My journey started at Berkelee School of Music in the early 70s. My childhood friend was a musician and a student at Berklee. We visited the apartment of his friend, musician and fellow student who had a system comprised of a Marantz receiver, JBL speakers and a Garrard turntable. I was blown away and from that moment on, HiFi has been a big part of my life.

Many have decided to take the plunge into audio after the experience, especially when I remind them that year after year the rig will continue to give them pleasure long after they remember how much they paid for admission.

Mikey - you should do an A/B test between the F&F Bookshelf speaker for $4,500 (?) and the Alto Audio Alyssa Speaker for $5,000. I would have to think that one of those two is absolute state of the art for bookshelf speakers. Maybe also Joseph Audio which is more $$. I would value your opinion on this for smaller room systems like my office.

Speaker choice is very subjective. My brother and his friend visited an audio show in NorthWest England last weekend. They listened to all sorts of speakers. He has a pair of $200 Edifier active speakers (which he uses for near field listening, along with mixing, etc). He was only impressed with 2 speakers out of the lot. These were the $1,900 GoldenEar BRX and $65,000 TAD GE1 speakers. He was not impressed with any of the others. Both he and his friend had the same opinion. They are both musicians and are used to the live sound. I am in agreement when it comes to bass drivers needing large surface area. I have a pair of Legacy Audio Valors, which have a 14 inch lower midrange, two 14 inch bass drivers, and two 12 inch subwoofers. The bass can be very interesting with these. I recently heard a modern electronic track which goes very low in frequency. The bass was such that I was surrounding by it where the sound felt very thick against my ears and I could not tell where it was coming from as it seemed to be coming from everywhere. This is not surprising as the wavelength of bass can be longer than a room.

@@scottyo64 Yes. It depends on the type of musician. If the musician is the type who plays at concerts in front of 110dB walls of speakers, then I would question their hearing too. In this case, these two are jazz musicians who play the piano, guitar, and sing. It tends to be at small venues and pretty much acoustic. As such, they are not exposed to such high dB levels. They like jazz music. As such, there is a sense of liveness that they want. However, even in this case, they are not audiophiles and use cheap monitors (as they aren't rich). I had recommended that my brother visit the audio show to see what type of speakers he would like, as this is a very subjective choice. I have had audiophile equipment for 40 years, upgrading over the years. My system costs about $150,000, so we are talking about a very different level here. To me, one has to listen for oneself. Just because someone else likes something doesn't mean that you do. Back in 1986, I visited an audio show in London, England. I happened to listen to a pair of Magnepans and thought that they were too delicate, and was totally put off by them. A lot of people really like Magnepans. However, it might have just been the music they were playing. I really liked the Apogee ribbon speakers. The ribbons bouncing to the sound was quite mesmerizing. I also liked Meridian active speakers. Now, I am into the immersive aspects with very large sound stages. I do have a music (synthesizer) workstation with Rockit speakers and like the sound these give. My speakers can replicate the punch of these from 11 feet that listening to Rockits provide at 3 feet. The immersion caused by the large drivers allows me to listen at 75dB (so preserves my hearing) and still been surrounded by music. I also like the sense of rhythm my turnable provides, which I just cannot get from my streamer, even though I use a digital preamp (with room correction).

Let me start by saying that I have never heard a Legacy Audio speaker that blew me away at an Audio show. Most of the KZread channels say the same thing, as they are very unimpressed, including Mikey. The best you would have gotten from me is they are ok but really expensive for what you get. that being said....... I did hear a set of focus SE put through some pretty hard paces in a home set up run with some good electronics. I was sold. When you discuss in your other comment the "immersion" into the sound, that is exactly what Legacy Audio did for me. Subjective all day long, but I now have a set of focus SE's in my home and no one can talk me out of liking them. From 12 ft away they throw the music at you in such a way that about 75db you feel like you are in the room where it was played live. and with zero ear fatigue. In a good recording the bass definition is stunning. I have said before and will say again. If I was a classical music fan Magnapan and Martin logan would be a go to. I am not a fan of Focal or B&W but if I was a jazz fan I would consider their brightness. Legacy however, in my mind with its clearly defined bass, gives you a precise duplicate sound of the mallet hitting a kick drum while simultaneously giving you the resonance of a piano string filling a room. To the nay sayers, I say, until you've spent the proper time listening to legacy don't poo poo the idea. It may still very well not be your cup of tea but a show is no place to judge them. Distribution channels and dealer pricing may contribute to the low support and that's understandable, but as for tonality I am an unpaid shill and fan. The Valor is beyond my grasp but I would like to be your friend.

@@bobr9605 I haven't been to audio shows in 40 years. However, for the Aeris and Valors, I did visit the factory to listen to the demos before I bought them. I have also heard $300,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000 systems at dealers and find that I prefer my Valors. However, for the Valors, the treble amplification is very important. I had my Valors set up so I could use an internal class-D module for the upper frequencies above 800Hz (AMT tweeters and waveguide / compression driver upper midrange) or switch to external amplification. I will say that I was unsatisfied with the internal class-D module for the treble. I found class-D to be just fine in a 3 channel active system setup for the Aeris. I think the issue is that the class-D amp module didn't work well with the compression driver. I ended up getting a 20 watt Raven Audio Blackhawk tube integrated amp with NOS tubes along with a Silversmith Audio Fidelium cables. The change was dramatic and I was very satisfied. I am not a fan of classical music. I find that in most systems, the instruments seem to mash together. The Valors were the first time I could hear a group of instruments (e.g. violin section) sound as a group rather than as a mashup. I used to have the Martin Logan SL3's before I got my Aeris speakers. I originally thought about keeping both systems, but found that the Aeris totally outclassed the SL3's in every way (even where electrostats are strong). My brother enjoys Jazz but does not like Klipsch speakers as he finds them to be too bright. I am therefore not sure about people who like Jazz specifically liking brightness. With my turntable setup, I got is so that the cymbal work was very clear. This requires very good treble (Linn Sondek LP12 with Lyra Atlas Lambda SL cartridge with the Zesto Andros Deluxe 2 phonostage and Cardas Clear cables). The treble may be strong and detailed but not fatiguing. A very odd but pleasant combination.
