    A bonus episode for you! As part of the production for our AK-47 episode that launched yesterday we spent a little time talking through just a few variants and examples of the historic and iconic AK platform. Make sure to watch yesterday's episode of Loadout all about the AK-47 where we explore more of the weapon's legacy and life in pop culture and video games. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmhm3KlueJq3gNo.html

    Even another caveat, there are still milled AKs being made today, with the primary manufacture of modern, original (as in not part kits assembled in the US), good quality milled AKs being from Bulgaria by Arsenal

    I've worked with gold foil, it can be rubbed on, like one might rub silver foil on something. I believe electrolysis also works, but you should absolutely not take my word for it. There's different ways to do it, I worked with artists that made bronze statues. Some liked gold foil on some of their creations. It can come off, at least what I saw. Gold is very soft and not useful for this kind of application at all. Very impractical. Anyone wearing a gold ring will know that an unlucky bump into basically anything "hard" can turn your ring into an oval. You could even make marks on it with your nails, depending on how many karats it is. TL:DR gold is good for shiny things and electronics, bad for almost everything else.

    AK47 is much like M16, its a catch all term for weapons of a shared lineage and mechanics, all pretty much the same to the user despite their vast differences to us nerds. Heck, even what became the M4 was first called the M16 Carbine by Colt themselves.

  • @QualityPen

    @QualityPen

    Жыл бұрын

    M16 carbine makes sense. The M4 really is just a short-barreled M16. But, modern people, especially technically minded ones (myself included) are OBSESSED with categorization and classification. Same sort of deal with the AK-74M’s short barrel version being called the AK-105. We do the same thing to historical weapons now. Sidesword, arming sword, longsword, Viking sword, scimitar, saber, gladius, kopis, falcata- these were all just called “sword” (and that’s it) by the people who actually used them back in the day. Maybe “curved sword” or “two-handed sword” would have been used.

    If I am not sure I generally say an "Ar15 pattern" or "Ak variant" irl its easier to tell them apart but in games and media its not always easy. Even IMFDB guys get some wrong. There are a few "M16 carbines" and rifles like 933 which aren't m4's but aren't M16's. You also have like the air force versions and "goverment carbines". Its just safer lol. AK's pattern can be easier but without looking at it closely, could you tell a type 1 from an AKM in a game?

    The AK owes it's existence to the Garand more than the StG44. Ironically the M16 is more closely related to the StG44 than the AK.

    Unfortunately with what UK gun laws are, for good or bad, even Jonathan would probably have a tough time owning most any weapon in the Royal Armory collection privately.

    I always thought that the gold plating started from Goldeneye 007. I have friends who are into cerakote gold and 007 was there inspiration. Can you comment on what came first or if 007 took inspiration from cartels?

    I actually would argue gold plated guns have their roots in the west. Presentation firearms, and predating those presentation swords etc., were exceptionally "bling" gold plated and engraved affairs and usually gifted to military or political leaders as part of diplomacy or as part of a ceremony.

    We live in a world where Gold Damascening was already invented and some people still decided that just dipping things in gold was the best possibly way to show off that they have more money than god... Method one: Something that looks beautiful and shows off the artist's great talent and effort. Method two: Hahaha! Electrode go brr.

    Nice. Next great step would be to educate gamers about the differences between the AK74 and AKM. 100 series AKs. Yugo AKs, Polish, Chinese - they're all different. But they share one thing - they're NOT AK47s lol

    I'm sorry Jon but over one fifth off is not "a bit lighter". AKM is _still_ the second lightest service rifle with the infamous M16A1 weighing only 200 grams lighter.
