Its unfortunate that when MGSV got approved Konami explicitly denied any licensing for guns, so the team had to make semi-alike weapons that were period appropriate. Kojima is known for trying to make things accurate, so everything being "slightly off" probably was frustrating for him too

Two sides to a story. As far as I'm aware, it was a budget issue rather than an explicit denial for guns/vehicles specifically. Kojima decided it was more important to have his very expensive licensed soundtrack than licensed weaponry.

The ricochet effect with the revolver, I'd like to think, is a callback to the Revolver Ocelot boss fight in MGS1, as the bullets would bounce off of the walls in the room.

The water pistol is not a joke, it's a challenge. You can sneak up on enemies and trick them into dropping their weapon and surrender by threatening them. You get achievements if you finish ops this way. In one of the previous installments you could use a banana for the same challenge, but the water pistol also allows the player to destroy electronic equipment by soaking it. ☺

You can justify it two ways. In real life, they just didn't get the licenses to use the real guns. Mostly it's because in lore a lot of your stuff is developed by your private army, so it has inspo from real guns but clearly deviates a lot. In a meta sense, you often have to license the gun's appearance from its actual creators - it's why you see real-looking AKs in AAA games but often get a knock-off lookalike in less funded ones. So since the game's lore started before Konami could secure those rights, the universe of MGS doesn't have them either - and has an explanation!

When playing Metal Gear Solid games I always thought the mechanic of suppressors wearing out make no sense, but then I saw Forgotten Weapons video about Knight's Hush Puppy suppressor for Beretta M9 meant for pilots where the suppressor has set of wipes that seal themselves after bullet passes through them making it extremely quiet for couple initial shots until they eventually have permanent holes from shooting through them so the suppressor stops being effective. So I guess that game mechanic is kinda grounded in reality.

I think the tornado-6 revolver is a reference to Trigun with it being very similar to Vash the Stampedes signature revolver. Plus Vash is often called the humanoid typhoon so tornado>typhoon isn't so much different from one another. Also Vash was good at ricocheting bullets off of objects, wouldn't be a surprise if the developers were fans of the manga and anime :)

I always like to mention the Trigun connection to the Tornado revolver in MGSV. The twin revolvers in that show have the same long barrel at the bottom of the cylinder with a large metal section on top; in Trigun that section houses a secret secondary weapon with some kind of fantasy powers connected to that whole world's story. Trigun is especially relevant because of the numerous connections between Vash the Stampede, Trigun's protagonist, and Venom Snake, MGSV's protagonist.

Really enjoyed this. I love the weapon design in MGSV. It's clear to me that the folks at Konami who did this had a real affection for Cold War weapon design. Couple of points worth noting: Some of these optics are meant to be an old school aimpoint, but with a magnifier. The game lets you mount the equivalent of an ACOG inline with a reflex, which I thought was nonsense until I read US SOF did that at some point in the 2000s. Some of these weapons come in different calibers when you get into the "tech tree" so if the caliber seems wrong, maybe there's a variant there. I thiiiink the SMGII had a similar buttstock ot the Macht-37.
