First Attempt Raffan Method, Second Turning Wet Cherry

None of the methods of second-turning bowls that I've seen match the speed and simplicity of Richard Raffan's method, so I tried it, all except for the speed part. But that will come with practice.
When first turned only a month earlier, moisture content of the blank, cut from a rain-soaked cherry stump, was 48%. I don't have a kiln, but wood dries fast in the outflow of my shop dehumidifier. At second turning, the moisture meter registered almost zero.

you probably know the story. I made a couple of projects on a wood lathe in junior high school wood shop in the 1950s. I didn't touch a lathe again until July last year. I'd watched a few woodturning videos and got the bug. The prices of new lathes stopped me, but I found a lathe like the one I'd used in junior high at a sale and bought it for $200. That, and a few tools, got me started.
After I had enough experience to have a good idea of what I wanted to turn and what equipment I'd need to do that, I bought a Laguna Revo 12/16 with the bed extension that can also mount low on the left side to allow turning larger bowls. I expect this lathe to serve for the rest of my turning life.
Woodturning is an adventure in learning and creating. It's great fun, even for a beginner.

Tried this earlier this year with a small bowl. I took too much off the outside and lost it on the hollow. Thanks for sharing 👍. I'm going to try again soon.

I almost did exactly the same thing on the one I did right after this one. We'll both be smarter next time.
nicely done. Of all the tools in my arsenal I like Richard the best, a fine legacy he's leaving.

Use original tenon to form new internal mortice, tick. Use new mortice to refine tenon/foot and work outside, tick. Flip around and work on inside tick. Use brush to apply finish ......where's the sock??? No sock, no Raffen method! 🤣 Seriously though, great work! Cheers from across the Pond, Dave

Ah, the famous sock. If I ever decide to use oil and beeswax, I'll definitely use a sock.

Yes, finally. But I can hear the progress of recovery in the voiceovers toward the end. Amazing how much oil that soaked up. Wish I'd thought to weigh it before and after oil.
