"DI gun poops in its own mouth" lmao!

Funny to think of it that way, but it is supposed to do that. The carbon acts as a dry lubricant and works well when not overly lubed with oil.

@@GreatMercenary Never heard that phrase and I'm old. More familiar with "don't shit in ur mess kit" or just "don't shit where you eat" which I guess kinda translates. Just know my piston guns sure stay cleaner in their "mouths". Think bore snake instead of tooth brush. L8r.

@@microchrist6122 I told my nephews that once. Said to them - "isn't it nice you don't have to powder your balls here in colorado". He repsonded - "yeah, my balls don't stick to my legs as much as they did in Texas. " Used to live SA, went T. Roosevelt high school back in the early 90's. So I knew what it was like, especially in them hot summer mornings after it rained all night. Would have liked to have served but medical conditions kept me out. Father was in for 30 something years as a piolet & instructor on the huey & cobra. Took me up in a trainer once but don't recall what it was, a few different planes too. Love it, wish I could've followed in his footsteps. Anyway, thank you for your service to this country. I hope we can hang on to it.
As for which is better (DI or gas piston), there's an old saying: "There's a time and place for everything."
Really enjoying Eric's physical presentation of the examples as Chad explains them

The AR gas system equalizes the bolt pressure before unlocking. As the gas enters the BCG, the bolt is driven forward against the case in the chamber, and the BC is driven rearward. This keeps the pressure off of the rear face of the locking lugs as the cam turns the bolt. This is the real genius of the AR DGI Hybrid.
@newerest1
2 жыл бұрын
All the more reason to delay the gas arriving at the bolt carrier since it will be even easier to equalize the pressure when the chamber pressure is so much lower
@nickloven6728

Little quirks like that is why I'll probably never sell my AR's. Also the internal piston in the receiver means that it'll blow any debris cover the ejection port before it unlocks to extract the cartridge. This basically means your going to have a hell of a time getting foreign debris into the system, unlike most rifles that eats it right up.
@Vanalos
Жыл бұрын
@@nickloven6728 That's why the piston guns fail the mud tests I believe. They can't blow the stuff out of the ejection port as well. I mean, just some run off the mill AR-15 passes but the MR556 and the NGSW Sig MCX fail?
@Mitchems

@@nickloven6728 I definitely see how that would help in a muddy environment like Vietnam but what about a sandy environment? Wouldn't it do the opposite and blow sand around the BCG and maybe the users face? (speaking of all DI systems with a gas bleed in the bolt)

My takeaway on the DI vs Piston, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Which one is better depends on the application the shooter intends to use it.
Thank you Chad and Eric; this answered several questions that I had on gas piston systems.
I just love occasionally seeing Eric in a Fender Cap, it shows you what a true Renaissance Man he is. Oh and of course, Chad rocks hard as usual with his vast wealth of knowledge and matter of fact style of delivery. Keep 'em comin' guys. You are one of the few gun channels left that I don't have to search for. It's getting bad.

This is why I always come to you for answers. Thank you. Bought my first rifle recently. Spent 1 year with side arms learning and practicing every weekend before moving on to the next phase. You have 2.7 million happy subscribers. Awesome.
Thanks for the info. Knowing what I know now, my DI AR PLATFORM is exactly what I need. And I enjoy cleaning my guns so no love lost. Just need to get another upper and bolt carrier so I can take it from 6.8 spc down to a 5.56 for lower ammo cost at the range. 😎 I will be getting another AR for my son soon and will be sticking with DI for simplicity. Aloha from the Big Island.

Great info guys! Thanks much!
Another great video, love the firearms facts!
"poops in its own mouth" caught me off gaurd. Good analogy though
Tim at military arms channel is at 5,000 rounds without cleaning a bcm rifle and no malfunctions
One of my personal pet peeves is a DI AR is a jam-o-matic. Having spent over a decade in military and law enforcement, the vast majority of weapon malfunctions are magazine related instead of a problem with the firearm itself.

Piston: metal rod slams into a cupped “gas key”. This creates slightly more recoil. This also attributes to slightly less accuracy. DI: gas is fed through a tube into the gas key onto the bolt. This pressure is built over a slightly longer period than the pistons cupped gas key. The action does get dirtier, however, you do incur less recoil thus everything being equal between the two DI is slightly more accurate. If you’re lazy in cleaning then piston is for you. If you care for your guns then DI is preferable. DI guns have been proven to still be reliable after over 1000 rounds fired between cleaning.

I was 20 year in the Air force had a DI AR 15 they got dirty all the time. When i retired I got Piston AR 15 2k to 3k rounds before you clean and it runs cooler action, that's why i choose a piston, pain in the ass to clean! Enjoyed your video always learn something. thanks
Great info. Thanks.
Chad is going for the jerry curl look.
You both are the best explayners thanks
Thanks for the knowledge guys !!!!!!!!!
VZ58 has a great short stroke piston system with a great recoil impulse.. And nearly never needs cleaning..
The MAS 40/49 and AG M/42 are direct gas impingement. The AR platform is a piston system, where the piston is placed in the bolt body.
Thanks for the Video.... Great Information.
Excellent video, really learned from it.
Thanks guy I actually learned a lot. Trying to decide if I want piston or DI and this answered all of my questions i think lol. May just stick with DI and get an adjustable gas block
Really great guys!
Finally ive been looking for this
I have both DI & piston system AR’s both fire reliably & accurately but the cleaning is where I see difference as the DI much harder to clean as there are more to clean than piston.
Great information . Thanks
I have the Odin Works adjustable gas block. it allows me to get rid of all of the excess gas pressure developed when firing the gun. It allows me to tweak many different aspects of the gun

Thanks guys, good vids. I thought about goin for a piston rifle cuz i dont have one but i think im good right were im at. I love my ars the ar platform is a beautiful functioning system. But i dont shoot them anymore, mainly pistols just for competition, and i took out my 6.5 crd n shot a few groups. But i dont stop building the ars they're so satisfying for me, combination of parts, ideas, it its only hobby.👍🇺🇸
The AR system employs a piston in the bolt. It is a misnomer to refer to the AR as direct impingement.

Thanks for the info.👍🏻
One thing I didn’t hear either of you mentioned is about the benefits of Piston vs DI when it comes to lefty’s like myself . The piston systems is much easier to use cause the gas is significantly less in your face for us lefty’s. Just a thought
InRang tv just did a video a few days ago with a hk 416 that shows piston ARs have their place, but also solidifys how Stoner's design blows gunk like mud off the ejection port.
Thanks guys. Very good video.
Great explanations, liked
As Karl Kasarda calls it, "DI Hybrid," because while it's technically just a piston in a different place, it definitely takes influence from earlier DI designs. And no, it doesn't poop in it's own mouth. The gasses don't actually get anywhere near the bolt face and locking lugs. If that really were the case, the gun would be entirely unsuitable for even a small volume of fire, let alone the high volumes that the military expects. People who say that don't understand the system.

high volumes of fire e.g. the colt lmg which was notorious for being not good at high heat and high rates of fire.
A piston is a lot cleaner overall. Cleaning is a breeze even in the piston parts that traps the gas. A lot of the carbon is blown out from the firearm in comparison to di where it seems to be trapped inside the bolt carrier and upper receiver. Just a lot longer and harder to clean.
@toki89666
5 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. An AR is very easy to clean, all the gunk is inside the bolt carrier. And no more gunk gets into the chamber than on a traditional piston gun.
@deplorabledave1048
3 жыл бұрын
DRAMATICALLY cleaner. That is the main reason why I build piston guns. 1000 rounds...it takes two minutes of wiping then a light re oil. That's IT!! Never ever any carbon build up that needs scraping.
@nickloven6728
2 жыл бұрын
While I agree this is true, I was under the impression that carbon acts like a dry lubricant. I mean there are AK's that have never been cleaned and are chugging along. I believe there are AR15's out there with thousands of rounds, never been cleaned and function just fine.
@mrhellotherehowareu1384
2 жыл бұрын
@@nickloven6728 truth is if you squirt oil into it then yeah it could probably run. However th is point is moot. Any quality gun will run dirty but the point here is that as a gun owner I want my firearm clean and pistons make it way easier to clean than spending hours with a dental pick trying to get the little channels inside the bcg.
I saw Eric on Gunny time again. Great job.
Finally glad to see another video come out and say the ar15 is an internal piston.

I installed a piston kit on my 5.56 AR. IMO, it's the best thing I've done for it. With a suppressor, it feels and shoots like a .22lr
@virgosintellect

Keep an eye on the internal wearing of parts. OpRod driven bolt cams, can eat into the upper receiver from all the extra power . Eventually it could cause bolt lugs to batter chamber teeth out of timing.

The ar15 bolt carrier group is basically a pneumatic zylinder. The carrier is the cylinder and the bolt is the piston. That system is different to the other piston systems where the gas block and/or tube is the cylinder and the piston is the piston but it is still piston driven.
That AK firing scene with the mask, tho! LOL
I own almost exclusively external piston systems. My first rifle was an LWRC IC-SPR and got heavily into it. External piston versions of HK, POF, PWS are my other retail firearms. And all of the custom assembled firearms chambered in 5.56, 7.62x39, and 6.8 SPC are also external piston using Superlative Arms kits.

How’s that LWRC IC-SPR? Looking into getting a “One and Done” AR. I was initially looking at a Colt CR6920 & SIGM400 TREAD at my LGS and the clerk showed me his preferred high end AR and it was the IC-SPR. Now im debating on getting one myself instead of a entry level AR.

@@AC.Balteus The LWRC IC-SPR was my first rifle and it is one of my best. For one and done, yes it would be at the top of the list. External piston so it’s cooler and clean. The lower is full ambi and drop in ready for select fire and can probably durable enough to handle it.
