It's not random so much as a difficult thing to convey in 2 words/gameplay. Since the whole point of Roy's skills aren't to be racist, it's to be a counter to Zelguis's mindset that humans have no worth and only dragons do, i.e 'Human Virtue' does exist. But the problem is that the 'easy' way to show this is to buff humans and not dragons

The general rule of thumb I find is once a unit gets a legendary/Mythic/Emblem or a brave alt, that units gimmick is now set(which ever alt comes later). So take Camilla for example, she was gimmickless for a while, but now with legendary Camilla, she will always have some form of Spoil Rotten. Roy will always be racist, and Eliwood will always be a support unit if a dragon is around.

Pretty much. Sucks for those specific cases who have many alts but no those important ones, like Tharja, the queen of shitty inheritables. Though, her one gimmick seems to be having a kind of rein effect in her few pref weapons she has, namely her OG, Bridal, Rhajat and Kiria.

I still find it so funny to this day that every Leif alt has S Drink

​@TNinja0 it's mostly a reference to Thracia's fatigue mechanic. S(tamina) Drink recovers fatigue. It was also nice because it let Leif score in a higher bin with a rare prf B-Slot in Arena

4 of Marth’s alts have a special that boosts all allies stats when it activates.

Fallen dimitri also has true damage based on his atk if he cannot follow up, so the trend works Also, tana seems to have ally warping as a mechanic, young could teleport to a space within 2 spaces of an ally within 2 spaces, rearmed has guidence 4 Summer has guidence 3 with a health condition Flame tribe and normal tana seem to break the trend

I like units with lore relevant gimmicks, like Chloe caring about being near support pairs

Gimmicks like these have it hard for me to be excited for alts when they are just Gimmick but better!

That is in part due to (+ radiant/great) aether being such a high cooldown to begin with and a good chunk of his alts were during the rein of special spammers. I imagine in a world where gambit was released before special spiral (or even a simpler effect) Ike would have leaned into that instead of acceleration.

I like Embla's gimmick of closing the enemies off from each other lol And I do like Edel being a galeforce bot. Roy being racist was the only funny one I can think of.

I honestly cannot stand the “This is the same unit in a funny costume” set-up, it’s more fun when units have some variety (I.e Laevatein has been a staff/mage/axe/ with cav/flying respectively, or when even Lyn has some variety). Units like the 3H lords (ALL of them, I hate Edelgard the most but I’m getting equally sick of Dimitri and I LIKE his character), Micaiah, and the Corrins (almost each alt is just their dragon form now, I miss when we had fun stuff like bow M!Corrin and mage Corrins, also Yato when???) are beginning to feel incredibly stale. I don’t mind minor gimmicks like Specials, but weapons/movement type units need to switch it up. And maybe DON’T put the Legendary PRF skill in EVERY seasonal, it makes for poor fodder.

Every Rhea must be a dragon with Dragon Wall (sometimes an improved Dragon Wall), every Eliwood must support dragons and beasts And now, every Corrin must be a dragon too, with some sort of defensive capability It kinda bugs me that every unit must be placed into a certain box, when some creativity could allow different weapons or skills but still do similar stuff if they must Like what if Legendary male Corrin was a staff user? Hoshido Nobles can use staffs/rods too, and they could still let him set up the water terrain or whatever He could even transform into a dragon for his special animation kinda like how the Byleths whip out the sword for theirs, it'd be the opposite here

I immediately thought of Lilina and AoE specials, iirc the only alt of hers that doesn't have one in her base kit is Summer

I do enjoy that certain characters are getting an identity in-game. Roy's a racist. Edelgard is zooming. Then again, how many evil wizards are going to get turned into red tome infantry with a status gimmick?

Bernadetta and the 1 damage or being under %100 HP

It’s still crazy to think that Altina, a character from Tellius who only appeared in a lore based flash back screenshot ONCE, got so popular in FEH that she now has like 4-5 alts like what.

Since Leif and Gullveig share the same gimmick we can assume that Gullveig is actually Leif

The Hector DC thing was kinda funny and strange because he did not really have canon DC, while multiple others had literal canon DC weapons without DC in heroes. And also some heroes who used DC skills in canon, like the death knight but that was more of an boss thing in his case

1:55 Hrid came out a year before Nailah. Winter 2018. He had DC in his base kit. I would argue Nailah's gimmick is Glare, her prf gravity C-slot that represents a skill she had in Radiant Dawn by the same name. Though it would be more accurate if it was a turn-action-denial skill rather than gravity.

I think they put various versions of desperation on Lysithea except for her base

An important distinction between Chrom and Lucina's PRF assists: Chrom's is essentially "Reposition + self-refresh", while Lucina's is "Swap + self-refresh". Also, I can't speak for Chrom since I don't use all of his alts, but Lucina's gimmick is only present from Legendary onwards. Like Camilla, she had a case of alt spam early in the game, so Base, Masked Marth, Spring and Brave don't feature her gimmick at all. It's a weird case where only about half her alts even feature her gimmick at all.

My Favourite FEH Gimmick is male OC´s never getting either released or an alt in like 5 years.. or just stuck in alt hell for a decade

Marth's gimmick (except his bridal/groom alt) has always been as a stat stacking support unit. Base Marth has a really outdated refine which just is basically spur all stats+2. Brave, young, winter, and legendary Marth when he triggers his prf special just gives you free stats and sometimes free bonus doubler. And also Emblem Marth too

I think the part that annoys me about Lyon’s young and fallen alts is that they don’t get full colorless advantage, it’s only against ranged colorless for some reason

Reinhardt has always been associated with brave weapons. Even his rearmed alt, which lacks the effect in the weapon itself, has it in his preference skill.

I doubt this, but I'm vibing with the Apollo Justice music. Hope one day you'll cover another series other than Fire Emblem as much as I like the series.

I think you could make the case that Byleths gimmick is NFU, or at least it used to be. It doesn’t really stand out anymore because it’s very common, but back in 2019/2020 NFU was much rarer, and they all had it built in. Summer Byleth was a ranged flier which was especially rare for NFU, and Legendary M!Byleth gave it out as a drive. Lately they’ve somewhat abandoned it though, and Byleth is more defined by Sublime Heaven DR Piercing or Divine Pulse vantage.

Locking characters to a certain gimmick or same weapon+movement type makes newer alts of them so boring in my opinion compared to others, I wanna see diversity in their abilities while maybe still keeping a hint if their old gimmicks/power

There are also some gimmicks that faded out with the meta of course, like some tried the omnibreaker route, but that does not work post null follow up personal skills are of course an easy way to give an Hero an gimmick if the skill does translate well to an certain style in heroes

I love that they looked at how good wing spear was in shadow dragon and eventually decided she should be effective against half the game.

I think characters like Lyn and Camilla don't get a Gimmick because they sell anyways. The character itself is the selling point, while gimmicks like DC for Hector is what IS is using to sell.

I feel like throwing a table against the wall whenever a unit has anything with "support partner" in their prf skill.

I like how Camilla's gimmick is just flight. It's unbelievably simple and allows her to remain diverse lol.

Chrom, Lucina and their "change the future" gimmicks. 😂

You know, this give me a curious question that I wanna hear from everyone here: If you could create a new gimmick in FEH, what would yours be? I originally started with inverse Blade-tome (More debuffs = More Attack), but at the rate we're at, might as well add True Damage reduction on top of that, including brave hits.

I really wish that they would release a Hector alt which is player phase focused. I am tired of seeing only armored Hector alts which are for the most part working the same.

I feel like this video frames this as a problem, though I've never seen it as one. In fact, that's one of my favorite parts of FEH. These gimmicks give certain units an identity in terms of gameplay (separate from their original games usually, but sometimes referencing those appearances). Maybe it's not always the flashiest or can be seen as kinda bog standard, but regardless I really like seeing what twist on the usual game plan they put on these units. Chrom, Lucina and the Robins are probably my favorite examples of this.

Some of Caeda's crazier effective spreads are a nod to FE Warriors where due to her having Calvary qnd armored effectiveness in one weapon trait, she could add two more without issue

I love thinking about these gimmicks and have thought about it as soon as I started noticing patterns with their alts. Some that weren't brought up: Marth: stat support Ike: special charge Eliwood: Dragon cooperation Roy: Hates dragons Lilina: AoE

For some reason Tana + guidance/warping was my first thought seeing the title

So many gimmick units but only edelgard's winter version is very unique, with the flame terrain making it seem like it's the endgame of crimson flower.

I did wanted to be taken into a 1000+ units gimmicks lol

New ike comes up against spear unit spear thinks he’s going to win after all he’s got the weapon triangle advantage ike goes guess what my puny sword kicks your spear arss and guess what the wepeon triangle take goes out the window we now have a green magic unit which kicks sword units 90% of the time.

i’m an edelgard fan who wants more diversity in her alts. cyl was the chance for that but they decided to be extremely safe and boring there. i guess we’ll see with hopes edelgard since she didn’t have aymr in that game’s story. i also wonder what a mage edelgard would be like since we already have gullveig lol.

It seems they’re trying to make dragon veins into trends associated with particular units, whilst B Corrin got stone, Lumera now has it on 2 alts (I actually like Lumera but why the heck is there three of her already?) so I think they want stone to become her thing. But I could be reaching.

We need more citrinne in the game with her gimmick

Its funny because sometimes the role they have in Heroes doesn't even fit the game they're from. Roy's whole thing is that he wants to bring peace to dragons and Idunn. And there are no Manakete's in Blazing Sword, as Ninian and Nils are refresh units, so there are no dragons for Eliwood to support, so we don't even get a big "pro dragon" perspective from him either aside from him sleeping with one. Some roles fit the characters personalities rather than their original playstyle (which again, Roy and Eliwood don't) Soren and Robin are tacticians so they have a skill dedicated to debuffing the enemy forces. Camilla is sadistic and intimidating (in story, she's always been pretty mid as a unit and boss in fates) so she increases damage to the enemies. Marth's friends are his power and he gets stronger when they're empowered. Ike's whole gameplan is to face tank literally everything because Ragnell has distant counter and his stats are insane, and if the enemy is fool enough to come close he can (and likely will) proc Aether. Eirika has the Lunar Brace and Eph has the Solar Brace, so impliment Luna and Sol into their kits. Lucina and Chrom are inspired by their ancestor Marth, so they also focus on supporting units, and they refresh themselves because galeforce strats. Its a neat concept but it also is kinda lazy, because thats all these units ever are now.

I honestly miss "true gimmick" units, it gave identity to various members in a huge cast. But this is in part due to the homogeneous nature the game direction took and the death of team roles (OG mage/dragon killers - fir/ niles. Or choke point ranged units - silque/Sophia). Now the game expects every unit to do everything.

Ephraim has lots of gimmicks tbh, like letting the enemy attack first or brave hits recently.

For a franchise the promotes unit customization (sometimes to the point of it breaking the game looking at you Awakening and 3 houses) so much it will always be strange to me how boring and static every alt is.

Seliph and Sigurd's gimmicks were anti-mage. Sigurd came with that weird ward skill that reduced damage, and Seliph Refine got miracle against magic, was it?

I disagree that winter tharja was generic. She had a generic weapon, but close counter was so rare at that point and she introduced vengeful fighter which at the time was insane. To some extent, she was one of the first fallen edelgard type polarising units.

As someone who runs Marth Emblem, I completely forgot that he had a gimmick. I rely on his Vantage too, so I use it a lot. The day they drop a "negates dragon effectiveness" seal will be the day my team dies
