One reason a working ornithopter has proven so difficult to make is obvious when you compare the size of a birds flying muscles relative to its body mass. If a human's pectorals were the same size proportionately, they would cover the entire front of your ribcage and stick out a couple of feet or more from your chest.

Not the first attempts. Most of these probably date to the 20s or 30's and were alternative ideas for aircraft, mostly made by people who had no idea what they were doing.

The thing about the 'Ornithopter' is that if he had fixed the wings and tail together, put an up right tail fin on it with ailerons and stuck a propeller on the front then it would have actually flown. Little did he know at the time.

Actually, the first "gliding flights" were made by Otto Lilienthal. The Wright Brothers made the first havier-than-air flying machine with a launching device, and Santos Dumont made the first autonomous havier-than-air flying machine as we know today (i.e. the plane you catch to go on vacations).

There is more footage of the one guy at 1:06 who later took a plunge off of a railroad bridge and into a river. I'd say that's the act of someone who really is convinced.

Many of the comments are very harsh. You guys know if it wasn't for experiments like this, perhaps as silly as you make them out to be.. There would still be no flying machines and people will still be attempting this. So have some godamn respect for these men instead if bashing them like immature toddlers..

No these are attempts to fly by a bunch of people who had no freakin' idea. People such as Cayley, Lilienthal and Hargreaves all contributed ideas that actually led to powered flight. None of their efforts appear in this clip.

Some of these were actually created as a joke, especially the "ornithopter" which was done as a part of comedy short in the 1930s. Others were created by your typical "never say die and never think things through" inventors who were still attempting wild means of flight long after the Wright Brothers showed how it was done.

These are the first recorded video attempt to fly by men. =P
