Sir, I'm currently home for exams. I won't be joining onboard for some time. I will give you a jist of normal checks. Once you join, take an inventory, and write down the accurate dates of expiry (even if the old officer had done it, do it once yourself) of all medicines. Check which manifest applies to your ship, and confirm you have every medicine, to the minimum requirements as per manifest. Check the validity of medical chest certificate. Check the Oxygen resuscitation equipment pressure and last filled date, along with spare bottle and charge. Check all First Aid box for content amd expiry. The equipment (all the instruments like scissors, scalpel, twizers etc) and mortuary bags, check if damaged, or if expiring. The call button should be working and tested. Make an inventory of controlled drugs (mostly will be with master) and tally the accuracy and requirements. The required number of Life jackets and its condition and expiry in the hospital. Cleanliness of the toilet and repair any damages found. Normally, since most of us neglect the toilet, its a big place for a good PSC to find defects. Make a requisition order ASAP, and send it to the company. Even if a check comes on the form of PSC, they will not find a fault, as the order has been already placed. Also, all medicines should be locked and key kept with officer incharge. Make an entry into MEDICAL Log everytime someone is treated, weekly inspection of accommodation and hospital sanitary check, new medicine received onboard, and details of Master and medical officers onboard. All IMO symbols have to be accurate and in good order. Also, an updated copy of MFAG to be onboard. Regards.

The Fire plan carriage in container outside accommodation is a SOLAS requirement. The rest, is my company policy. But, somewhere I had read the content required, other than from my company SMS. I had lost track of where I had read on the requirements. Will keep this post updated with a link to the file as and when I get my hand on it. Regards
