First Ladies Who Were Actually Really Weird

Ойын-сауық

American presidents have a significant place in U.S. history books for their many accomplishments and follies. But behind these “great men in history” are also their wives who became American first ladies. The history of first ladies may not be talked about as much as American presidents but their lives are just as interesting and as complex as their husbands.
Some of them accomplished great things while in the White House white others were not as noteworthy, to be honest. And then there were first ladies who were eccentric and just plain quirky. Here are the first ladies who were actually really weird.

Sandi Angel Robert Lincoln didn't just 'dump' his mom Mary Todd in an asylum. He kept trying to get her to see straight, be logical and act sane. She wouldn't, because she couldn't. Then when you start walking around nude everywhere and adamantly refuse to knock it off, something has to be done. He left her there because after he put her away she disowned him forever. She got out of course, moved to Germany and was as just mentally ill there too. She came back to live with other family in America, stayed insane then died. Mary suffered a lot in life, including migraines all her life. I'd go insane too for all that.

Lady Bird Johnson was one of the kindest and most thoughtful ladies it has been my pleasure to meet. What do I mean by this? Well after LBJ died she was allocated (as an ex First Lady) two secret service guys, who followed and protected her all over the world. She stayed(with them) in The Dorchester (where I worked). They were supposed to sit outside her suite(on 12 hour shifts)but she didn't like the guys sitting on an uncomfortable chair in a corridor for that long. So she made them sit IN the suite, watch TV and have coffee and sandwiches. As she said to me ,it was also to her benefit,as being on her own in a suite was rather lonely, and it was nice to have someone to talk to.As you will gather, the Secret Service guys liked her immensely.

I was a page for her at a big function in Austin when I was quite young. My mother was on the organizing committee, it was some kind of fundraiser, and I was assigned her table. The table also seated Mrs. Ford. I was SO giddy with excitement, I nearly made her FALL into her chair as I pushed in it for her! More like .. shoved it under her, and knocked the back of her knees!! To this day, I cannot even remember WHERE that was! Our family lakehouse was across from the LBJ's lakehouse up on Lake LBJ in Kingsland, Texas. EVERY time they'd come up, you could hear the LOUDEST varrrroom varrrrooommm varrrooom going on, it literally echoed up and down the lake! It was the two Secret Service boats warming up, preparing to lead and follow the big boat out onto the lake. The big boat of their's (really, it was a seagoing yacht) would slowly back out of the completely enclosed boat house and set off towards the main part of the lake. We were more up the Llano River part. I was a teen then, and we'd all get in our ski boats, head out to the boat where LBJ would let us climb aboard and dive off the very top part of the boat, time after time! Totally different times back then! No one was SO security minded, even after what had happened to JFK! Lady Bird was the sweetest lady ever! That big function was years later in Austin, but she remembered me from that summer up at the lake! To this day, I plant her wildflowers wherever I go, and if bluebonnets will survive wherever it is ... I plant more of them than anything! She is why we have such gorgeous highways & byways in the USA! A fine lady, gentle, sweet, kind and with an eye to beauty in all things. HE was lucky to have her! We were lucky to have him as our president too!

First of all, to describe these former first ladies' as "weird" is not only disrespectful but it ignores the fact that women have had to fight and work incredibly hard in the time they lived in. Pat Nixon lived with that awful man for years and it has only recently come out that Mr. Nixon was physically and mentally abusive. Eleanor Roosevelt cared about worker's, war vets and women. She was a born First Lady who had an overwhelming sense of responsibility to her country. Melania could take a few notes from Eleanor. I would like to know why the writers and editors of this list find it 'weird' that women haven't always been treated equal(not that we are now)? Are you so clueless about history that you don't understand the plight of the woman? Are you so ignorant of the historical norms that you don't realize that Eleanor Roosevelt was the first spouse to speak on behalf of her husband at his first DNC convention? Seriously, this was a dumb list. I expected better than this clueless, child-like list that shows no understanding or value of American history.

+Penny Layne After I made my comment, I wanted to know more. I Googled 'Pat Nixon abused by Dick.' A few articles came up. The people who would talk about it seemed to be fairly reliable sources. Tricia Nixon Cox denies the abuse and there is no actual evidence to prove abuse. But you have to realize that this was during a time when being abused was shameful to women and something they didn't talk about to other people unless they could trust them to keep quiet about it. The same could be said for parental abuse of children. Outsiders often knew there was abuse going on but they rarely reported such things to law enforcement. Back then abuse was considered to be a family matter and people kept their mouths shut.

Grunge tries to redefine the definition of 'weird' with this silly and outta place video. If you pay attention to this 'slow Sunday at KZread' type of video, you can easily come to the conclusion the script was written by a guy(s) with little to none experience with women. Heck, in several cases, the husbands were the weird ones. According to Grunge it is weird to: appear in commercials, to win Mother of the Year, to try to keep your marriage together even your husband is a social butterfly, to wear jewelry, to have social media accounts, befriending the media or raising money for charity. Quality over quantity, Grunge, Remember that.

She took that thought and applied it to her beautification program for the United States to great sucess. She was the first First Lady to actually be politically involved in any issue before Congress. Lady Bird herself saw her conservation and beautification work as deeply interwoven with President Johnson's Great Society agenda. And it certainly was successful, it's still ongoing to this very day! She hasn't been treated the nicest by the public and she seems to be a very nice person herself, so that would be tough if you ask me. I personally think she is the best First Lady we have had since Jacqueline Kennedy. She is beautiful, a wonderful mother, seems to have a wonderful life of her own, and shows great restraint when faced with difficult situations, such as people leaving rude remarks about her past modeling career. In my opinion, they are just jealous that she is so beautiful.

I'm not seeing anything "weird" about Lady Bird or Pat. They married men who were difficult to deal with and they carried it off well. As for Lady Bird's super-short engagement, that was normal then. People were supposed to get married if they wanted to do the wild thing with each other, so they didn't wait around.

This shows why we have to take information from sources like this with a grain of salt. Lee Radziwill may have dated Onassis but she was not his girlfriend. I remember how crushed we all were for Maria Callas, the opera star, when the Jackie-Aristotle engagement was announced. Maria was his girlfriend and had been for 8 years. It is doubtful that Aristotle called Lee.

Mary Lincoln had a truly sad life. Her mother died when Mary was quite young and her father promptly remarried. Then, after she married Lincoln, they lost three of their four sons. Robert, the oldest child, was afraid his widowed mother would spend all her money, leaving none for him to inherit, so he had her declared insane by doctors who had never met or examined her. She was sent to a mental hospital but later gained her release and never forgave Robert. She spent the last years of her life traveling in Europe, lonely and physically ill. This lady should have spent that time with her grandchildren, but she only met one of them. Robert's wife threatened to leave him if he brought her to live in their home. If you've ever seen pictures or visited Hildene, the Robert Todd Lincoln home in Vermont, know that it was purchased with money his mother left him. He never earned the money to buy it.

To all of the rude dumb comments. Here's one President that most probably thought his wife was weird. Him most of all for not hiding her away. President McKinley wasn't ashamed of his wife having seizures. He wouldn't even hide her from people from other countries. While having them. Even staff members would be fired for talking bad about.

The reason why President McKinley did put the handkerchief on her face. Was so others wouldn't stare at her. She wouldn't come out and see all of them starring at her. Please consider this neurologists don't know what starts seizures. Especially for those who are born with them. The Partial Mall seizures there's up to 82 different kinds of those.

You are quite correct. Add on the fact that John had been courting her & had proposed several times. He was also 30 years her senior. Julia, her sister Margaret & her father David Gardiner a NY state senator were guests of President Tyler along with others when the explosion of a huge naval gun called the Peacemaker exploded killing her father among others. It was Tyler whose quiet strength helped her through her grief. She became the stepmother to his 7 children by his first wife Letitia the oldest of which Mary was 5 years older then her stepmother. She & John then had 7 children of their own & 2 of their grandsons are still alive today.

Lyon was 71 when his next to youngest son Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born in 1924. He then fathered Harrison Ruffian Tyler at the age of 75 in 1928. When you add in the fact that John Tyler was born in 1790 during George Washington's first term that means as unbelievable as it might seem that John Tyler, his son, & 2 of his grandsons have witnessed everyone of our presidents.
