Johnathan, there is a “black powder” only season for Whitetail deer in West Virginia every year. While many people use the more modern “in-line” smoothbore guns, there are still many people who use reproduction muzzle-loaders no different than what would have been used to hunt Whitetail 150-200 years ago. My father has, hanging on a wall in his basement, a “Virginia Rifle” manufactured in the 1750s, which belonged to one of our ancestors (I believe the brother of his great-great-great grandfather) and which was used in or around the time of the American Revolution.

So regarding the Nuka Cola rifle... This is a nod. In 1986, Winchester and Coca-Cola created a promotional brand-crossover 94E 3030 and 1500-XTR, sold as a set. 2500 sets were ordered to be manufactured, but they stopped at just under 1600 after Coca Cola pulled out and cancelled. Harper’s Ferry in West Virginia used to be one of the 2 arsenals in the country that made black powder muzzle loading rifles. It was raided by John Brown before the Civil War and became a point of contention during the war. Kind of interesting.

Although they're older, I think Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armories Musuem, would have a field day with the Soldier of Fortune games. Especially with the Desert Eagle reload animation.

Absolutely loved the video as always! In the games defense, the high damaged of the black powder weapons is allowed and or needed as an offset to the slow reload time for balancing. Also the leveling system (though needed due to being a multiplayer open world game) is more of a holdover from its original form upon release. In the initial release enemies would grow stronger depending on the region, and so as you gained higher levels, you needed higher damaging weapons to deal with new threats etc. This allowed for players to have a good idea of the grade and ability of their equipment, relative to the strength of the enemies in a zone this was changed in future updates where now the enemies level is scaled to each players level (so if two players are looking at the same enemy to one it may be a level 100 and to the other its a level 5) so that newer/low level players could play with their higher level friends. Also (something that is still relevant) is that balance wise it allows the game to level lock certain weapons so that you don't have a level 1 player running around with a fatman or auto grenade launcher just decimating all the low level enemies and/or causing a mess. Fun fact: Fallout 4 had a similar system to this, though being a single player game was able to be implemented more subtly. At higher levels enemies start using/spawning less with pipe weapons and more with combat rifles etc. the higher levels allow you to unlock more levels of gun nut, allowing you to modify your weapon to deal more damage to the now higher level and stronger enemies etc.

Yeah, the lack of velocity imparted by black powder weapons(comparatively speaking, of course) is the reason for the 2-bore and 4-bore "stopping rifles". When you absolutely had to put something down, the only way you could reliably do that was with a heavier bullet, since there was a notable limit on the pressure you could develop, and so the velocity you could impart, on a bullet.

The two games that I'd really like Jonathan Ferguson (the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a a collection of thousands of Iconic weapons from throughout history) to react to are Warframe and Nikke. As... unique as the latter game is, there is at least one gun nerd on its development team which means that they have a lot of interesting reload animations, including one where a character swaps out their entire barrel, rather than a magazine or any other ammo storage/feed device.

17:13 180gr. .50cal roundball can get over 2,000fps on a magnum powder charge with a tight patch. People greatly underestimate the power of muzzle-loaders. It just takes three days to load, and will massively rust if not cleaned immediately after shooting.

10:55 Correction. There is a perk in the game called Stabilized under the Intelligence S.P.E.C.I.A.L. that increases the accuracy and armor ignoring capabilities of heavy weapons while in power armor. Yeah, it's tied to a perk, but is an obvious choice for a power armor heavy gunner build.

I realĺy appreciate the giant smoke cloud after firing the blackpowder muzzle loader in this game. It dissipates too quickly, and there isn't the 8 foot flame leaping out the barrel, but I can't think of another game that properly depicts shooting a blackpowder gun. First deer I ever got with a gun was a muzzle loader. I was worried cus I couldn't tell which way it ran with the giant smoke cloud. Once it cleared I could see it didn't run at all. Probably had a heart attack. Imagine going into your kitchen to get a snack and a giant flame jumps out of the houseplant 😂.

Regarding the .50 mechine gun (and the gatling gun and similar weapons), I always imposed a restriction on myself that I could ONLY ise it while in power armor, because otherwise it just felt... silly. Honestly, I think an actual game mechanic that prevents some weapons being used when not in power armor would be a neat addition.

With regards to the 10mm Smg it is a pre war weapon. In general fallout for ballistic weapons follow a very unique design philosophy due to the resource wars and lack of oil supply most modern weapons in the lore are basically just steel aluminum and wood with some rubber. Very little plastics or bakelite. Giving it a very unique design aesthetic as well since it blends in ww2 weapons (which were still in use by many groups), 70s esque weapons, and mashed up modernish weapons with some post war hodgepodges as well. The barrel modifications regarding it are likely post war but do still fit with the weapon designs we’ve seen prior of it.

9:57 The heavy weapons being handheld really only makes sense when wearing Power Armor, since in-universe that's what Power Armor was built to do. So instead of needing an armored vehicle to carry the .50 Cal to the frontline, you just have one guy in the suit carrying it around. 21:10 You have to unlock the Gauss Minigun by raising your reputation with the Raiders faction at the Crater settlement. It's a very powerful weapon, but its ammo is among the heavier ammo types in the game.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that revolver animation was a repurposed shotgun pump animation hand position that cuts off before the actual pump. Look at the frame of the hand holding the gun before the rotation and its a very wide grip, like the character is holding something more tube shaped.
