First Impressions of Seoul Metropolitan Subway

It really feels like Seoul has the best subway system in the world.
There are 24 lines, (AND 728 STATIONS!)... all underground!
And it's easy to use...
Just get your t-money card at the airport or any subway station or any convenience store (7eleven, CU, G25...), and load your card with money.
It is cheaper to use t-money than buying single entrance tickets.
Check out our tips and what we think about the subway in Seoul!

I heard NYC renovated much of their subway system in the last few years, I imagine it's pretty good now. How is it now? I know way way back there were cat-sized rats called "Track Bunnies," people leaving paper cups with piss just waiting to be tipped over and flooding the floor, and even flashers or people jacking off to female passengers... (even in the 70s)

Honestly one of the best bits of it when I was there was how easy it is to find the right exit - and that's coming form a Train nerd! Naver maps makes it so much easier, it's something that in my city's underground system is somewhat lacking - if you zoom in to map on the city's app, it'll show you the walking route, but numbered exits make it so much easier to remember and follow, and you don't need to have local knowledge of what is where to find the right one quickly! If I remember correctly, it even shows you which carriage- and door-number to stand in/at, to be closest to the correct exit! Genius!

As a Korean and one of the people who are deeply interested in Japan's Subway and Train System, main difference between Tokyo and Seoul is that whether subway operating company is public or non-public. In Tokyo, there are 11 subway and train company(not public corporation)including JR, but they don't have non-charge transportation system each other. But in Seoul, 90% of subway line is operated by 2 public corporation(KORAIL and SeoulMetro, non-charge tranportation available) and the other lines also operated by medium-sized public company or low-charge transportation available. Other metropolitan, Busan is almost same. But I think Tokyo also have good point related to Seoul, like they have extreme well organized Time-Space Diagram, so that they can operate Express Train and Local train in one line, and they also connect different subway line each other, even between different companies' lines, so some subway train go through several lines,

And you guys would know that Japan was much better technologically advanced country between 1900's and 1990's so most of Tokyo's subway and train line have constructed from 1900's to 1970's. But unfortunately that made Tokyo's lines unable to be efficiently improved now on lol (Seoul's first subway line was constructed in 1974) And train's electrical standards are all different each other(from 600V to 1500V, from Third-Rail to Overhead Line)

Seouls metro doesn't hold a candle to Tokyo. Tokyos is much more extensive and many more people use it. It is part of the urban fabric and allows a nice walkable urban environment where owning a car is not necessary. Seoul is much more car orientation. That alone makes Seouls system worse.

I can't think of anywhere else in the world where you could step outside your home, get in a metro, get on a train, go to another city, get on that city's metro or bus, and essentially get dropped off right at your destination within a block or two.

The Netherlands has pretty dense coverage due to the country being small, by that I mean: most neighborhoods will have a bus stop every 200 meters and there'll be at least one train station in every city/town. However, only 4 cities here have a subway system, (probably because the other cities are too small to require one), but of course Holland probably nothing like South Korea. South Korea is definitely on top when it comes to this, I'm just trying to add some context!

The Seoul Metropolitan Subway System pretty much has over 98% of their platforms protected by what I call suicide prevention barriers. Unlike Japan’s platform barriers which are only average human chest-high, they are full-length which make it impossible to intentionally or accidentally fall onto the tracks. Only a few above ground stations do not have these barriers yet but soon every station will have them. Truly one of the safest and consequently most efficient subway systems in the world.

One of the reasons why the spaces in the subway stations such as the tunnels are so large and also so far underground is because they double as bomb shelters. Almost all station exits have a sign that says 대피소 posted on them, meaning “shelter”. The threat of invasion from the north is not something most of the younger generation ever thinks about but it is still a terrifying possibility. South Korean residents practiced monthly air raid drills at least well into the late 90s.

The biggest difference between Seoul and Toronto Metro systems (from the view of someone who lived in both for a long time). Seoul Metro checks and repairs its system while people are not using it (after official work hours). TTC checks and repairs its system when people need transportation the most (during the weekend etc). And more importantly, Seoul Metro 'prevents' system errors while TTC lets even raccoons impede its run.
