@47:50 - such an astute observation given the little time you had spent there. I've said it multiple times in many videos about Ha Noi. It still retains a lot of unique cultural and historical aspects, be it Vietnamese, Chinese or French. From architecture, to social and cultural events. I like its lakes and tree lined streets and boulevards, its alleys, its unique food scene like lack of franchise restaurant chains. Too many Asian large cities are trying too hard to look and feel Western. If and when you go to the many cafes and small eateries in VN, from North to South, you'll appreciate they're all proudly owned by proprietors and not part of a soulless franchise. Their interior decor and exterior appearance are all unique, their cafe selections are delicious and fresh, and throw i the low cost and VN is definitely unique and Ha Noi is a good example of that. Safe travel guys and I look forward to seeing more of your videos about VN.

The comment you guys made at the end about Hanoi is why so many vloggers love it. Don't let the naysayers from Saigon tell you otherwise (oft times, they are overseas Viets whom are still bitter over losing the war so anything about the north, they will poo-poo). Many Viets try to point to Saigon and show off how modern it can be and whatnot, but they don't understand that Western vloggers go to see the culture, tradition, architecture, history, etc., that's different than their own. If they wanted to see a modern city, they can just walk around their own Western cities or go to Japan or Singapore, right? Hanoi has retained it's charm and that's what people like.

The best bung mi is bbq pork ( hot ), with fresh cut chilies ! Also luke, it good to see you enjoying food again, i can see your eyes rolling to the back of your head, keep a eye out for the small lake in the middle of the old quarter which has a b52 bomber in it.

If you don't like coffee that are too sweet but also want to try Vietnamese's famous coffee, order "bac xiu da". If you want something a bit stronger but sweet, ask for "cafe sua da". Coconut cafe and egg cafe are also very good cafes that are unique to Vietnam.

@@TwoMadExplorers Everyone loves the coconut coffee, for sure. Egg coffee is also a favorite, especially in Hanoi. If you get a chance, try the salted coffee (make sure to mix the cream as it's what is typically salted). Bac xiu as the OP mentioned is very popular as it's less sweet than ca phe sua da (the famous Vietnamese condensed coffee) and has more milk added to dilute the sweetness and strong coffee taste. Also look for peanut coffee, pandan coffee, yogurt coffee, etc. They have amazingly cute and unique cafes in Hanoi and all over the country.

Same. After 3 weeks in Vietnam I was walking around like not caring at all and only looked out for trucks. The best way IMO to describe the traffic is like you are a shark trying to get the fish... they just move away around you. :)

Ive. Been to that market at end of video,10 years ago .great memories .glad you enjoy hanoi..i loved it. For the last time( i will stop nagging lol) please go to Dalat . It really is you twos cup of tea. Very unique compared to rest of Vietnam Nature everywhere..lakes...markets..french influence on the buildings...temples everywhere that are beautiful..I found it very friendly...it's a city ..but has a lovely vibe to it. Food is great as well. Thats it won't mention it again lol . Thanks for the video.... superb...great job naomi and luke!......from Martin( Bristol)

You need to try cracking pork banh mi. It's much better than banh mi with cold cuts

You guys recalled some good memories! My wife and i traveled to Hanoi 5 years ago. What i remember the most was how good the food were. They have the best food scene in south east asia (at least for our taste)

The statues group is a symbol of very famous slogan in 1946 when the war for independent between Vietnam and French begans: "Fight until die for the motherland to live"!

I’m still travelling in India. I’m in Mussoorie and I’m going to chase the cooler weather northward into the mountains. I have Shimla and Kasol on my list. This will take me to the end of my visa in June. After that I’m off to Mauritius for one year on a DNV. I’m going to pick up a camera just to take photos really but who knows I could be your next vlog competition.

The island in in the middle of Hoàn Kiếm lake is Tháp rùa (The turtle tower). It was the place for some very old turtles (more than 100 years old) to rest. The old turtle died few years ago.

Hoan Kiem Lake, a place of great historical value. Legend records it as the place where the magic sword was returned after repelling the invaders.

Hanoi has a very long history. Back in early Christian era. It was for a while the capital of Jiaozhi prefecture of Han Dynasty, which covered most of North Vietnam, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan provinces (before that, modern Guangzhou was the capital of Nanyue kingdom which covered the same area). Even when Jiaozhi prefecture was divided into two new prefectures (Jiaozhou and Guangzhou), it was still the capital of new Jiaozhou, which covered most of North Vietnam, Guangxi province and small part of Guangdong) And in fact, it has more skyscrapers and high-rise buildings compared to Ho Chi Minh city (or Saigon) (for example: it has 432 buildings which are higher than 100 m compared to 243 in HCM city, 47 higher than 150 m compared to 35 in HCM city), according to WIkipedia. However, the touristic parts of Hanoi do not have high rise buildings.

I cannot believe you guys drank that black coffee without milk...yikes! Only old men in Vietnam drink that stuff straight. LOL! You should ask for bac xiu as it's a more diluted version of ca phe sua da (the famous Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk). Don't forget to try salted coffee, coconut coffee, peanut coffee, etc. As far as the banh mi, the ones with roasted pork belly are my favorites...or the roasted char sieu. But you really can't go wrong with any of the banh mi over there. Even the egg ones are delish. I've seen vloggers do the cyclo just for the experience and they seem to like it as they can sit and slowly watch what's going on around the streets of Hanoi go by. Just haggle with them on the amount and the time as some are hour long and maybe you just want to go for 15-30 minutes.

@@TwoMadExplorers A lot of Western people have difficulty pronouncing the ng sound in Vietnamese. It's a nasally sound not found in English. To practice, thing of the word "fillet mignon" the gn in mignon is similar to the ng sound in Vietnamese. Also thing of all the words that end in ing such as sing, king, ring, thing...concentrate on the ng sound and you'll eventually get it.

Nanning china is worse than that for it being busy on the roads. Nanning china is huge.. massive place . Everyone gets around on their E bikes. Lots of the roads all at one time. Nanning china is really lovely. The people there are lovely and very friendly. Even though they don't understand you they can still communicate as they have translator on their phones. Bless. They are good that way. Very forward in technology. Very very forward. We come back to England and we feel that we are very behind china in the technology. Thank goodness. China is great and cheap to eat out. Very good. We loved it there

@@TwoMadExplorers yes.. we went to the fourth highest waterfall whilst there. And over the other side was Vietnam. So close. But the waterfall on China's side is more beautiful. Someone else went to Vietnam to the same waterfall but they don't get the full effect of it as U do in china. In nanning the Chinese use the people's park it is called to do many activities on there . Like ballroom dancing.. samari sword practising ladies with their big fans who do a dance on the park there. Where ever we went the people were doing something. It was brilliant. There is a place in china though that U don't need a visa.. think it begins with H.. but nanning china u need a visa to get into the country . Our visa though gave us two years to be in the country. So that was good. I will let you know the place in china where U don't need a visa. But that place is completely different to Nanning though

@@TwoMadExplorers it is Macau in china you don't need a visa to get in there. Think they give you so many days and then you leave. If you check out jet lag warriors video of them being there in macao china . Then you will find out when they are talking about it. Their bodies are brilliant. They have been all over the world also.

@@lionofjudah4114 That waterfall between the border of Vietnam and China used to belong to Vietnam, but China took that whole area, which used to belong to Vietnam from what I understand. I believe the French drew a map of the borders when they were there.

@@TwoMadExplorers I went to Cambodia for 3 months and the temple in Siem Riep Anckerwat will blow your mind and also a province Battombong it has a cave and about 1 million bats come out every night well worth checking it out.

fun facts about Vietnam, the Chinese ruled them for 997 years, the French ruled them for 150 years, the yanks tried to rule them and we all know how that turned out, their food use to be ranked 3rd heathiest food in the world till the U.S trade embargo was lifted in the 80's then they put so much sugar and M.S.G in their food that it was ranked 97th, they are very superstitious and if you have a beer gut like me, they will rub it for good luck ( which i find very rude ), also if you have a goatee beard, they will pull it for good luck ( which i also find very rude ) i can also teach you to swear in Vietnamese if you like !!!

( in english ), some of the scams to look out for are, since their money have so many zeros behind it that they will try and short change you, also you see the people walking down the street carrying stuff with those hang down baskets on bamboo, they will offer it for you to carry it and they will place the traditional hat on you , then when you get your photo taken they want you to give them money, did you know that the return tourist rate to vietnam is less than 5%, it got up to 11% but then it dropped back down because of the fact that there is rubbish everywhere, even in ha long bay which is a heritage listed place, the soup is called pho, it has over 150 different herbs and spices, but its noting to write home about, be careful as they still eat dog in vietnam, you can tell because is real smells strong and has a bitter taste and looks very dark, the Vietnamese will only goto the beach when it is cloudy, as they dont want to get a suntan, but be careful and check the beach first before you go for a swim as most of them have raw sewage and turds washing up on shore, hue, hoi an and da nang, are nice as far as vietnam goes and are much quieter.
