After being cooped up at FareDrop HQ for far too long, we were ready for a big day out in Hồ Chí Minh City (or Saigon), Vietnam! Highlights include: Vietnamese coconut coffee (an old fav), the Ben Thanh Market, noods, and most of all, “Dining in the Dark” for dinner. Have you heard of it? It was the most INCREDIBLE experience. Hope you enjoy :)

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this KZread channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Vietnam is such an interesting place. The people are incredibly friendly in a way that is also a bit sad, as it’s very easy to see these are people who have been surpressed for so many decades.
I went to Vietnam Thailand and Cambodia in December and this was like walking down memory lane! Vietnam is the most amazing place in the world!! xx

My oldest son has been all over the world. He has not been to as many countries as you guys but he is well traveled. Vietnam is one of his favorite places. "Follow a local across the street" was exactly the advice he got when he was there. He has great stories about Vietnam and India.
Ahh good video. I'm 33 years old. Growing up in USA, I felt extremely removed from what war really is and learning about different wars has been really transformative for how I relate to myself and others.

I’ve been to that museum before and it’s definitely depressing and deepens our perception of the harsh reality of war
Some trivia about the war: my Dad served twice over there and was treated alwful when he came back. My Dad loved the children there and we sent candy etc. For the kids. He fought for the Vietnamese who needed freedom. I have pics of the country and people there etc., very special. He said it was a beautiful country, glad ya'll enjoyed it there and the fact it's a free country. Blah blah blah, I'll stop now. Lol. Love to both of you!
So interesting to see war history from a different perspective right? My Vietnamese friends gave me an insight based on their perspective and honestly, this was the same way with the Filipino-American War because I learned Philippine history in the Philippines then moved to the U.S. at 12 years old and things were completely different when I learned it again. I'm glad you guys are open minded!

I also went to the War Remnants Museum, and while silently crying on my own, I watched the Americans on the same room with me, seeing the photos and reading those photos. I was curious what they were thinking. I guess you answered it. Thank you for your content. Love from the Philippines
As a blind person I think it’s so cool that you had that experience of dining with no vision. Glad you enjoyed a little taste of my blind world! I’ve been watching your videos for 2 years and adore everyone! Thanks guys, sending love x
I love Vietnam!!! I traveled there last year from Australia, for my first ever over seas trip. (Went after watching your video on the ha long bay I just had to go there!!) Stayed in to chi Minh city for a week and went to the war museum and OMG I know how you feel!! I had the same feeling it was such an interesting experience. It broke my heart to see all the photos.
Your dinner in the dark is GOLD. "my soup tastes brown" SO great hahah

Bahahah "my soup tastes brown" was definitely Kara's best one liner in this one! These two crack us up!
I binge-watched your 2016 Vietnam & Cambodia vlogs before my trip there last year and tried several of your recommendations. I also went to Ho Chi Minh City which you didn't then (and to Ben Thanh Market and the War Remnants Museum). So seeing this video now feels so nostalgic. Love it :)
I went to an event this year for prevention for blindness earlier this year. We ate dinner blindfolded and it was a pretty cool to have that experience. It made me have so much appreciation for the people that aren't able to remove the blindfold and be able to see what we see everyday.
Oh my! You two have broken through a new threshold of creativeness and honesty that is the benchmark of great storytelling with this episode! Brilliant! Love, love, love the originality of the blind dinner. Perfect editing Kara :) Best was the post review, brought tears to my eyes. You two epitomize a loving couple. I can see why so many people now want to see you have a child while traveling the entire world :) Thanks so much for this share. Blessings, James and Kim

Ho Chi Minh is such a cool city, the food is amazing! Glad you guys were able to check out the American war museum. It’s crazy (as an American) how little we learned about it in school, the museum is definitely eye opening. On a lighter note- the dining in the dark experience seems SO cool!!!
Oh my goodness! Kara and Nate, where do I start with this video! I love how you both capture the beauty and uniqueness of every place that you visit. Right from Nate’s coffee wake up call for Kara 💝 to Kara guiding Nate through the traffic as he filmed 🥰 to your different perspectives on the market 😅 down to date night in such a unique place ☺️ But you know what truly makes you guys so lovely, is that you both take time to really listen to people, even in the way you took in what you saw at the museum and the way you felt for the people, the way you felt for the tour guide, the way you felt what the owner or Noir was saying, the way you felt for the staff at Noir...you guys go above and beyond what they say...you actually listen to them above all the words in your conversation...I hope I’m making sense...and I think that’s what makes you one of my favourite couples on YT 🤗🤗 Love you both! lol! "my soup tastes brown" should totally be the title of this video!!
I can understand getting the perspective from the museum there. The best way to learn about it though is to talk to those who lived it. My other half is a Vietnam Vet. Unfortunately, he has to live with it and the aftermath for life. It was hard for them there and hard when they came home. What was done to both sides, both by the other and their own, was criminal. It is part of history that should never be forgotten. And to this day, it is still labeled a "Police Action" instead of the war that it was.
Oh my gosh, I've heard of those in the dark restaurants! Your conversation during dinner was HILARIOUS! Thank you for keeping this in the video! 😂

Kara is always beautiful, but I must say 14:14 her skin was glowing in that light and her eyes looked so beautiful. Also the eating in the dark restaurant looked and sounded amazing. When I was in Ho Chi Min City we went to a cafe that employs only staff with Down syndrome and it also was amazing. I’ve forgotten the name but it was a big green cafe near a garden temple.

Love your videos. I'm Vietnamese and would not go to any war museum in Vietnam. Many are propaganda to make you feel like you've felt. Also, Kara did a good job with pronouncing the dish bún bò nam bộ. Say it like this (b-oon b-aww nam b-ohhh). Have fun travelling and be safe...

I was upset by the "guilt" remark. I remember watching the news during the war. Initially we were there to help the Vietnamese people but then it became a political war under Kennedy and Johnson. Washington ran that war instead of the military. My cousin's life was basically ruined by the Agent Orange. But I don't felt guilt. Check out what the Viet Cong did to the common Vietnamese.

We have a restaurant similar to that in Calgary, called Dark Table. The only difference is you could order what you liked off a menu that you viewed before you went into the completely darkened restaurant. I remember feeling quite nervous and out of sorts for the first several minutes without the use of my sight. I also realized how much of my communication with others is based on visual cues that I no longer had available to me. The employees were all visually impaired and were obviously very comfortable navigating the room without the use of sight - a very interesting turning of the tables and opportunity to appreciate how the world feels from a different perspective. Love that this is a concept available to people around the world!

Kara and Nate please take a history class on Vietnam, especially after you have been there. It will change your mind even more from what they people suffered way before the US went to war. And you should have seen a ton of French influence when you were there. Good video
I love the bowl of noodles and stuff....we eat this at a restaurant here in Texas called Saigon Pho! It's awesome!
Definitely a history lesson is needed. It's sad that Nate felt "shame". Nate should take what he saw at that museum with some skepticism and realize that much of it will be anti-American propaganda. It worked. Nate felt shame of being an American while visiting the museum. There is much more to learn about the Viet Nam conflict. War is horrible for all sides involved. The South Vietnamese people suffered horrific atrocities by the North Vietnamese. Americans helped many of them escape the horror of war. Before being ashamed Nate, find out what brought the war on. Vietnam veterans have been vilified and many of them never came back to their families. That is the real shame for an American to feel.
Did you mean Saigon. I was there in 1968.
