"It's over Johnny. It's over!" "Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me, huh? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!" Fun Fact: The large piece of rotten canvas that Rambo finds in the woods and cuts into a makeshift coat was in fact not a movie prop, but a real piece of rotten canvas found by the film crew during the movie's production. Since there was only one piece, Sylvester Stallone joked about how the canvas became a treasured prop on the set. After filming ended, Stallone kept the rotten canvas and still has it in his possession to this very day. Crew Shout-Out Fact: According to Sylvester Stallone in the DVD commentary, the names of the people on Rambo's team in Vietnam (as read by Col. Trautman) are actually names of various people of the film's crew, including make-up artist Michael Westmore and costume designer Tom Bronson. Art Before Ego Fact: Sylvester Stallone hated the first cut of the film so much that he tried to buy the film back and destroy it. When he couldn't do that, he suggested that the producers cut much of his part and let the rest of the characters tell the story. That cut the movie time in half and set a precedent for future action movies.

Right. The Sheriff was looking forward to settling down and retiring after a not so great life. He actually was fairly decent to Rambo at first, including getting him something to eat (even if the placed served him a nasty burger). But Rambo made the choice to go back into town. The sheriff was kind of a mirror image of Little Bill in "The Unforgiven". Both were trying to settle down, but Teasle wasn't a bad guy while Little Bill was.

I’m glad you identified early on that the character had PTSD. It eluded many who thought it purely was an action film. Sure, there’s plenty of action, but the meaning was always deeper. When Rambo finds out Danforth is dead in the beginning, his character is defeated. That’s why he said “Back here there’s nothing.” Everything the machine sent him to love, fight for and protect was gone. He came back to a life he could no longer recognize. Cheers to a great reaction! 🍻

GROSS but cool fact: 8:01 that filthy, greasy, moldy tarp Rambo is cutting into a Poncho isn't a movie prop, he genuinely found it right there while filming this scence, including the old rope he used as a belt. Originally, Rambo was supposed to only wear that sleeveless T-shirt but they didn't realise how cold it would be. Stallone was so cold that he figured this is something a person like Rambo would actually do to survive, so he went all in and improvised this scene as they were filming it. He actually kept the Poncho he made as a memento of his time filming there. The wardrobe deparment made extra Ponchos from the remaining part of that filthy tarp Stallone found, to maintain that specific look throughout filming. They also used some of it to add an extra layer underneath, to keep Stallone warmer during filming.

I had almost forgotten that Sly used to be young ;) An iconic role and a much deeper dive than you might first expect. Over the years, this movie has reminded me that all is seldom as it appears. One of the things that has always struck me about this movie (and there are many), is how little control the sheriff has over his men. You would think he would have noticed, but I guess he was too busy spending all his time running for re-election.

Sheriff chose not to see it, maybe he couldn't being just as crazy. Let his war buddy run wild and bully the lower ranked offices. Buddy could 'monkey paw' an order and no matter how wrong, it was allowed. Friendship with the boss. Plain fear of his crazy ass from the other guys. The weekend warriors / soldiers, well they were something else. Not much to do with the cops. A bit smarter about staying safe. I wouldn't really call soldiers the Sheriff's men. So of course they don't gotta listen to him.

26:26 - A tired, hungry war veteran suffering from PTSD finds out that the last of his Viet Nam unit died the year prior from cancer. On his way to locate food, he is arrested, clubbed, kicked, hosed down and restrained forcefully. He finally snaps, excapes jail, and is hunted into the mountains by police, dogs, helicopter and National Guard. He successfully defends himself by incapacitating all his armed pursuers. A grenade-launcher forces him deeper into a cave complex with no obvious exit/s except for the entrance of the cave. He eventually escapes the cave system, hijacks a truck, beats a heavy roadblock, returns to the town and destroys the place. He blows up a gas station, car dealership, and a guns & ammo store. All damage incurred could have been avoided by providing access to a hot meal and hospitality earlier in the day.

Sly is one of the most underrated actors ever to do it. My three biggest hurdles as to any movie or actor is 1, do they look the part (i.e. am I buying that they're completely competent for their complete job description IRL), and can I tell you're "acting" during an emotional scene, angry or sad (crying especially). Dude was looking gooood but not "plump" so, yes, Sly Stallone is just as capable as John Rambo is put to same tests. Dude puts off an aura that says every single man on the planet should respect what this man capable of, regardless of who YOU are, which is ANYTHING. And he makes you feel horrific because he plays broken perfectly. That IS someone who's breaking from PTSD (vet specific stuff too). Crying from trauma. Him breaking down in Rocky is just someone actually loosing it over a parent. He doesn't get credit for his talents in those situations. Not a second of acting caught on film with him.

This movie is my favorite movie of all time. I saw it in theaters when I was 12. It changed my life. I joined the Army because of this film. The original movie was 3 1/2 hours long. the fight in the woods was 45 minutes in itself. Stallone hated the movie. He tried to buy it so nobody would see it. But, that didn't work so they edited it to what you just watched. That line "In town you're the law, out here it's me." is one of the best lines ever written. Now that you've seen the movie, you need to read the book. It's completely different. Rambo is not the hero you root for. His PTSD is so extreme and visceral. But, the book gives you true insight into what and why Will acted like he did, and it gets into Rambo's head and thoughts. The book is every bit as good as the movie, but in a completely different way.

I was born in 1972 in a small rural town in NC. My dad used to beat up on my mom and one time she ran out the back door in her nightgown after he pulled a shotgun on her. She went to the neighbor's house and called the cops. I remember watching out the window when the cop car pulled up in front of our house. My dad walked out to meet them, leaned down and talked to the two cops through the open passenger window. I'll never forget hearing the three of them joking and LAUGHING. Then they just drove away. Never even talked to my mom, didn't arrest my dad, NOTHING. I was about 8yo at the time. Anyone who thinks the way this movie portrays small town cops in that era is BS has no clue.

Not just small towns. I grew up in a small city and the cops would leave certain families' kids alone, and usually their friends. The kids still had to be a little careful and not be too open, or they'd get a slap on the wrist, but they got away with all kinds of things.

@@nataliefaust7959 Not just in that era, but it was especially bad back then. There's a guy who's on the police force right now in the same town who tried to sexually assault my best friend back in high school. But another close friend of mine has a son who's a cop in a neighboring town and he's one of the good ones. Helps the elderly load their groceries in the car at Walmart, coaches youth football, and buys meals for the homeless out of his own pocket. His mom worries herself sick about him getting hurt or killed on the job every day and I don't blame her. It's a dangerous profession that doesn't pay nearly enough. The only people willing to do it are either on a power trip or genuinely committed to protect and serve. There's no in between.

@@Thane36425 I get it. I was a poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks and there sure wasn't any "get out of jail free card" for me or any of the other kids in my neighborhood. Luckily we were all pretty good kids who didn't cause trouble but then again we knew we had to be too.

@@tgfitzgerald I was Middle Class and lived in the same area as some of those kids, and was even friends with them for a while. Once we got to our teens and they could start getting away with stuff, or blame others like myself who weren't "in" enough, that changed. We did out things and they did theirs, which frequently involved harassing us and trying to get us to respond so they could play victim and get us in trouble.

The book is a bit different from the film. Another good Morrell adaptation is The Brotherhood of the Rose with Peter Strauss, the first of a trilogy of books (they filmed the first one only, but it stands alone well and delivers, very gripping stuff, also with Robert Mitchum). I remember being a bit confused about the good guy / bad guy roles here, but I was rather young when I watched this, and it's not a Gary Cooper film. Sheriff Teasle and John Rambo both were in different wars, Will served in Korea in 'The Forgotten War' and Rambo in Vietnam. Teasle was miffed with the WWII vets for finishing as winners when his efforts were forgotten (he has medals on his desk), same with Rambo, the Vietnam vets got the attention in those days. Fine film.

Vietnam war - father came back pretty much whole. Unless you pointed a gun at him. Guy tried to rob my dad. Stuck again in his face a ask for wallet. Dad said he kept it under the seat, guy said get it, Dad reached under and pulled out a .45 and told the guy to drop his gun and wallet in the floorboard. Drove straight to police station, explained what happened and cops told dad to pray the guy doesn't show up because Dad would be arrested for robbing the guy. Dad's subconscious reaction to a gun to the face is to return the favor.

One of the sad realities of our history is people today don't generally know or understand how Anti-war people were during the Vietnam conflict. They didn't just take their anger and vitriol out on the government. They took it out on the soldiers. My Father served just after Vietnam ended, and even He, a 20-something who never saw Nam, was called a baby killer and murderer by people. In fact, the first person who ever thanked my Father was an older woman at an Air Show when I was 6 years old. Almost 30 years after he had been in the service, someone Finally thanked him for volunteering. As much as I believe our country fails veterans now. It pales in comparison to how utterly we failed the Veterans of Vietnam.....

Rambo dies in the novel. 2nd is Vietnam 80s action extravaganza, as is the 3rd tho in Afghanistan during a specific time when Russia threatened territory in Afghanistan before modern day powers existed in that region. 4th back to Nam for gritty action thriller, 5th a Sothern border kidnap thriller slasher ... all great in their own Rambo way
