    Sirisma : Not sure what you mean by "triethylborane will ignite at -20C", its melting point is around -90C and boiling point is around +90C. The issue in this thread is: something is burning, is it hot? So, by analogy: triethylborane is burning, is it hot? The question was, and still is, stupid, whatever the context, including the type of fuel involved. Ignorance? Yeah, a bit in your comment. Common sense needed.

    When I was in Ohio in the early 80s I was sitting in the living room with dad and my sister, and she was about 1. Suddenly there was a loud boom and shake. 5 minutes later we saw all the fire trucks from town start heading south. We followed them, and found that a grain elevator blew up. That was about 4 miles as the crow flies. 4 miles and we felt the rumble. Dust can be very dangerous.

    This is NOT an Explosion, it is a flash fire. Explosion is characterized by a pressure wave, and in this case there is no pressure wave, otherwise the firefighters would have been blasted away some meters (at least) and the building would have been damaged to some extent. Dust explosions are very rare (if not impossible )in the open space, there must be confinement. The video is impressive, but also shows that firefighters usually do not know how to fight industrial fires: 1. they were standing too close-in cases of fires that can escalate, you don't hand/hold the noozle, but use noozles with tripod that operate on their own (water monitors they are called) and watch from safe distance. 2. by throwing water into the vessel through the booom , they dispersed the dust in the vessel, fueled the fire and caused this flash fire. Water should be applied smoothly, in a form of water fog-noozles provide this setting. 3. They throw water to the surface of the vessel, which may be OK if you want to cool the vessel, but in this case the water jet is very narrow and should be like a curtain -noozles provide this adjustment. This is done again with self operating noozles and not with hand held hoses. 4. the firefighters want always to "face attack" the fire and put away quickly, but in a fire like this, you need to apply lots of water from the top (and from a safe distance) and soak the dust.Owners of installations must provide specific guidance to the firefighters, explaining the details that make each industrial fire unique. This cannot be done easily during the event. They should have settled in advance, a relationship of trust and common approach, by common fire drills and discussions.

    well, in reality, this fireball may not have been much hotter than a flare-up on your grill. Dust fires are pretty quick when they are outside. The much larger concern there was if it had shaken the entire hopper empty. If that had been full and emptied because of the dust explosion, that cameraman would have been in serious trouble. Conflagration from dust is extraordinarily dangerous. It's actually a bit surprising that they were hitting it with water from below, and not also from above. I suppose they may have not wanted to create a chimney. But if a chunk had blocked that lower hole, it could had led to a compression explosion and conflagration of the entire contents of the hopper. And those explosions are BIG.

    One important thing: Dust explosions, including wood dust explosions, are really heavy events. If there is a lot of dust around, and it doesn't require much fire, please consider doing something about it. If there is saw dust on the ceiling rafters, please clean it all out. It can catch fire, and explode many times, if you do not clean away pig piles of dust. not just bunnies, dust of any material. If you want to see more, search on youtube for: USCSB kzread.info

    To create your own dust explosion experiment, get a long length of tubing. Stick one end of the long tube to a flat surface. Cover the opening of the tube with a handful of cornflour (custard powder). Place a lit tealight candle in the pile of dust or next to the dust. Cover with a large tin or a bucket... From a good distance away (that is why it is a long tube you use) blow through the tube... The pile of dust becomes airborne, ignites on the candle, burns rapidly and look out for a flying bucket.

    So true! The heavy stream disturbs the dust. That's actually what causes dust explosions in factories. For whatever reason, when some dust gets disturbed it can ignite (like from a spark or a hot torch, or a hot bearing), and the pressure of the sudden flash fire disturbs more dust, which furthers the flash fire. It's not a detonation, but the pressures can still reach high enough levels to cause structural collapse. Usually the dust in dust explosions/fires was collected on beams and other high-up places that people don't normally see.

Also, what purpose using a fog stream from underheath, except to push more air into the confined space of the hopper?!! That only feeds the fire with more air. Question: wouldn't it be better to use nitrogen and fill the bottom area with the stuff to restrict the air around the fire. Slowly filling the area up with a flow of nitrogen air from a (perhaps) liquid nitrogen tank. That would de-crease the risk of the fire finding itself in a flammable area. The water only covers a certain area...

  • @MultiPureEnergy

    @MultiPureEnergy

    5 жыл бұрын

    I’m not sure I quite understand what you are suggesting they do, however, the reason they don’t fight fire with nitrogen in open areas is due to air movement. Fires will create quite a lot of movement in the air around them, otherwise they would self extinguish when they’d consumed enough oxygen. Nitrogen also is almost the same density as air, since air is mostly Nitrogen already. This means that it won’t “pool” in low lying areas, unless it is cold. However, a fire would heat the nitrogen and negate any pooling effect.

    @@Markus-zb5zd I would think that the SCBA, face shields and bunker gear should protect pretty well against a flashburns and lung injury from an instantaneous, ultra-short burst of heat and flame like this, though... As opposed to the damage a half-second of being immersed totally in flame could cause without eye, skin and respiratory protection. If the blast was more powerful or the heat sustained, yeah, it likely wouldn't do much.

    also that's the reason why most countries have a paramedic escort if the firefighters are expected to use BAs,... to be able to respond quickly and treat potential heat shocks or heat strokes and everything else that might happen to the firefighters as I'm a volunteer we have a very diverse volunteer department and we literally have an emergency doctor that is dressing up with us when he's not on duty, so we have paramedics and a doctor in such cases

    My dad was an old-school smoke eater for a small volunteer fire department when I was growing up. Later, after my military service (which included shipboard and aviation firefighting), I worked at a fire department in the next township. We received a mutual aid call to assist the adjoining township at a house fire. We arrived on the scene and I was assigned to a search team. We approached the front door of the house and my dad comes out of the door, wreathed in smoke and says "It's empty." He was in his street clothes and had been working nearby when the call came in. We are all standing there in full turnout gear staring at him.

  • @WildcatWarrior15
    @WildcatWarrior153 жыл бұрын

    They were very lucky that the discharge of the baghouse vented the majority of the deflagration. You can see smoke forced out of the clean air ducting on the roof due to the pressure spike in the entire system. This is a full on dust explosion inside the baghouse that was vented out the discharge. This baghouse has no explosion rupture panels, so this could have easily resulted in a complete baghouse explosion. If properly designed, all explosive dust baghouse should have explosion rupture panels and an internal sprinkler system at a minimum.

    Is it the concussion or the fireball that they have to worry about most in these types of explosions?

  • @ibindare

    @ibindare

    5 жыл бұрын

    Former Firefighter. The concussion is dangerous because if it is big enough you can have internal injuries, and be knocked into objects or struck by flying objects that can also cause injuries, like broken bones; The fireball danger varies depending on the material that is burning and the PPE the firefighter is wearing - and if it is being worn correctly. The PPE should cover all skin (turnout coat, bunker pants, gloves, Nomex balaclava, helmet, boots). Dressed, the turnout gear (PPE) only leaves the face exposed, which is then covered by the facepiece of the SCBA. In addition to protecting from the heat, the PPE also provides a very limited amount of padding that helps protect the body from impact injuries. That being said, it ain't no suit of armor.
