So I knew what it was like, especially in them hot summer mornings after it rained all night. Would have liked to have served but medical conditions kept me out. The AR gas system equalizes the bolt pressure before unlocking. As the gas enters the BCG, the bolt is driven forward against the case in the chamber, and the BC is driven rearward. This keeps the pressure off of the rear face of the locking lugs as the cam turns the bolt. This is the real genius of the AR DGI Hybrid.

Little quirks like that is why I'll probably never sell my AR's. Also the internal piston in the receiver means that it'll blow any debris cover the ejection port before it unlocks to extract the cartridge. This basically means your going to have a hell of a time getting foreign debris into the system, unlike most rifles that eats it right up.

Piston: metal rod slams into a cupped “gas key”. This creates slightly more recoil. This also attributes to slightly less accuracy. DI: gas is fed through a tube into the gas key onto the bolt. This pressure is built over a slightly longer period than the pistons cupped gas key. The action does get dirtier, however, you do incur less recoil thus everything being equal between the two DI is slightly more accurate. If you’re lazy in cleaning then piston is for you. If you care for your guns then DI is preferable. DI guns have been proven to still be reliable after over 1000 rounds fired between cleaning.

As Karl Kasarda calls it, "DI Hybrid," because while it's technically just a piston in a different place, it definitely takes influence from earlier DI designs. And no, it doesn't poop in it's own mouth. The gasses don't actually get anywhere near the bolt face and locking lugs. If that really were the case, the gun would be entirely unsuitable for even a small volume of fire, let alone the high volumes that the military expects. People who say that don't understand the system.

A piston is a lot cleaner overall. Cleaning is a breeze even in the piston parts that traps the gas. A lot of the carbon is blown out from the firearm in comparison to di where it seems to be trapped inside the bolt carrier and upper receiver. Just a lot longer and harder to clean.

That’s why I am very proud of the T91 used by the Taiwanese military! It fixed most of the quirks of Piston Driven system.

My Armoury sergeant told me AR is not DI, It's an internal piston. Unlike AK, AR18, which is external piston.

On a piston AR, you can cut the gas off, with a suppresser, works fine single shot no mech. noise, Iam a left handed shooter w/asthma. Its a piston gun, or none!
