Children growing up, old friends growing older...gets me every time. Perhaps Rush’s most commercial pop song, but still with their typical depth and quality.. Neil’s drum phrasing adds so much to the song’s momentum..

I think this is the first time Rush had a guest singer involved with a song. The guest singer is Aimee Mann who had a big hit called 'Voices Carry' with the band Til Tuesday.

This song always makes me well up. When it was released my father had recently died, and he used to comment how Rush (and Genesis)were the only bands whose albums I played, that he could appreciate. Our last family holiday before he died, I had been paying Exit Stage Left on cassette in his car all the time, and he used to hum along to Spirit of Radio. A year or so after he died, I was playing this song, and my mum came into the room with tears in her eyes saying "Your dad would have loved this song"

I'm getting pretty old almost 60 and not very healthy pretty sure I don't have many summers left anyway I had a daughter when I was 53 the love of my life I always wanted that kind of unconditionall love like she has for me and me for her but lately she's been coming up to me hugging me and crying saying I don't want you to die I need you and I just tell her I'm not don't worry but I know I'm am and feel bad for what she's going to go through and I try to freeze all my moments with her and make sure she knows and never forgets how in the last years of my life having her has made me the happiest I've ever been and she made me feel more loved than I thought was possible. Anyway rush has been apart of almost every stage of my life and has gotten me through a lot with their music and words. Now I'm playing all of my favourites for her hoping they help her like they did me and thank her everyday for being my daughter. But right now I wish time would stand still and I take each hug and kiss and moments with her a lot more important and precious because my experiences are slipping away and I want her impressions of me to be a little bit stronger so she always will know that she's my hero.

This song takes on extra meaning when considering that Neil always assumed he would have the time to enjoy retirement years. Fate had other plans. For all of Neil's accomplishments and achievements, Neil had his share of tragedies and then some. Take time to stop and smell the roses people. You never know how much time you have. Prioritize what's REALLY important.

"Experience slips away" could also mean...as one event leads to the next in a fast-paced life, experiences can get lost or not fully absorbed. As for 2112, the album wasn't an F-U to the record company in particular, though they were under pressure. It was more of a "We're just gonna do what we would have done either way and if it doesn't work, so be it." The album isn't a reaction to the pressure, but the insistence on staying true to themselves is.

Neil was a big fan of personal interpretation of his lyrics, even though he took a lot of time and care with his lyrics, he thought it was cool that someone could come out with a totally different interpretation, fun fact this is Neil in his Ludwig (Drums) phase which IMO sounds way better than the DW's.

"Learns to live as every step is the end" is simply appreciating every moment and experience. "Summer going fast, nights growing colder, children growing up, old friends growing older" is just the passage of seasons and time. You're a young guy, so check out"Dreamline", kind of similar theme, but u may connect with it a bit more as it speaks to "when we are young". Neil sure got u thinking though, as he did all of us. If you've never gone on a pilgrimage or mission trip, then you haven't experienced that moment that feels like an end unto itself, when you simply pause and time stands still. For example, I've taken youth on mission trips to work on Native American reservations. We all pack into vans, the youth give up their phones and for 10 days, the whole outside world doesn't exist as they form intimate Christian community. Every year, the trips are similar, yet completely different. I have photos of all of them. There's the we're getting ready to leave and we don't know each other, followed by the funny van photos as they are getting to know each other. Then there's the arrival photos at the reservation... finally the I'm so glad to be home photos. Each one of those weeks are a time stand still moment. Same when you go on pilgrimage. Each stop at a vista, a church, a museum, a holy site, an amusement park, a new baseball stadium has that moment of arrival when time for a moment stands still and you breathe in and say, I've arrived. Then you move on to the next stop. And, yes there will be a moment when I can't treasure the youth on Mission trips. For my father it was after 38 years. Great pick-up on the camera trying to capture them. Beginning of the digital age.

But u are right they are in motion and she as she sings time stand still tries to capture the moment. Thanx. Also your description of their songs having a sense of longing is dead on. He's wishing he could "freeze the moment", make "the experience" last a little bit longer, but time just keeps moving and all of our "experiences", that we experience, just slip away into the past. If only we could make time stand still, just for a little bit. Freeze this moment "a little bit longer". Make each sensation "a little bit" stronger. Just a little bit. The video is kinda silly, but the song is beautiful.

When I get a chance to just sit and enjoy the company of the people in my life. I wish I could make time stand still. "As if each step was the end" A career in EMS definitely let me know that tomorrow is not a given. "Experience slips away" Career wise we all begin to lose our edge over time. Idk? I just know that it's best to enjoy life and the people in it while you can, because before you know it life has passed you by. Enjoy your breakdowns. They're refreshing✌

My good man, you really 'get it' for one so young - and that is impressive! And seeing as you get it, you will absolutely LOVE Rush, and all that Neil has to offer lyrically! His social commentary has mostly been on point, especially through the 80's and after. The 70's had a bunch of sci-fi/fantasy inspired epics, which were great, don't get me wrong, but especially staring with 2112, Neil began his analysis of the human condition. Keep up the GREAT reviews. Just based on your Rush reviews alone, you've found a subscriber!

I am writing a second comment as my initial comment was at he beginning of the video and I want to touch on one of the things you pointed out how "experiences slip away"... and how you say that most of us think of experiences as things that we accrue... and I agree but want to add that as we live our lives linearly and go from one experience to another that we can lose experiences or to say it another way, we can forget things that we've learned or experienced we've had. I also think people conflate "wisdom", "knowledge", "intelligence", "experiences" and sometimes just "data"... these are all distinct words or constructs worth understanding the unique definitions. Great video again, Thanks! Joe

Never learned much theory, but could play MANY musical instruments. No idea why or how but from early childhood music just made sense! Love your deep dives & analysis as well as your humility! It’s easy for people from my era (late 70s) to be critical of how newer generations examines music LOL! We grew up probably from grade school listening our favorite musicians over & over pulling them apart trying to define the core of what moved us. Stoner, Motor Head, Jock, Drama Geek etc WE ALL DID IT! Defending the “looming threat” POV, when you’ve lost enough friends or family it becomes a conscious thought to pop its head up & occur-and serves a good reminder... Appreciate what you have, while you have it, remaining ready for what’s to come!

I think I agree with a previous post that focussed on how moments and experiences are fleeting, and once felt they rapidly fade. The excitement and multitude of other emotions and sensations any of us might feel in a particular moment of great joy, excitement, or other experience are never repeated in quite the same way, even if similar circumstances arise, and our memories of even our most extreme experiences fade and pale into insignificance against the intensity of being 'in that moment'. For me then, "Time Stand Still" is Neil's, possibly sad, acknowledgement of the ephemeral nature of our experiences - make the moment last a little longer, make the feeling a little stronger - make my memory of the moment somehow more potent so that when I try to recall it, to re-experience it, it isn't quite so distanced from the initial instant of experience. We can never achieve that of course, but for Neil, who lost both his first wife and his daughter in the space of around a year I can easily see how one might wish for a more complete ability to recall the moments spent with loved ones or experiences of magical moments...like seeing Rush in concert ;-) I know this song predates Neil's losses in that regard, but knowing what then later happened to him I can't help but feel the connection. Really interesting seeing your reactions and hearing your thoughts - I echo what others have said...and hopefully not in a patronising way, but for one so young you certainly think more than I ever did at that age ;-) Long may that continue!

THE experience slips away. One of those few precious moments that take your breath away and you want it to last forever but time doesn't stop and it slips away. Like getting to listen to my daughter sing along along with Lady Gaga as she drove us through the night back toward our home after learning her cancer was back for the third time in less than 2 years. Yes, the "innocence" is the belief that there will be a tomorrow. There's another Rush song that touches on the same theme (i.e., the perspective gained from aging), and the line from that song is "learning that we're only immortal for a limited time". You learn exactly that, and you learn that thinking that tomorrow is guaranteed is somewhat of an innocent (almost naive) view.

This was always about getting older for me. We always talk about how there just isn't enough time in the day to do all the things we would to do. I can only imagine what lights world be like being in a band. Having to go on tour, in one city today, and another tomorrow. Never getting to see the world you're traveling through; because you have travel, setup, practice, and play live, before packing up and leaving again. No time to enjoy life. No time to enjoy your family, friends, even the music you are making. Life is too short, so time please stand still. The line you are hung up on; I don't think it means what you think it does. You have to remember; Neil was a literary genius, are thinking the line a little too literally. It's kind of like the line; "live as of every day was your last", which tells us you make the midst of our time. In this case; I think if every step is the end of one journey. What what's comes at the end of a journey, a new journey begins. Even experience must end, but new ones add awhile just around the corner. So you embrace each new journey or experience as if it will end soon; as time doesn't give us the time to stop before the next one begins. That being said; if you sit around to long, you just might miss new experiences that await you. You are thinking it's the end of life. I'm thinking the end of one journey.

Of course your 1st reaction to this song is now recorded, no matter times someone watches it it will always be your 1st reaction to it. If it never gets deleted it could make you immortal. By the way Aimee Mann is a talented singer/songwriter in her own right, I have her first 4 albums albums plus a collection of later songs. Her 1st is "Whatever" and her 2nd is "I''m With Stupid".

I read an article written by the “creator” of this video (guy who produced the final product). He wrote that during this time he was in the middle of a closeted drug addiction and mentioned he blew of this (and other) work until just prior to the deadline. He admitted this was a lazy, last minute job and he regretted it. I so wish I could remember the article so I could provide a link, but it escapes me.

I think that what is meant by the ‘step is the end’ relates as an actual truth. Think about it metaphorically, each step (experience) you take will never happen the same way again. That moment is forever lost you can’t rewind or make time stand still so once you take the step you can freeze spacetime so it remains eternal and that step you take will end. So live as it will and try to be better aware end of the step as you were of the beginning. Thinking about it a little more I believe that it also 'the step' refers to the decisions we make. So make your decisions well because one you make a decision "tale a step" it you; to some extent, can't change it. The step and choice of decisions ends.

I was 14 when this song came out. I'm 47 now and I feel the same as I did when I was younger. I was an emotional kid and nostalgic about past summers. More than other kids my age are strangely I was like that at age 7. I do have a better understanding but I always thought like an old man before my 20's. Made some poor choices and wasted years of my life. You don't get those years back. You can work at improving your health. But addiction just takes and if you go too far, your lucky all that's wrong is type 2 diabetes. Addiction to drugs, unhealthy foods, gambling, sex etc... Takes it's toll. Nothing wrong with any of those things in moderation. I know this song isn't about that. Personally for me from listening to this song and band most of my life. I can't side step 15-20 years of my life wasted on destroying myself slowly and at the end fast. Either stop or die. This tune makes me want to live and be my best self. I can still play drums. Now I just gotta quit smoking cigarettes.... expensive disgusting habit...

This song, like a few others, becomes a little more relevant day by day. You may find you lose touch with friends from high school, you may not. You may get wrapped up in your world, see a bit of gray in your hair in the mirror one morning, and wonder how THAT happened. "Summer's going fast , Nights growing colder. Children growing up, Old friends growing older". When I first heard this song in the 80's, I assumed it was talking about the end of one particular summer. It hit me later on, the "Summer's going fast", may be the approaching of middle-age, and "night's growing colder" may be an increasing awareness of one's mortality. Most of all, I love the refrain, "I'm not looking back but I want to look around me now." We are who we are, as a result of every choice we've ever made, and as a result of some experiences that we beyond our control. You can't be truly at peace with yourself unless you accept all that you've done... including various faults, mistakes, things that you used to say "man, I wish I had that one back to do differently." You have to accept this was all part of becoming who you are, in this place, this instant. But I still want to look around me now.

The moving elements (Alex, Geddy and Neil) of the video represent our physical journey through time. Time doesn't stop, it keeps moving. The backgrounds move less to reflect our inability to capture the essence of each moment - whether time spent enjoying nature, or spending time with friends. Ultimately its about how we need to be present in our lives to enjoy our friendships (see more of the people) and enjoy the moments of creation (make each sensation a little bit stronger). Just look at that line - See more of the people and the places that surround me. How do you think you see "more" of someone you already know? See them more frequently? Or perhaps get to know them better? Understand their fears, what makes them happy? Still think Rush is pretty straight forward? lol

Once again, if you have talent in abundance you can play any style of music you want to. Many of the prog groups of the late 60’s and 70’s were able devolve with their audiences as the 80’s progressed. Yes and Genesis also managed to move in this direction.

As far as I know, the only criticism of the music and broadcasting industry that Rush put into their music was the last part of The Spirit of Radio. Starting with the mention of "glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity" to the two closing verses that talk about the "words of the profits* are written on the studio walls" and also "they echo with the sound of salesmen". Both of which, by the way, are a nod to Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence". (* I think it is "profits", because that would be a clever pun and also make sense in context.)

Very poignant song. I loved it when it first came out for the music - I was in my 20s and had my whole life ahead of me. Now in my 50s it has different meaning. In the last week, I just lost my uncle, college friend and high school buddy. Thoughts fly back to many years ago and I can picture them (and many other people and events so clearly). The morale is time flies and it’s best to appreciate each moment in life (good, bad and in between) as precious moments. Experience more, do more, love more, and try to make the most of the time you have. 🙏🤘

Go back and listen to the passage of Subdivisions about losing the race to rats. Time and life can get away from you. You spend so much time building a life you forget to stop and enjoy it. You're a young guy. While you're building it, don't forget to stop and enjoy the people that matter to you. The song has always resonated as a lament to me. Neal Peart's promise to himself to stop working so hard and slow down and take the simple stuff in more.

I take "the innocence slips away" as also your ability to perceive a thing as it truly is, without any jadedness, without any automatic filters, without preconcieved notions.... that slips away. It's not impossible. But it can become harder to do as you get older. You might even find yourself pre-filtering and pigeonholing things around you without even realizing that you've done it. There's certainly other aspects to innocence, other definitions of the word. But I think that's the connotation here. It's harder to hold that openness to events as time goes by.

The definition of experience here is a life event, not the other one--sum total of knowledge and ability. For example, a first kiss, hitting a home run, a child's first steps, etc. As for the video, this was during the height of the MTV era. Every song release required a video for tv. This floating band style was used a few times, notably for the first time by Sting for the song, "Love is the 7th Wave."

Trippy 1980s MTV video .... it meant nothing ... it was just movement on a screen so that you could SEE something while you listened to music - - it was new ... until MTV, you had no images to go with the musical sounds you listened to on radio ... it was just a new 'fad' ...... How many instruments does Geddy play?? More than anyone has any right to .... he is just AMAZING!! With music .... you're never 'wrong' - - music is something that you experience individually, and interpret through your own lense of experience .....
