First Graders Rush To Defend Mom’s Trans Daughter: “These Kids Are Incredible. We’re Gonna Be Okay."

Despite experiencing homophobic bullying in high school, Marcella Andrews grew into a happy adult, marrying a woman and raising two young children. When her youngest child experienced transphobic bullying, however, she was transported back to those troubling high school days. Fortunately, her child's peers came to her defense.

@Some Girl True some kids are taught about the lgbtqiia by their parents and some are taught by the internet, my brother was educated by looking it up himself after i told him i was transgender. He asked me a few questions and then asked if i was his brother now, i said yes and he said ok and went back to playing fortenite while my mom literally woke up the neighborhood when i told her. Her only arguement was people are going to harm me and she fears i will be killed by a transphobic person, which happens alot.

my best friends son was three when he started showing signs of being a girl. My friend thought it was bad and she thought I was the one that in her words "provoked" him in to this so she took him away and I didn't see him till he was ten. He and I were in the kitchen making cake for a party I was having, and he just looked at me and said "i wish I could live with you"i ask him why and he said "because I feel free". He told me that he wanted to wear a dress and makeup like my spouse, he said that he wished he was a she. After that I said that I was going to talk to his parents, I did and they said that they would rather give their son away than be who he is. so three months later I was signing the causticity papers. Not always, I hate to say. A lot of kids have wonderful parents but bully other kids behind their parents backs because they see other kids do it. Kids laughed at and made fun of me and another girl in school because we have autism, we were awkward, and didn't really act like all the other kids did. But their parents didn't go and tell them, "yeah, laugh at people who are different because it's funny!" They did it because they thought it was funny. They can pick it up from other kids, TV shows and movies, and even just because humor involves pain in some way, shape, or form.

Back in the 90’s I worked with a transgender woman. We became work friends, I thought she was hysterical, and we had great chemistry. At the time, I had heard of transgender people, but I never gave it much thought. Over the years I’ve read and seen such viciousness aimed at these people, and I wonder, “was I supposed to be bothered by the fact that she is a transgender?” People need to grow up. I met her, befriended her - we have long parted ways due to that’s how life goes -- and what I got out of the friendship are really cool memories. Why should that ever bother me?

This is the way kids should be raised. She’s not enforcing that her child is trans she’s not making her daughter go buy only pink frilly dresses and only play with dolls. She’s letting her kid express herself. One day if she decides that she’s not a girl that she just had a phase of liking girly things I’m sure the family will be just as expecting. Kids should be raised without the boundaries of who they are told to be. They should be able to express themself how they want.

im a FTM transgender, still going through my transition. well one day, my mom took me shopping, and i saw a boy shirt that i really liked, so i asked my mom: me: can i try on this shirt, i think it would look good. mom: thats a boy shirt though. me: i know, but- mom: girls shouldnt wear boys clothing me: but i really like it- mom: put it back were not getting it. well anyways, i put it back and she would just continually pick out dresses, skirts, girly shirts and stuff and i didnt really like it. she ended up making me try on those dresses and skirts and whatever. but i didnt feel like myself. so i told my mom that i didnt like them. but she just got them anyways. i mean, yeah they were cute, but they werent for me. i wore them maybe a few times, but not a lot. my mom got pissed at me but hey, thats fine. when i turn 18 im going to live with my grandmother, because she actually accepts me for who i am and lets me wear guys clothes. thank you for taking the time out of your day to read what i had to write. it means a lot to me. I’m trans. It feels so good to say it... since I was 10 I begged my mom to let me cut my hair, until I did it myself when I was 15, and I was grounded for months. When I was 11 I asked my Dad what “transgender” meant, and he slammed my head into the coffee table and said “Never bring up that disgusting word in my house ever again” and I remember running to my room holding my nose and trying to keep the blood from getting on the carpet. Since I was 12 every birthday, 11:11, fallen eyelash or dandelions, every time I wish I could just start testosterone, so that at least something would feel right. I don’t live with my dad anymore (thankfully) but I want to come out to my mom so that I can start testosterone, but my cousin recently came out and he was kicked out and disowned by my aunt. Disowned! I’m not even allowed to say his name. My mom wouldn’t stop saying that SHE was too young to know what SHE was, and HE was 19 almost 20 at the time. I’m four years younger than him, so what would my mom say if I came out? If I did get kicked out, I have no where to go... so I don’t know what to do anymore (Uh update I guess) uh I came out and I didn’t get kicked out so yay. My dad died before I had to come out to him so that’s fun. Hope y’all are doing well in quarantine.

Perhaps not ... Children and teens are extremely malleable. Children and teens are being encouraged to freeze their sense of self in a moment in time, during the period of life when everything is in flux. And even though key researchers have said over and over again that most gender dysphoric kids “desist” and grow up to be gay or lesbian and most grow to accept their biology; even though the latest research denies any such thing as a “male” or “female” brain, parents are encouraged to socially transition their kids, put them on “puberty blockers,” and refer to them by “preferred pronouns and eventually guide them to mutilate their genitals.

Jeremy Lee oh the fallacies here. i would love to see your research, because there are plenty things wrong with what you have said. while trans studies arent huge, there are confirmed studies of a male and female brain that when cross referenced with a trans woman and trans mans brain, trans men have a similar brain to that of the cisgender male and trans women have a similar brain to that of a cisgender female. you may not have known this, its relatively new information, but dont post an ignorant comment; do some research first. thanks for your concern.

Bonidee Lee I get what youre saying, truly. But its not just a wish to be another gender, its the need. While you say there may not be no true or false trans, at the end of the day the way trans people will know if they are trans or not (for now as getting a brain scan isnt always an option, or a dangerous one) is if they experience dysphoria. That doesnt mean "oh i hate my stomach it isnt flat or i wish my chest was smaller", it means "The way my body is doesnt line up with the gender i am, and due to this i need procedures such as therapy, hormones, and surgery done in order to be that true version of myself" (speaking of which, if you want to start hormones you NEED a letter from a therapist or psychologist and have a continuous history of dysphoria but otherwise steady mental health. most surgeons also require a letter from a therapist and continuous history of dysphoria but otherwise steady mental health, some even requiring the subject be on hormones for a certain amount of time and over the age of 18. some other surgeons dont require the letter, just for you to be a certain age and with an informed consent form signed by parents and yourself). Its not exactly a quick process (waiting lists are becoming longer and longer), some people waiting years to get those things (kind of a good and not so good thing). No one is jumping straight into transition after feeling good in a dress or a tux, theres plenty of procedures to make sure that transition is for that individual.

If you want someone dead rather than openly transgender, you can talk to the police about why people are dying because of you.

Providing unconditional care, love, understanding and support are the furthest actions from abuse. Abuse is forcing a child to conform to societal moulds and norms while ignoring the child's needs, causing the child to feel distressed, traumatised, and potentially scarred for life. This approach applies to all parenting practices, regardless if the parents are same-sex or not.

I really like how she used gender exploration for her kid! Gender is definitely something complicated that takes years for some people to figure out, and she's acknowledging that while still respecting her kid's identity. It's normalizing that questioning is okay. I started questioning my gender around 6th grade, went through so many labels and names, even now as a sophomore I'm not even really sure what I am. But it's comforting to know that it's okay not to know.

and Kohlberg's phycological theory of gender states that kids know what their gender is between the ages 5-7. Kinda stupid, you could feel dysphoria for years and not even know that you are trans or that your birth gender does not match how you feel. There was one trans dude who did not know or identify that his birth gender did not match his current identity until he was 66! So, what I am trying to say is that you do not have to know what gender you identify as. You can take as long or as little to figure it out, just do what feels right by you and express yourself how you want. Stay safe ad much love

They were kinda making a big deal about it, and everyone who heard them started defending me. They weren’t being mean, they just thought I was joking the whole time and when I told them I was serious, they just got a little too excited. I swear if I hadn’t told him to shut up, one of my friends would’ve thrown a coming out party right then and there. Anyway, the point is I can really relate to this, and I think it’s awesome how the world has really changed.

I think the reason why they don't believe me is because I wasn't around about seven when I found out (but I was different), I was eleven when I found the term. At home they got to play how they wanted because to me it didn't matter, a toy was a toy. --All kids go through phases where they want to dress in whatever clothes, my son had a dress phase my daughter had a "boy clothes" phase and when they hit their mid-teens they settled on who they were and how they felt about relationships with others, no pressure, not shaming or guilt tripping for their choices, whatever they decided we went along with. --I think it is very sad that kids are not allowed to just be kids and that parents are forcing information on them that hey have not explained or the kids have no ability to understand.

Among many other things, it’s why we have ratings on films. A young child can’t understand that the monster onscreen is not real. Teens often pick up on cues and assimilate ideas presented in movies/films viewed in the movie theater and other sources, (online sources for watching movies now eclipse movie theater viewings or film DVD rentals for teens), and while teens already understand the difference between fantasy and reality, they may still absorb or become attached to ideas that are powerfully presented in films but that have no basis in reality, the teen not having enough experience or knowledge to sort propaganda from fact, fiction from reality. Films, television programs, music and statements from celebrities can [and do] become a part of the thinking and emotional/psychological makeup of teens and children.

This is so inspiring! I started having gender dysphoria around the age of six, and I remember my joy when I went shopping with a police officer my junior year of high school for Christmas, and I warily told him "I'd rather get clothes from the men's section rather than women's", and the police officer just smiled at me and said "Yeah, your dad told me you'd say that. Go where you want, and I'll be right behind you." My dad was super supportive, and it was nice, especially considering he's a baby boomer lol. While I don't believe in children being on hormones, I do believe in letting children choose what they want to wear, and what pronouns they want. So what if it doesn't stick? It makes the child happy and comfortable. And some transgender and/or gender-spectrum individuals even choose not to use hormones OR surgery. I know I possibly might get hormones, but right now I'm comfortable just identifying as a male. Many people will explore different things over their life, and sometimes it just doesn't work for them. But exploration is the only way you'll know. You might not support the LGBT+ or anything, but there's a thing called respect. There are so many things that people do that I don't like, but I have the courtesy to respect them and their decisions as long as it doesn't affect me personally. If your child says that they're gay or trans, you might not like it, but your responsibility as a parent and role model is to be mature about it and respect their decision. Children are their own people, they're not extensions of you. If your son likes to wear girl clothing, or your daughter likes to kiss other girls, leave them be. They could be doing MUCH, MUCH worse things than being LGBT+. Just because they're LGBT+ doesn't mean they don't love you anymore, or that they want to "disappoint" you; obviously if they sit down with you and talk to you about it, they TRUST you and hope that you'll continue to love and respect them. Anyways great video. I love how open this mother was to her child, and I'm so happy her child is more comfortable now. May she have so much success in her life as she grows up!

Everything happened so fast. In senior year, I found out I 💕 the same sex; a week later, I realize I'm a girl. Gender dysphoria continues to bother me, and I out myself to my family in December (but I thought I could stand it for a long while). Soon enough, I'm in counseling. A couple girls start talking to me because they assume I'm gay, and quickly become friends. The principal is overbearing (maybe a feminist too), and makes me more uncomfortable with myself, and it was just embarrassing. Our school didn't really have a problem with LGBT people before, so why must she be "the voice of the oppressed" every time she opens her mouth? The school might have a problem with us now. 😥 I finally began 👩 hormones in May, a couple months after my 18th. Fast forward to now and I'm in college, out in the city, away from all I know, but I'm happy. Many of my classmates see me as Lena, and it's all casual.

More and more clinicians have identified severe problems within gender medicine which coalesce around the clinical and cultural invention of ‘the transgender child’. These problems are: an excessively affirmative attitude to the self-identifying transgender child; an inability to stand up to external trans lobby groups; the undermining of a coherent clinical model of child and adolescent development; and serious ethical and safeguarding issues. Clinicians recognise they need to resist the dominant narrative and seemingly intractable ‘truth’ of ‘the transgender child’. People are waking up to the harms of trans for children and young people, but transgender ideology is still marching into schools disguised as LGBT acceptance. Kids with perfectly normal unease or confusion about bodies and gender are getting dragged onto the transgender conveyer belt of affirmation, blockers, cross hormones, and surgery. LGB kids are passé. Transactivism is a form of bullying: if you’re not porn-culture straight, a proper ‘boy’s boy’ or ‘girly girl’, you must be defective, in need of fixing, by reclassification, drugs or a scalpel. My head is full of questions about why we are allowing this to happen. Is the explosion in the number of transgender-identifying young people a symptom of a society leaving little room for kids to be themselves outside of increasingly restrictive gender roles? How can we keep the conversation going to keep kids safe? The goal of the transgender activists is to try and get their numbers up in order to normalize their agenda. They care nothing about seeing people reach a healthy view of their biology and not needing to take drugs and have their genitals and breasts mutilated. Impressionable teens make easy targets. They are even unethically influencing autistic children to change genders. Activists would have the public believe that anyone who expresses a wish to be the other gender should be allowed and encouraged to do so. Credulous politicians have translated their demands into law. To date, however, there is no evidence that there is such a thing as a “true” trans, just as there is no marker that would identify a “false” trans. To accept the thinking and wishes of those with ASD at face value, without understanding why they feel the way they do, is not a kindness, and may in fact be extremely damaging. A high proportion of people who suffer from gender identity disorder also suffer from other mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, personality disorders and autism (see also here and here). In many of them these problems do not resolve with gender reassignment. In fact hormones and surgery deal only very superficially with what is often a very deep psychosocial problem that doesn’t lend itself to quick technological fixes. The journal Psychoneuroendocrinology reported brain abnormalities in the area of memory and executive functioning among adult women who received blockers for gynecologic reasons. Similarly, many studies of men treated for prostate cancer with blockers also suggest the possibility of significant cognitive decline. Also evidence for decreased bone mineralization, meaning an increased risk of bone fractures as young adults, potential increased risk of obesity and testicular cancer in boys, and an unknown impact upon psychological and cognitive development. From studies of adults we know that the risks of cross-sex hormones include, but are not limited to, cardiac disease, high blood pressure, blood clots, strokes, diabetes, and cancers.

this honestly warmed my heart a lot with my being a lesbian non-binary. I think I'm going to put my little coming out story here. so for the longest time I didn't know what LGTBQ was but I knew that my nephew, let's call him Braxton, was gay. Somehow, even though I didn't know what LGBTQ was I knew I was different, that's all I knew. In about 5th grade I'd say I moved schools and there was this one girl that made me all flustered and shy. Of course at that time I kind of knew what LGBTQ was but I didn't think I was a part of it. This girl continued to make me feel these things and I didn't know what they were. Fast forward to 7th grade year, my closest female friend at the time came up to me and said, "Hey Ky, you know how I'm bisexual right?" I nodded and said yeah. she continued to say that she had a crush on me. Now I didn't think but I knew I'd never dated a girl before but for some reason I said "yeah, I'm bisexual too and I like you as well." she seemed shocked because I didn't really know at the time I was a part of the LGBTQ community. This girl and I dated for a week or two and one night at a school dance we kissed. It was at the moment our lips touched that I knew I liked girls. Fast forward through out 8th grade I went from being bisexual, to being lesbian, to being bi, to being pan, to being "straight", to being bi. I know I know "How can your sexuality change that much?" I still didn't completely know my sexuality. skip to the summer before my 9th grade year (current), I meet these girls on Instagram. They were so sweet and I thought they were really nice. We continued to talk and become friends and one day my best friend Autumn asked me, "Hey who do you have a crush on?" It was so out of the blue but I immediately responded "Grace!" They said, "OK. Be right back." and she went offline I continued to ignore what had just happened and read my book. About 5 minutes or so later Autumn sends me a screenshot. it read the following: Autumn: *sends a screenshot of there convo with me* Grace: >///// Autumn: wait you like them too!? Grace: yeah I do. *blushing emoji* Autumn: well they wanna know if you want to be there girlfriend! Grace: YES!!!!!! Autumn: cool. cool. Autumn then sends me a screenshot of there convo with Grace. I was totally shocked. I said "I didn't say that-" and Autumn replies with "yeah but your glad I did" I said I was. It's been about 3 months of mine and Grace's relationship and I know that Grace is the girl that I want to marry. I never want to lose her. Seeing her adorable face when she sends a picture. hearing her voice when she sends a video. ah. I just love her so muchhhhhh.

Kohlberg's phycological theory of gender states that kids know what their gender is between the ages of 5-7. Stay safe and much love to all my fellow trans/gender non-conforming humans

LOL ... Seems you are desperate to be PC as are many in the medical profession. Even the American Psychological Association’s Handbook of Sexuality and Psychology admits that prior to the widespread promotion of transition affirmation, 98 percent of pre-pubertal children and teens (99% by later adulthood) who were distressed by their biological sex eventually outgrew that distress. The vast majority came to accept their biological sex by late adolescence after passing naturally through puberty.

@@jeremylee5990 majority, not all. Us trans people are not the majority and we know it. Most feel comfortable in their bodies they were born in, making them a majority. And of course, cisgender people are going to feel grossed out by their bodies during puberty, you are going through strange hormonal imbalances, growing reproductive organs, and new tissue is formed. Trans people don't just feel uncomfortable in their own bodies, we feel uncomfortable because we psychologically are in the wrong body(not the best way to explain it, but it'll do). And it is not a phase. As you said, MOST kids by the end of puberty are semi comfy in their bodies. 98% feel fine in their bodies, while the other 2% is the trans population. So, thank you for validating our existence, goodnight!

@@rocketcoulson460 No one is born in the wrong body. The idea that people have either a “female” or “male” brain is an old one. The theory goes that once a fetus develops testicles, they secrete testosterone which masculinises the brain. If that were true, there would be two types of brains. However, there are NOT two types of brains. Multiple studies of the scans taken from 1400 people aged between 13 and 85 concluded in examining the 29 brain regions concludes there are not two types of brains. These regions included the hippocampus, which is involved in memory, and the inferior frontal gyrus, which is thought to play a role in risk aversion. Trans people live synthetic lives based on drugs and body mutilations. They cannot sustain their impersonations naturally. The idea that children are born with an innate ‘gender identity’ which develops pre-natally and is impervious to environmental influence is not supported by any credible science. We are our bodies. If transgenderism requires medical treatment, how can it form the basis of anyone’s identity? Trans people and their allies have, of course, insisted with great indignation that their condition is not a mental illness, but it is hard to see how this conclusion is to be avoided, if it’s insisted that it must be treated or else will be fatal. It seems far more reasonable - and medically ethical and sound - to achieve this homeostasis by changing gender to match to the already established sex. A woman taking testosterone must continue taking testosterone, or else her desired masculine secondary sex characteristics will fade away (though if she has removed her ovaries, her body will not be able to produce estrogen and bring her female sex characteristics back). As many trans men prefer to keep their reproductive organs and become pregnant, this risk is even higher. The body’s aggressive and persistent attempt to return to a state, despite medical interventions to override that state, indicates that the state is “natural.” The body is being medically forced to adapt to conditions it is unsuited to experience. If the ideal state is one of homeostasis, in which gender and sex are the same, then why would trans people dedicate their entire lives to forcing their bodies to adapt to conditions they cannot maintain on their own? It seems far more reasonable to recognize that the physical sex at birth is the standard by which internal perception should be aligned. Logically, wouldn’t a transgender person who suffers due to misalignment of gender and sex be equally as happy aligning his gender to his sex if the end result is that gender and sex are the same? Why is the only acceptable option to force, through dramatic physical deformity, the body to adapt to the mind instead?

Jeremy Lee Mate I think you missed the whole fucking point. Gender and sex are not the same thing. Sex is what we all come out as, male or female. It comes down to what chromosomes you have or what reproductive shit you have between your legs. Gender on the other hand is how you identify on the gender spectrum, which could be male or female but it can also be a combination of both or completely off the gender binary spectrum. Us trans people know we can’t change our sex. We can’t, it’s as simple as that. You come out as you are born. Gender, however can change. It is flexible and a spectrum based on how you feel about your body. If you like it; great, your gender aligns with your sex. If you don’t, your sex does not align with your gender. Also what people do with their bodies in none of your fucking business. As long as it is conducted under safe conditions, it is fine. They can take testosterone or estrogen or get top surgery. They can fix their body parts to match their gender and feel so much more comfortable in your body. Do you know that half of the out trans people in the world, about half have tried to commit suicide or had intrusive suicidal thoughts based on the fact their sex does not align with their gender? Maybe you should stop caring about what others do with their body and why they are trans and maybe start being a supportive friend and ally. It does not take much, mainly just educating yourself on trans issues and listening to trans voices, using the right pronouns/name for someone who is trans, supporting them as they will always be feeling gender dysphoria until they feel more comfortable in their body (ie. getting surgery, a binder/stuffed bra ect.) to some extent.

"I feel like me" is such a powerful and relatable statement for trans people. When you do stuff that affirms your gender identity, it's super euphoric. You feel authentic. Whenever I looked myself in the mirror when I was living pre-transition, it didn't really feel like I was looking back at myself. It's so refreshing for people to defend you being yourself instead of trying to force you or box you into a mismatched gender.

Some kids were a bit "shocked" when they found out I was a girl, but never in a mean way. It wasn’t until middle school that kids started making less than accepting comments about the way I dressed and behaved...

BEAUTIFUL STORY. THANK YOU. I KNOW IT'S NOT THE SAME, BUT I HAD BAD EXPERIENCES BEING MIXED RACE REJECTED BY BOTH SIDES. AT MY CATHOLIC SCHOOL THE WHITE KIDS WOULDN'T PLAY WITH ME. ONE GIRL TOLD ME THAT HER MOM DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO PLAY WITH ME. ON THE WAY HOME BLACK KIDS TRIED TO BULLY ME BECAUSE I HAD ON A SCHOOL UNIFORM AND THEY SAID THAT I THOUGHT THAT I WAS BETTER THAN THEM. I'M PROUD THAT I LOVED TO READ AND SPENT RECESS AND LUNCH READING. ON THE WAY HOME I STOOD MY GROUND AND WAS ANGRY ENOUGH TO THINK I'D WHOOP SO ASS IF ANYONE DARED TO TOUCH ME. IN RETROSPECT I'M GLAD THAT I DIDN'T HAVE TO PROVE IT. I HAVE ALOT OF SELF CONFIDENCE NOW AND MAYBE THESE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES MADE ME INTOLERANT OF ANY FORM OF PREJUDICE AND MORE LOVING TO THOSE WHO ARE IN ANY WAY LIKE ME.

My best friend in transgender(FTM), and I knew him before his transition. So when he came out to me and told me about his new name, the pronouns he would like to be called by. I was over the moon for him. Because I knew that he was trapped by something( I didn't know what it was at the time). But after he told me that this is what he wanted. I saw and felt from him that he was free. And I was so proud of him. Love is love, people are people. Don't judge people because they are "different", even so there is nothing wrong with being different. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. And never judge a book by it's cover. Because you never know what amazing story they have.

@@Nonexistent_creature Truth is not hate. You just hate truth. Sex “reassignment” doesn’t work. It’s impossible to “reassign” someone’s sex physically, and attempting to do so doesn’t produce good outcomes psychosocially. Our minds and senses function properly when they reveal reality to us and lead us to knowledge of truth. And we flourish as human beings when we embrace the truth and live in accordance with it. A person might find some emotional relief in embracing a falsehood, but doing so would not make him or her objectively better off. Living by a falsehood keeps us from flourishing fully, whether or not it also causes distress. This philosophical view of human well-being is the foundation of a sound medical practice. Dr. Michelle Cretella, the president of the American College of Pediatricians-a group of doctors who formed their own professional guild in response to the politicization of the American Academy of Pediatrics-emphasizes that mental health care should be guided by norms grounded in reality, including the reality of the bodily self. “The norm for human development is for one’s thoughts to align with physical reality, and for one’s gender identity to align with one’s biologic sex,” she says. For human beings to flourish, they need to feel comfortable in their own bodies, readily identify with their sex, and believe that they are who they actually are. For children especially, normal development and functioning require accepting their physical being and understanding their embodied selves as male or female.
