Fire Academy Week 2
In academy week two, recruits work on SCBA and search & rescue skills. The Recruit Training Officers (RTOs) take them through confined spaces in the drill ground maze and put them through a drill to piece SCBAs back together with blinds on. The SMFR Strength & Conditioning coaches also put the recruits through their first early morning PT pool workout.

the funding at this academy is insane. my academy in texas had enough money to get us a helmet, half of an scba, we got to look at pictures of an axe, and we have only heard stories of hoods. hahaha joking btw

I am a military firefighter from Brazil, Brasilia, the training carried out is identical to ours, the only exception and the time, was 12 months of course, it seems that in humid states it is 5 weeks, but ours involved a lot of physical interaction. I am impressed with the military education, I thought I was not militarized.

Are you a firefighter now
Hello :3 im currently 11 years old i know how to deal with medical problems that appear out of no where so now this is teaching me how to evacuate people if fire hits in a place like a community centre Edit: And i also want to be a firefighter or a lifeguard but mostly a firefighter
Ive been swimming for a while so that part might be a little easier for me. But its all about the team.
I live pretty close to them, how cool
I love u all and I want to be cop you guys make fire academy look like a family reunion vs police academy being a domestic disturbance

What GoPro session clip do you guys use on the radio straps ?
I enjoy going swimming on windy days because no one else is there. Apparently not many people can handle the bone chilling cold of getting out of a pool and into a gust of wind on an already mildly chilly day.
Anyone else shake their hips when the recruits pass alarms went off
They are quite fit 😂😂
Is swimming a normal requisite in most academies or is this a exception? I know every place is different but just trying to get a idea
their drill grounds could fit three of my academy and have room to spare
I'm about to start the academy in 5 days.. do your recruiters have to get there own gear?
Whoo hoooo....2nd week SMFR.
do the members of the academy use older radios to communicate with each other on the fire ground
Yes a safety jump needed for both rescuers and victims and water flush
Can any of you tell me what training is like and what to expect
Is this for people who go into firefighting as a career with pay or volunteers also have to do this too?
Do they get to go home during the weekends?

@@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Thanks, it arrived today, the mailmen apologized for losing it. Thank you once again, the patch is probably my favorite in the collection.
What's really fun for training is waiting for it to get dark outside, kill all the lights in our shed, smoke it out, and go and try to find a victim with a few different variables, like stuff in the way, flashlight or no flashlight, tic or no tic. Really messes with your head when you cant use a light.
I'm in an Academy now. I'm extremely jealous how south metro runs their Academy. My Academy is extremely underfunded compared to this. The training and PT far surpass my Academy as well..

Quick question so I'm wildland firefighter thinking about becoming structural. I have ADHD so I worry alot but the question is do the fire academy teaches you the basic of how to swim? or do they expect you to already know how?
@TheMrASSTASTIC
3 жыл бұрын
@@youngforeverlastingyfl1832 depends on the Academy and where your department that you will work for is located and what certs they want you to have. Depends on the environment you live in. Ex: If you have a lot of lakes/rivers where you live or a lake by your station. They may want you to get your swift water rescue or diving certs. We haven't touched on that in my Academy.
@TheMrASSTASTIC
3 жыл бұрын
@@youngforeverlastingyfl1832 The Academy I'm going through gets you your Fire 1 and 2, HAZMAT awareness and operations certs. As well FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 certs. I have my EMT but most departments around my surrounding counties won't look at you without your AEMT. A prerequisite for my Academy was a general knowledge test in reading, comprehension, math and English, first aid cert and CPR cert. The rest is up to us regarding commitment, drive and courage. I saw a lot of men turn to screaming school girls in confined space training. The CPAT and a few other assignments like pre incident surveys, fire prevention class that you teach, projects, prevention survey, and a UFRA loss report need to be done. If you have commitment, which as a bush stomper you defiantly should have. It'll be a cake walk for you. Structure and wildland are needed all over. A transition for you should be relatively easy bro.

I live in the South Metro area and actually drive by at least two stations to get to school every day 😆. I’m currently in 11th grade and I’m 16, and becoming a firefighter has been a dream of mine for ages. Just curious as to what you need to become a firefighter, and if it’s possible for me in the future. (I am an American citizen and physically fit). Does becoming a firefighter require any degrees or special training prior to applying at the station?
@ajavila893

Da Golden Chiken every department is different with their requirements but a lot of departments require EMT-B and fire fighter 1/2. If you can volunteer for a department they’ll typically reimburse you after a certain amount of time volunteering so you can get those certs. Some departments have resident programs and they’ll pay and put you through all the classes you need. Hope this helped

In Massachusetts I had to get my emt-b and then I applied to my local fire department. They are currently sponsoring me through the fire Academy so I dont pay for it. When I complete the course I will be on call with this fire department. My advice is to go to your local fire department and ask to speak with the chief or depty chief and they will tell you exactly what you have to do. Generally firefighters are really friendly and helpful people so dont be shy. Hope this helps and good luck.

Generally you have to be a us citizen to join a fire department. I haven't heard of a fire department that takes in to account height/weight limits. Of course if you are over weight and cannot pass the agility tests then that applies. 18 years of age to test, not sure what they hire at but most likely 18.
