My grandfather, before I was born, looked down the barrel of a mortar firework he thought failed to fire. It fired when he was looking down it. Lost his left eye and broke, y'know, most of the left side of his face. Doctors were surprised he wasn't dead. They put his skull and face together using, from what I understand, plastics and by they time they released him the only real noticeable damage was the missing eye. He lived another 50 years. Point being- fireworks are just pretty bombs. It's still a bomb and doesn't care you think it's pretty.

Some people don't realize the true force behind these things. About 7 years ago now, one of my buddies from high school had a little brother who had just turned 21, drinking with his buddies, and lighting off fireworks on the 4th. One of his brother's buddies had the horrible idea to strap a firework on top of a hard-hat, and have someone wear it and light it off, and I'm not sure, but they were probably trying to record it also. Well, they lit the firework, and when it exploded, the overpressure wave from the explosion ripped through the hard-hat and traveled through his ears and eyes, and essentially liquified part of his brain. Look at what overpressure waves do to organs and flesh in the human body. This video is a good example. He survived part of the night in the ICU, but died the next day. Stay safe out there, people, and always treat fireworks as if they're dangerous, because they certainly are.

There have been multiple people who have died this exact way, most notably one of the actors who used to play Gaston at Disney World who died at age 20 after launching a mortar-type firework off the top of his head. It apparently completely blew his head apart. You’re right, people don’t realize the downward force generated by a large firework taking off and how anyone who tries this stunt will die. Fireworks are not toys, people.

My aunt’s methed-out husband once tried to launch a mortar firework while holding the launch tube in his lap. Instead of blowing the firework high up into the sky the initial detonation blew out the bottom of the launch tube and pulverized his legs and junk. This caused him to try curling up in pain which caused him to kind of hunch forward over the still-ticking firework sitting in his lap. When the main shell exploded he took it directly to his torso, legs, arms, and face. The damage he suffered was on par with Adam’s RPG accident. He lived but had some pretty gnarly burn scars all over the front of his body.

My ex was a paramedic in Detroit. He picked up a woman on July 5th who had found an M80 in her boyfriend's pocket and, thinking it was a candle due to extreme intoxication, lit it. Upon arrival on scene, all hand bones were intact, although completely denuded of flesh. Bleeding was minimal due to cauterization. Interestingly, tendons were still intact, demonstrated when the patient tapped on the hand of said paramedic, COMPLETELY FREAKING HIM THE EFF OUT. So. That's what happens, kids.

40 years ago I was a park ranger at a giant park that was having 4th of July celebrations all day. Early evening we came under intense fire from drunks shooting roman candles and bottle rockets at us. No one was injured, but I had a bottle rocket fly into my open jacket and explode by my side. Later that night there was a professional fireworks show where they fired the mortars over the large lake in the park. I had the awesome duty of going out on the lake in our boat, parking under the arc of the fireworks, and watching the show from the best seat in the house (just in case a dud fell into the lake, to retrieve it before kids got it -- not sure that would have been healthy for me, but I was young). It was really, really beautiful, magnified by the colors reflecting off the water all around me.

Roughly 12 years ago. My uncle had a very traumatic injury due to fireworks. For some context, we had golf ball sized fireworks that would output roughly half a stick of dynamite in explosive power, those little bastards would blow a hole in the ground almost a foot deep and roughly a foot around. So needless to say, they pack a punch. But the one he was holding when it exploded prematurely, was the size of a men’s softball. So imagine the sheer destructive difference between the golf ball sized one and the one he was holding. When it exploded, thankfully the only thing that was caught in the blast was his right hand, holding it. But when I say it turned his hand into a red mist, and peeled his skin back like a banana, from his wrist almost 3/4ths the way to his elbow. In the end he lost his hand completely and no fingers or anything were found to reattach. We found a new respect for fireworks after that.

I know how that feels, but by a different cause: Years ago, I was grinding a piece of steel on a bench grinding wheel to prepare it to be TIG welded. I was holding it in my hand (should have been using pliers or something, because it was a small piece) and I got the angle wrong holding it against the wheel. The steel must have flipped over (or something like that) and in the space of a blink, the grinding wheel caused the piece to SLAP the tips of my fingers on both hands. The pain was so bad I thought for sure my finger tips were broken (they weren't), but they were numb to the touch for a couple of hours.

I had that exact thing happen during New Year's Eve celebrations in Germany some years ago. My brother and I had procured the family fireworks supply that year, and we'd found (among other things) a box of something like two dozen "Böller" (large firecrackers), each about an inch and a half wide and about four inches long. Normally, fireworks sold for New Years in Germany are high quality. To be imported they have to undergo strict inspections, so one rarely has problems with them. This box, however, was different. I suspect it was overstock from the previous year and had been stored in a damp place, because we were getting very inconsistent results from the ones we tossed off the balcony. Some went "Bang!" as intended. Others blew sparks out the fuze plug, or out of both ends. Probably because the clay plugs that seal the ends of the tube had deteriorated and weren't holding the pressure in. We also had a few completely fail, with no explosion when the fuse burned down. The last one I threw, I held with my thumb and forefinger, by the end opposite the fuse. I had my arm back ready to throw, my brother lit the fuse, and I started to throw it. The fuse malfunctioned. Instead of burning down, the flame jumped immediately to the firework, and the damn' thing went off in my hand. But...because I was only gripping the end of the cylinder, "all" that happened was that my hand went numb, the side of my face felt like I'd been slapped very hard, and I had some really great tinnitus in my right ear for the next five minutes or so. We retired that box after that incident, needless to say. The rest of the evening's fireworks, however, went off without a hitch.

Between hydraulic presses, press brakes, machine tools of all kinds dating back to 1920s and no saftey mechs of any kind, I am blessed to have all my digits. Add fireworks into the mix and it's a downright miracle I have any fingers at all.

I was at a fireworks show on a golf course when I was a teen - a VERY long time ago. A mortar bomb didn't fully go off, and landed a few feet from some people. The salute blew a crater in the ground about an inch deep and more than a foot across. Thank goodness nobody was hurt!

I discovered the electric torch idea for fireworks 20 or so years ago. A friend invited my daughter and I over for the 4th. I was getting the 4th. I was getting the punks out and my buddy came down the driveway with a torch and an ear to ear grin. He clicked it on.... I also remember a story from high school days from Kansas. Some kids bought a gross of M80s, and were going down the highway in a pick up. They were lighting them and tossing some out the window. One went into the bed of the pick up where the bulk were stashed, and it blew the rest of the M80s up killing the kids. Darwin award!

Just a friendly tip here, its annoying to pester us about subscribing every two minutes of the videos. I am subscribed and find these clips very interesting, no need lower the respect for the audience, the channel will grow as long as you guys makes good content, and people will subscribe, just don't worry to much about it, and if you don't get the growth you want, its not the people who already subscribed fault. Thanks
