I've used Blackbeards fire rope in some seriously wet conditions. It works great. Catches quick and burns a long time.

You can make your own by coating cotton balls with vasoline, rolling them into cylinders and then coating them in wax.

Brother. Try some lightning nuggets if you’ve never tried them. Amazing! They come in the shape of half a sphere. Burn for over 30 minutes. Worth it to pick some up. Man do they make fire starting easy.

Damnit! When did they start making these? I picked up the Captain's Booty kit about 2 years ago. Came with 4 fire ropes, the ferro rod and striker, a molle compatible carry bag, black beard velcro patch, and Plasma Lighter... They did not even offer me plugs... 😑 I'm guessing when that other company came out with them and made the ropes not look as good in comparison (still worked quite well, the competition's plugs just lasted longer and lit when more wet) so they came out with their own? Now I need em...

I like my Prepared4x torch. If you are up a creek (and sometimes handicap yourself by not using your brain), its a very good one to have. Just fray some of the rope, a good couple strikes, and it lights, and all you have to do is feed more rope if you need more time (because of said "handicap").

If you don’t want to spend as much on the name brand. Academy sells the same things they work great and you can start them with a ferrel rod after you bust it open. They burn long enough to get a fire started l. I always use two of them for extra flame

The key to lighting most natural tinder is the word DRY. So using an artificial source even if only to start is really useful, and if you don't have fancy fire plugs use the old fashioned cotton balls with petroleum jelly in them,or something else that is waxy oily and flamable.

Saw a vid one time dude took his woman’s circular cotton swabs soaked in wax and I copied it and been using them to get my charcoal started seem to work great unless you over saturate I thought more wax the better but the ratio to cotton has to be within a certain range for peak performance

I used empty paper egg cartons, filled each "egg holder" with drier lint, wood chips and sometimes added tiny dry pine cones...then poured melted wax over the entire egg carton. When l needed to start a fire, l broke off one segment of the wax saturated egg carton, lit it with a lighter (a ferro rod would also work) and they burned hot for about 5 minutes. Not for pocket carry, but for canoe or car camping they are perfect and easy to make at home with the kids for a rainy day project. (Just have the dry ingredients ready ahead of time. And be careful melting the wax...don't use Mom's pots, use empty tin cans. )

EVEN BETTER...and less expensive, is a tablespoon of Vaseline petrolatum jelly wrapped in folded aluminum foil. OR fill a container with Vaseline, like those diabetic test strips come in which are similar to the 35mm film canister containers, dip the tip of twigs, grass, or just about anything else, WET OR DRY, into the container.

Are they more affordable than what one could find in nature? How do they perform against other fire starting tinders like fatwood or cat tail and other common competing brands of tinders and starters? Do they smolder when blown out by wind and there is still an ember or do you have to relight it? I'm not trying to be critical, just curious about fire lighting methods as a survivalist myself. Basically I'm wondering if they are worth the space in my pack.
