In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Iona for the first time. The Song is Encircling from the album Journey Into The Morn.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

It's the first time I see someone react to one of my favorite bands of all times: IONA. I am so glad you did, and I loved how you just let yourself sink into the song. IONA is ,in my opinion, the most underrated band I ever heard of. They deserve much more exposure than they ever got. Cheers!

The words to Encircling are taken from an ancient prayer by St. Patrick called the Breastplate. Joanne Hogg is a strong Christian whose father was a minister. I've loved their music since 1999.

One of my favorite songs of all time - generally in my top 3... I love it obsessively. The song is grouped into three parts of the breastplate prayer it is trying to invoke (Lorica, Tara and Caim) - hence the lack of sitting still. Re: Fripp - he did appear on other tracks on the album, credited with 'Frippertronics'. Re: the guitar solo; it was meant to evoke a spiritual battle, and is uncharacteristic of Dave's playing - he played far more unhinged and aggressive than normal.

Iona is one of my ultimate favorite performers!! I've been listening to her music/band for many years; she has the voice of an angel, and the videos are superior. I am especially fond of, "Treasure; where your treasure is there lies your heart." The music is a combination of divine harmony and then some metal to give it an awesome balance. I love it, and I always will. I am glad you are featuring Iona. :)

Iona's music is delicate, beautiful and powerful. Dave Bainbridge is one of my favorite guitarists. He also plays the keyboard. He was Iona's main composer. He has been a member of Strawbs since 2015.

Well, Strawbs is still on an extended hiatus and pretty much not active but Bainbridge is very active as the guitar player / additional keyboard player with British progband Lifesigns. Do look them up, highly recommended. Very melodic.

Iona are one of my fave bands since the 80s when they started. Led by their Maestro, Dave Bainbridge, who has worked with The Strawbs, Lifesigns and Neal Morse, and is an all round good bloke. He has been appearing in the best prog musicians polls lately for both his dazzling guitar work and beautiful keyboard soundscapes. Iona are no more, but Dave has made possibly his best, most proggy album called "To The Far Away". He has also produced for others including Dave Brons who creates similar celtic-tinged folk-prog. Beautiful stuff.

Just looking at some of the album covers behind, it’s all the sort of stuff that I play on my Sunday evening radio show, but I’ve been an Iona fan for 28 years, and a radio presenter for only three years, and counting. I play music like this for those that appreciate it. It’s a genuine privilege!

Equally brilliant live. I saw them in a bar called the fleece and firkin in Bristol, UK. Back in 94, when the bass player was a guy called Nick beggs, I think. He was in an 80s group called kaja googoo.

This album was my introduction to Iona not long after it was first released. I always considered this song one of the best on the album - which was a tour-de-force of Celtic flavored Prog-rock! The guitarist/pianist/composer Dave Bainbridge is still active and teamed up of late with Sally Minnear whose father was a giant with Gentle Giant!

I can't say I ever expected to hear dulcimer in a prog track, but goddamn, it works! I really dig this. 100% agreed on the Loreena McKennitt vibes. (Fun personal fact: my favorite poem is one that Loreena McKennitt put to music, The Highwayman) Having grown up inundated with Celtic music, I just love this. Guess I gotta dive into their back catalog. Also, major Porcupine Tree vibes from the guitar solo around the halfway mark!

He was the best and last guitar teacher I ever had. I went thruogh 10 to find him, no exaggeration. I was almost heart broken.

I get some new age vibes from some of this, probably because celtic styles are fairly common in some new age music. With that said, I do have a wildcard wednesday suggestion to throw in, since it is a NEW AGE music suggestion for react (which would definitely be something different). Native American style New Age music. It's more enjoyable than it sounds really, from this particular husband/wife duo. Artist: AH*NEE*MAH Song: The Red Tower

Brilliant band but not as well known as they should have been. They are one of a group of progressive rock bands who sit on the boundaries of folk but with overtones of Pink Floyd which also includes the band Mostly Autumn . Troy Donockley the Pipe and whistles player played for both bands and was a key member of Iona up until the last album. He is now the multi instrumentalist and support singer for Nightwish the Finnish Symphonic Metal band and continues to add a Celtic dimension even in that heavier genre. Mostly Autumn are definitely worth listening to and are even more Pink Floyd like and Nightwish are also worth a listen as many of their songs have a progressive structure ( though they come with a vociferous and slightly zealot like fan base so be prepared for that if you react to them)
