CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlie (Drew Barrymore) unleashes all her power, destroying everything in sight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Firestarter is based on a bone-chilling novel by Steven King. Drew Barrymore plays Charlie McGee the young daughter of Andrew (David Keith) and Vicky (Heather Locklear) McGee, who years earlier had been guinea pigs for a top secret experiment. As a result, Charlie has acquired the unenviable ability to start fires simply by thinking about fires. Charlie is pursued over hill and dale by The Shop, a secret government organization bent upon using her skills for nefarious purposes. The special effects are undeniably startling, even when the script and dialogue are straight out of the funny papers (it's hard to keep a straight face during the New York Times final shot!) The high-priced cast--including George C. Scott, Art Carney, Louise Fletcher--seems to be having a grand ole time.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1984)
Cast: Drew Barrymore
Director: Mark L. Lester
Producers: Frank Capra Jr., Martha De Laurentiis
Screenwriters: Stephen King, Stanley Mann

Years after this, Drew once said that she was quite nervous and uncomfortable about doing this whole sequence. It easy to understand why. Although the director had assured her that she would be in no danger, she still didn`t like having to go through with it. That may explain why she's walking at a sort of careful pace here.

It happens in real life. There was a Rotweiller that we needed to sedate inorder to manage a wound on it. We thought the dog was down after injecting it and we swing into action, upon getting close, the dog suddenly jumped up and everyone took cover, there was door close by and some run to the door and as the last person entered he shut the door with dog already inside, the next thing was people yelling, hitting door and then boom the door open and everyone was flying out.

I really loved this scene in the book. The movie's depiction wasn't as spectacular as I imagined it, but that's not a disappointment really. In the book, Charlie's power took on a life of its own and had to be reined in before it REALLY went crazy. The ending suggests that Charlie is slightly addicted to her power, and that she was curious about what else she could blow away with it...like the sun. It's funny to say, but I found this quite chilling.

I don't remember the entire film, I saw it when it first came out - however, what I do remember is that she was the victim. She was a sweet little girl that they exploited. Obviously in reality most people wouldn't applaud violence and destruction as a solution to anything, but in the past few years I have unfortunately learned first hand what it feels like to be abused, peresecuted, laughed at and even worse - and even though they are just angry words coming out of my mouth to cope with the hurt - I sometimes think that maybe human beings or and/or otherwise who use their time and efforts, and have the access to destroy the life of a fellow human being, that maybe they will only learn by having the same horrors imposed upon themselves. Hate and hurt steals the goodness from our hearts and souls.

When he died after giving her permission, that's all she needed to bring Hell to Earth. Unlike Carrie, though, they refused to kill Charlie and in both book and film, she went where she knew she would be loved and taken care of. The Manders knew how dangerous Charlie could be when provoked...and loved her as if she were their own granddaughter. Carrie, however, was murdered after killing those who tormented her. Has her mother not been deranged and open minded, Carrie might have been trained to control her abilities.

Just like John Rainbird tells her earlier,"You're dangerous, Charlie, and you know it,"(even if "that's not her fault,"it's ultimately all a result of that experiment that her parents had participated in when they were in college which had earned them psychic abilities and thereby producing a kind of mutant child, the "Z factor"who was their daughter Charlene or "Charlie" with the absolutely uncoveted gift for pyrokinesis, yes, very akin to Carrie White's talent),but still, even if it's not exactly her fault that she has it, heck-it doesn't make anyone any less afraid of her than they'd be of someone who could deprive you of your pants by merely thinking about it or wishing it on you, for example, by PURE MAGIC. I know what I had said several years back, that it's like you have to feel so sorry for a poor orphaned and unloved eight or nine year old, but still the way Charlie can wish someone to burn up by mere magic(simply thinking about it, wishing it on a certain person or people),hey-it's no wonder in the book, in the part that corresponds to this part of the movie, after she burns up everyone and everything in sight, there's that woman who calls her a witch-no wonder she compares Charlie to a witch, with her so-called gift for "black magic,"if you will.

And as for the reason Andy and Vicky had even participated in that experiment in the first place when they were in college, it seems I remember reading in the book it was because they both were in desperate need for lots of money(which participating in the experiment would pay them lots of money for),for example, both of Andy's parents had passed on and his only living relative was his Aunt Cora who was even getting up in years. Too bad for both of them that it seems they had both had to choose participating in such an unreal experiment as a so called last resort as a means of earning lots of money, if the reason was in both their cases their next of kins were either gone or aging.

(Contd, from below),but still, to visualize a nine year old orphaned, unloved, and thus completely on their own,is truly heartbreaking. As Stephen king even wrote in the book, right before the end, where Charlie has written Irv and Norma a short and sweet note,"I think i know what to do now. Love,Charlie,"then stolen away,"She had escaped the Shop again, but wherever she was now,she was alone. The only consolation was that this time she didn't have nearly as far to hitch." And,in short,by now,for anyone whos read the book, as you know,by now the Shop has found out where she is,and thus travels up to the Manders place, but they're too late,as Charlie has upped and vanished by then, down to New york to have her big story published at long last. The film's ending is better.

I just rewatched this sci fi masterpiece last week.. It seems like it gets better with age.. The cast was beyond phenomenal.. George C Scott, Martin Sheen, David Keith, Art Carney Drew Jesus! Thing is while the remake was ok it felt a bit unnecessary.. Why not just let Drew just do a sequel so we find out what ultimately happened with Charlie!? Granted there was a sequel that was adequate it did feel a little non canon without Ms Barrymore

Rather than a remake, I would like to see a Terminator 2 style sequel, which would be a sequel that is more of a sci-fi action thriller than a sci-fi horror thriller but has a great story, an intelligent plot, dazzling and groundbreaking visual effects, along with some intense action sequences and pays tribute to the original and ties in with the original. I think a good plot idea for a sequel could be that it takes place about twenty years after the original where Charlie is now a young single mother in her early 30's who is trying to live a peaceful and quiet life with her 8-10 year old son who has extraordinary but deadly powers of his own but their life of solitude is interrupted when a top-secret U.S. government agency creates a police force that consists of genetically-altered military operatives to hunt down and capture or exterminate humans with superhuman capabilities. Both Charlie and her son run for their lives when it is discovered that Charlie is still alive and now has son who may be more powerful than she is. The two of them eventually unite with a elite team of superhuman rebel fighters to take down and destroy this shadowy government agency that also has a hidden devious plot to not only wipe out every superhuman on the planet but overthrow the U.S. government as well as the other governments of the world and form a one-world empire under the rule of a corrupt right-wing politician currently running for president. What do you think about that?

Drew Barrymore was probably the best female child actress from the 80s she had a dark childhood but now today she is doing better she has her own tv show and she has two daughters. I used to have a crush on her when I was in middle school and high school. Today she is more focusing on her daughters and her tv talk show than she is in acting. She is also Adam Sandler's female movie sidekick kind of like the late Chris Farley and David Spade team.
