Do yourself, especially your ears and soul, a favour, and listen to all of them. You'll be glad you did. Feel free to let me know what you think of certain songs if you go on this sonic journey.

@@timwhitnell7145 hi Tim thank you for your comment which I read with great interest. I do think Supertramp I want is the greatest bands and I have seen them live but it was a long time ago. My favourite band at the moment is dire straits but I will listen to some more Supertramp and get back to you. Let me know if you like Dire Straits. It was good to hear from you and thanks
Andy & Alex loved this song.
you could argue that this is Supertramp's version of "free bird".
Their song Bloody Well Right is phenomenal if you haven't checked it out, great video man.
I always thought that this song is a companion to Dion's The Wanderer. Both songs are catchy as hell, but ultimately the main characters are doomed to live lonely lives because they think that if they don't have any responsibilities they can stay young.
Awesome album!
A Supertramp song, is always a fun ride. There's always something unexpected around the corner. For a 'fun fact', you should look up the meaning of the word Supertramp ( unless you already know, of course ), it's a very clever band name I think.
If you want a deep track that shows Supertramp's prog roots and is also a epic length track (12 minutes) check out Try Again from their 1970 debut album.
*Now, some they do and some they don't // And some you just can't tell And some they will and some they won't // With some it's just as well* Supertramp has some of the cleverest/most fun lyrics anyone wrote. Breakfast in America makes a great addition to anyone's album collection.
Breakfast is the album that was a massive hit for them, especially in the US. Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments are the albums that got me through high school. I especially loved Dreamer off Crime and From Now On from Moments.
Polite, thoughtful, and understated. If you aren't Canadian... ...well; you should be. Thank you for your analysis.
you have to listen to the logical song supertramp best song ever
Logical Song is very relevant to today's insanity.
Hope you dive deeper into Supertramp. So many more fantastic songs by them! The whole Crime of the Century album is a prog masterpiece. You haven't even heard the best from them.
Love me some Supertramp! Would love to hear you dissect the lyrics of 'The giant of Illinois' by The Handsome Family. Will you except the challenge? :)
If you like this song, and Take the Long Way Home, then you will love Supertramp's most famous song The Logical Song!
While Breakfast in America was more popular in the USA, i think most people feel that their 1974 album Crime of the Century was their masterpiece, although a bit darker and more serious in tone.
please consider checking out the live version of this it's really great. The base drives the whole thing
I think you would appreciate "Dreamer" by Supertramp an incredibly odd song but in a really good way
Love this song
.......and off into the distance does the stranger dance, not looking back. A happy cad? Salty.
Goodbye Stranger it's been nice Hope you find your paradise.
One of my favorite bands! I always felt this song was about one-night-stands -- like the women they meet on the road etc. Please consider reacting to "Bloody Well Right" and "School"! While you were dissecting “Gooodbye Stranger” by Supertramp. I noticed a mention of The Office Steve Carell aka Michael Scott sings “Goodbye Toby” a parody of Goodbye Stranger in episode 18 season 4. I saw it. Funny. Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane was my favorite hook, my friends & I would sing that part. Goodbye Stranger was on radio in heavy rotation back in the 70’s & 80’s. Great reaction. I enjoyed it.
The most underrated band imo. Nowhere near as embedded in the public consciousness as they should be.
Logical Song is very relevant to tp
try some Rick Davies Supertramp classics next, Bloody Well Right and From Now On!
Just give me motion and set me free 😆
The lyrics works perfectly fine on the surface as a relationship story, or lack thereof, but in later years I've come to see it also, on a deeper level, as someone leaving a drug-filled or drug-fueled life, because of the clever use of the names Mary and Jane. For a possible similar usage, see Tom Petty''s early hit Mary Jane's Last Dance.

Better ending to an album is " Crime of the Century" from the album of the same name.
This song came out right before AIDS happened, in 1979. Things were different, much freer, perhaps more sleazy.

I lol'd when you said "he understands there's a universal code of ethics, but..." to which I replied out loud "but he's a baby boomer so he doesn't give a f**k" this could be a boxset, romanticized musical odes to consequenceless sex and entitlement lololol
