Clearly the most memorable scene of the movie, and i loved it as a kid and i still do. Like half of the movie was spent with telling the viewers how much amazing and important this plane is, and now this is the first time we see it and it becomes within reach for the protagonist. The music maybe menacing, but also adds a sense of wonder about the plane, suggesting how great the plane is. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a proper build up. It saddens me how underrated some movies are.

still love this film... my only wish is that they, like they did with Star Wars, have a special edition where they enhance the flying and dog fight sequences as they did in the Death Star Battle at the end... the Migs in those sequences don't look like they are flying, but floating against a background. But the suspense and build up to what we finally see in this scene was very well done.

The great thing about the book is that Gant steals the plane roughly half-way through, so there's a lot more flying action - they trimmed it down for the film, probably because the effects cost so much.

That is true, Robby House. Most of the critics at that time dismissed it as a form of Reagan-era "Evil Empire" propaganda. 1982 was also the year of "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial". While the Hollywood press at the time could not write enough sycophantic accolades for Spielberg's film, they disregarded such future classics as "Blade Runner", "The Thing" and "Tron". As for me, "Firefox" and "Where Eagles Dare" have become my two favorite films from Clint Eastwood's remarkable body of work as an actor and director.

coincidence.. usually many planes end up looking similar due to requiring same solutions to same problems (leading edge extensions wich were first introduced in the F-16 and ended up in F-18, MIG-29, SU-27.. the short angular nose (F-117 inspired i guess) however never became even remotelly simular to anything final
