    So much hate for Dylan, but his type of personality is what a lot of the counter cultures are made of. It's what many times makes it interesting, much like Andy Warhol, or David Bowie. Not that Dylan is at the caliber of popularity yet, but the personality he has of not giving a fuck and just doing himself is what attracts many to him. It counters other skaters like P-Rod, and most of the street league roster really well. It's like he is part of the artistic side of skateboarding, which by default is somewhat pretentious and careless, while the other side is the more sport oriented, jock type. Point is, Dylan is alright and definitely doesn't deserve all the hate he gets, just look at Ricky Oyola, he is one cocky guy, yet much of the skate community looks up to him and what he did .

  • @seanXradmer

    @seanXradmer

    9 жыл бұрын

    juvedoo99 People hate him because his personality seems fake and contrived and is essentially just a calling card for the psuedo counter cultural fashion that is commonplace in society (and in skateboarding) nowadays. Skateboarding used to be counter cultural on its own and unfortunately that's not completely true anymore, and now you have him modeling for Vogue and doing ads for DKNY and shit, yet complaining how corporate and mainstream it is to show how much he doesn't give a fuck and is "doing himself." Can't knock his hustle, but don't be a fucking hypocrite. His skating is incredible by the way, and maybe if he put out more actual footage instead of stupid interviews where he chain smokes and babbles incoherently the whole time, I'd be more of a fan. But fuck it, he's probably snorting blow out of a model's asshole right now and could give a shit less about what anyone says to/about him, and more power to him. But the hipster trend's gonna die just like the big pants/small wheels trend, it just won't be looked back on as fondly because it coincides with the fashion trends of society as a whole. Also, Ricky Oyola's EE3 part is one of the most important in the history of skateboarding, Dylan helped popularize skaters wearing pants too short for them. No comparison, but I kinda see where you're coming from. Respect.

  • @juvedoo99

    Sean Radmer I get what you mean. I do believe perhaps he doing all the modeling is a "fuck you" to it, since he is making money off it. Much like street league, and how he acted on it. I understand it's hard to see, but Dylan is in essence what the art, "real" hipster types are. What I mean is that he is very nihilistic and careless, when the pseudo hipsters truly just follow a trend and are unaware of the artistry and such that encompasses the counter culture. Dylan was doing this way before it become popular thanks to guys like Jason Dill, who was doing it more than a decade ago. What I meant about Ricky wasn't his skating, but his attitude as a person. Dylan's reminds me of it a lot. We have to realize, many of these trends have been present for decades, just in the underground. If the mainstream trend of being a hipster dies in the mainstream, it will still be around in the underground, and I think Dylan wouldn't change his look or personality because of it. My point is Dylan is not a hypocrite, but rather smart and understands he wont be living off board sells, so he uses what he has to his advantage. Is it what he wants to do? Perhaps not, but in the US you gotta play the game, regardless of what you think is right. Unless you want to fade into obscurity. Just my POV.

  • @seanXradmer

    juvedoo99 Fair enough, I think we both may be overthinking it. As I stated there's nothing wrong with the fact the guy makes money outside of skateboarding, but then to complain about Converse, Nike, Adidas, or other non-skate companies being in it only for the money is kind of hypocritical when his bills are paid by doing ads for high end clothing companies, "How to dress skater" articles in Vogue, and weed socks sold at Zumiez, no matter how much I agree with him (which I do, for the most part). Glass houses, mate. It's because of this I don't find his "nihilistic and careless" personality genuine, but if he ever puts out a part again, it will most likely be sick. Also, people also seem to forget that there was a period in the 90s that Vans, one of the companies most associated with skateboarding, pretty much bailed due to lack of profit and no one ever calls them out. Most of their money now comes from trendy mall kids but at least that helped them to finally put out a fucking video. But that's besides the point. Yeah, Paul Rodriguez (I refuse to refer to refer to him as P-Rod, GROSS) skates big contests and is sponsored by Target and Mt. Dew which is corny as fuck, but at least he owns it. Also, am I the only person who can't stand Jason Dill? Mosaic and Photosynthesis are 2 of my favorite videos ever, and I've never been able to stand that guy. He's like Gonz if Gonz were white, boring, had no soul, and was addicted to opiates.

    Sean Radmer I think it's hard to sympathize or understand Dylan, and Dill because they seem to to be the "anti" skateboarding persona for the most part. They go against the skateboarding "rules" for lack of a better word, and do whatever they want. Skateboarding, as much as of counter culture has had some type of rules and things most skaters live by. Guys like Dylan and Dill go against that and that bugs people, because it's different and not what skating "has to be". Personally, I like Dill's skating a lot. His personality is not really what I admire, but he does bring some valid points about skating. I also think his nihilistic views are genuine, because he seems to understand that whatever he does is essentially meaningless and really holds no real importance. That's why he does what he does.

Janoski is a cool dude and he gets credit for that shoe but in my own opinion people have the right to skate how they want and dress too! I like Dylan way better than any other dude just beacause of his style and not because he is good ..skateboarders just have preference on certain brands.

    I love Dylan, he's the shit. Sick skating, sick style. I get what he's saying, I really do. I don't always agree with him, sometimes seems like he rambles on about everything that HE does not do. I think it's great that skating now has major brands like Nike, New Balance and Addidas behind it. For example, Koston and P-Rod, no one can say these two legends did not pave deep paths for skateboarding. They ride with Nike and I guess it kinda is weird that Nike's actually a major skateboarding brand now. But Nike in particular though, if you really do your research has always been apart of street skateboarding. I remember watching 90's clips of people like Josh Kalis and that whole Philly crew killing it at Love Park with Nike Dunks on. This was before "skateboarding" brands like Circa, Fallen, Emerica, E'S, etc, etc were even out. I definitely see both sides of this though. While I do enjoy skateboarding becoming more mainstream, I also feel that it needs to be cool and low-key. Idk. Fuck it.

    i have several deathwish tattoos ( though i never rode for them but supported and bought their boards exclusively for 5 years) and i moved on from them to threat and am waiting for f.a. to have boards in my size. myth kid is right, you should never stagnate. evolution is a key element inside skateboarding. we all make changes in life on and off the board. tattoos are just a stamp for a memory about a time in anyones life and what that means to someone. i will always back deathwish but i feel like i too need a change of scenery. " f.a. is the future"

    I agree with this dude 110% , fucking street league and all these big corporate sponsors are ruining skateboarding , I love what Dylan does and the whole FA hockey crew , his huf part was amazing...the whole artsy thing was a lil to much in my opinion but you can't deny his talent and for that he's in the clear , skating doesn't have rules and the way big corporate skating is portrayed makes it not as fun as it once was , that's why the whole 90's thing is coming back and I couldn't be more thrilled , the look now is so 90's without the super baggy pants and 45mm wheels but FA is the sickest company out right now and Dylan is killing it

    45mm wheels in the early 90s? Dude, so many people I skated with at that time (and Me) were running 40mm, even 39s. Just barely above bearing diameter. And even most of the top vert guys were rocking that wacky shit. It was an odd and interesting time for skating for sure.
