Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the iconic weaponry of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, including the Type 63 rifle, the Barrett M82 sniper rifle, and the Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War sees the franchise head back to 1981 for a first-person shooter full to the brim of iconic period weaponry like the MP5 submachine gun, the AK47, and the M16 tactical rifle.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weapons of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, including the Russian Type 63 assault rifle, the Barrett M82 sniper rifle, the Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun, and the iconic Colt 1911 revolver. Across the video, Jonathan breaks down the weapons and their in-game functionality, and compares them to their real-world counterparts.

    remember SIR . . you are a WEAPONS master NOT a spy . . ill have you know that in russia they literally built towns with newspapers that circulated real stories and had milkshake spots and the entire town operated with russian spies that trained in these villages or towns with surveillance equipment they installed and to practice and so they would know about the latest movies and stuff when they arrived in north america . . so sorry . . .your WRONG and those training towns DO and DID exist and DO EXIST TO THIS VERY DAY . . . good day to you sir . .

    the barret 50 cal wasnt made by a giant weapon company like H&K IT WAS actually made by 1 man . . and only was put into production for cia in the 90s so ya . . the very first one was used in sweden special forces in 1991 . . .and yeah . . .cia didnt get them for awhile after that . .. but anyways. .. carry on . . btw i do like you sir .. . your funny and you taught me alot . . you failed to mention the 74u being the predecesor to the modern draco . . and also many guns were altered to fit different stocks and barrelswere switched out to use drum clips . . .anyways . . carry on . .

    He’s really great. I came into this expecting some old dude who wouldn’t shut up about “Oh, well this and that isn’t realistic,” when the thing they’re talking about wouldn’t be plausible in a video game. This guy took me off guard, he seems to have an unprecedented understanding of video game balance.

    The fact that he took into account that weapon balancing in multiplayer was a probably reason why that one rifle wasn’t able to switch fire rates was impressive. I would assume the normal old geezers that attempts to critique guns in games would never actually think that misrepresentations might actually be for the game. They just think it’s game designers being lazy or trying to be Hollywood.

    But the .50cal needs to kill one bullet every time. And if I get the first 5-8 bullets off from an AK and someone shoots me with a 9mm. The 9 always wins even though I got the first shot. It's a joke. Battlefield is way more accurate.

  • @toastedgoodness2435

    @toastedgoodness2435

    @@fusionsportdaily1650 the reason that happens is because it's a game. If you got shot in the chest by a pistol to an ak, whole wearing some sort of armor, your chances of living through that are much higher against the pistols. But the developers don't want a gun they spent hours, even days or weeks developing to not be used cause it's better to use what is REALISTICALLY better. So they make pistols strong so they still see some use.

    You can very clearly tell this guy not only loves his job, but is also understanding of mistakes that people may make about guns. Too often you see a gun expert review a game and they're like "well 5.56 ballistics are very balanced into one direction made to completely bounce around any impact point on a tango target and taking them out so hitting someone more than 1 time is unrealistic" This guy understands what games are, and understands that games sometimes have to be unrealistic, and even very obviously plays games himself.

    The krig 6 is based on the first version of the Swedish Ak 5. The green colour and the fire selection having a P for semi automatic (stands for patronvis) give it away. There are also the 5.56 flashguard and the raider stock that are based on the updated version of the ak5 (ak5c).

    Well suppressing a revolver isn't impossible.. Just hard xD the only one I know of where they've done it successfully is with the nagant m1895 and that's because it has a 2 step action, the first being it presses the cylinder up close and tight against the barrel sealing the gap that usually is what makes suppressing a revolver hard. I'm sure they've come up with other ways in modern times, like the revolvers that looks just like your typical semi auto pistol but actually has a cylinder magazine on the "underbelly" of the pistol hidden by a hatch-ish mechanism, allowing it to be Supressed. It is a revolver, however not your classical one :P The 12rnds in a 6rnd cylinder however.. Jeez.. Never been much for alot of the CoD games.. The ones I've actually played are the "older" ones with a real solid story line, such as the first Black ops :P

    @@Pre.C_King yea, I am aware of that particular revolver. But it has never been in a cod where you can attach a suppressor to it as far as I’m aware. It is curious that no modern revolvers have the same mechanism to seal the cylinder gap. Probably cause they want to keep it simple.

    The more important bit about the AKs-74u with a drum: the Russians never even produced a drum in 5.45, not even for the RPK-74, and tuck to extended 45-round magazines. Cause they realized drums were cumbersome and unreliable. And speaking of the revolvers, the only modern military use of revolvers (or the most well known at least) was by the GIGN. They used both scoped and unscoped .357 magnum revolvers in their operations.

    Interesting he'd say that about the possibility of running and gunn with the Barrett .50 cal. I think even though it's a possibility, but it's a huge inefficient use of energy especially if you were to be surrounded by multiple opponents and you have to fight your way out of a kill box. Switching it out from time to time when you need to take someone further out would makes more sense, but using your side arm to take down anyone within 10 to 50 meters if they were a good enough shot with it. Anyway, awesome vid. Please bring him back for more of these kinds of vids!!!

Trust with the kind of $Billion dollar budget they have, they can employ Armory historians with Phds all over the world like this chap to advice them properly on the period correct models of weapons used in those times. But they don’t want that, hence the reason they made some not so perfect inclusion of weapons in the game.
