First Inspection of a New Hive

We're opening up our new hive one week after installing package bees. We're going to check the bees' progress drawing out foundation, verify that the queen was accepted and replenish the sugar syrup if needed.

I love how gentle he is! Sometimes it seems like people are making a show of not fearing the bees, and they move quickly or roughly. I prefer this style so much, I hate to harm even a single bee

I agree with Brad let your bee's do their own thing. Only people gaining anything from pollen patties and dugar are the people selling it. I've watched a bee tree in my area for 30 plus years no human interference their still alive and well

I would like to encourage you, and I would for all beekeepers, to start watching natural beekeepers like Michael Bush and Dr. Leo Shiratskin--they are informing us of the damage we doing do the bees guts by feeding sugar, pollen patties, essentials oils and pesticides. Bees do far better on their own.

Have you considered a queen excluder between the brood box and the feeder box? That way you'd know there would be no eggs in that burr comb and there would be no way for her to get up in the feeder box and possibly drown.

We just started 3 new hives on our homestead, we have had bee's in the past but we have always had issues with wax moths. This is the first time we saw a pollen patti we might have to look into that. We are doing everything we can to make sure our hives are strong. Thanks for the video.

I would have put an empty frame off to the side to get the extra room and put that first frame you found with comb starting back in the box.

if it may help : give them less frames 6 dadant are many 5 best with warm partitions on the sides sirup in the evening and reduce the entry leave them alone check in a week time there should be eggs if not wait 5 more days if not find the queen kille it and add the bees to another hive unless you have a queen ---- it helps alot to have frames from other hives to start with !!! honey and pollen and ready empty ready frames -.- when they lay eggs give it time to operculate then wait 14 days minimum --- and add 1 frame extra on each side so 2 ;) and so on

Brand new to all of this.... just getting my bees about two weeks from now.. This video is VERY helpful. I've been reading everything I can (lots of beekeeping books) but sometimes a video can really clear things up - a picture being worth a thousand words. One thing I've never seen mentioned is how do you know (while inspecting a hive) when it is time to re-smoke the hive AND how much is just right and how much is TOO much?

How long have you been doing this and what do your neighbors think of the endeavor? I hear the traffic in the background and it sounds like you are in a heavily populated area.

Interesting feeder. I'm still green but wouldn't that encourage robbing. It has a huge surface area to evaporate, so it will get very humid in there. There is already mold growing in there.

Everyone in the comments is so critical... it's a beehive guys. Calm down. So what if you bump the hive. So what if a bee got smushed. It's not the end of the world, or the end of the hive.

  • @arkas6797

This bee has very little chance of survival. There is no built frame for the queen to begin her spawning. The population is too small to build even a framework. In the bee there is no food, no pollen. Tighten the hive in just 3 frames with vertical styrofoam, if you have installed a built frame and feed stimulants daily with 100-200g. sugar syrup for ten days. We hope that everything goes well and that the bee will be fourteen soon.

You are CARELESS when putting the hive back together. Numberous bee's were injured or killed. Same with the pollen patties..... You should have put to hive bodies and top on with a sliding motion to give the bee's a chance to move out of the way. With the patties, you didn't look under before laying them down.

At the 14:42 mark, you tap the bees out of the hive before closing it. If I were a beekeeper, I would never do it because I respect the bees' ability to sting people if you bother them. Tapping the bees out before closing the hive, in my opinion, would upset them and they will target your mesh covering in the face. I would just leave the bees in that opened hive to close them. Even if I have PPE and a smokepot, I would be a lot more careful than you do.

I hope that you are a little faster now...A little bit slower and we might have died of boredom...And about that smoke...There were 5 bees in there and you used too much smoke, most of it for no reason, just smoking the air...I use half of that smoke to inspect 2 or 3 hives, much stronger than this one...Anyway,it's been 2 years since you uploaded this,I hope everything is good right now!!
