It was the heroes of Finland that saved Scandinavia from falling to Bolsheviks. My family fought alongside Finnish soldiers as volunteers, in a SS division of Swedish volunteers. The government of Sweden remained neutral, but I'm proud that my family fought for the right side, to defend Europe! Finnish, Germans and Swedish volunteers risked their lived to keep Scandinavia and the baltics free from communists, and today they're not given the credit they are owed for their bravery and heroism

From 2:45 onwards, Ilmari Juutilainen, World’s best non-german ace: 94 confirmed kills, with mainly Brewsters (older plane model, that US discarded as junk and sold to Finland) and Bf 109.

It will take too long to describe the Finnish Brewster but basically it was a different Brewster, more powerful engine, the Wright R-1820-G5, producing 950 hp (single row therefore lighter) and de-navalized and omitted armor giving a better power to weight ratio and giving much better manoeuvrability! It was quite popular with the Finnish pilots and mechanics, not bad for the "peanut special....

Never mind the magnificent 109, the Finnish air force turned the much derided Brewster buffalo into a killing machine! Pound for pound one is the most lethal air force of ww2.

That's right, the old Finnish Airforce insignia is from Swedish count Erich von Rosen's personal symbol of luck. He donated the first aircraft to the FAF in 1918, and thus the Finnish Airforce was born. This symbol had nothing whatsoever to do with Hitler. For obvious reasons, after WWII it was changed to the now-present blue-white roundel.

@@nisse7399 It will not go from the Mannerheim Cross, since no new ones are issued. The last knight of the order, Tuomas Gerdt, got a state burial yesterday. Flags were flying at half-staff throughout the country. May he rest in peace.

It's pilot Lampi (8:20) who later wrote in his recollection book that during summer of 1944 more than 10 pilots of his squadron mentally broke so much that they were sent to "field duties". This is what it is when some 10-15 aircraft were sent to against 500 Soviet aircraft (of which some 200 were fighters like La-5, Yak-9, Airacobra)

In WWII the Finnish Air Force dropped (aircraft - aircraft battle) 1,600 enemy planes, and 182 own losses.

Im reading the "Iskulaivue" (Strikesquadron") by Timo Soiri, and I DO remember what was the hurry with Karhila and Ruotsila. ... They kind of escaped the Curtiss sqd. with the help of the MT sqd lead and firends. Not excatly by proper means. And when their sqd learder would call after them: " no point in stopping now, as the type training is already so far."

Can someone who speaks Finnish please tell me if the Swedish subtitles are wrong? They say that Hans Wind was in a Bell 39 Airacobra when shot up. It must be the other way around that he was shot down by a Soviet Airacobra. Otherwise it would be interesting to see an Airacobra in Finnish national markings. Paljon Kiitos for the uppload! Yes, he describes how the aircobra got two hits, meaning two hits on his plane but apparently translator didn't pay attention.

He was hit by a Soviet Airacobra. Finnish AF used a number of captured Soviet aircraft, including fighters in the early stages of the war, but they did not fly the Airacobra.

Se on vähän sama asia kuin murtumispiste. Se on tulee jokaisella vastaan jossain vaiheessa. Toisilla ennemmin, toisilla myöhemmin. 20€ lentotikku (tai 200€ hotas jos on varaa) kaupasta ja kympillä saa todella hienon simulaattorin Steamistä ( IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, simussa valitse forgotten battles, winter war ) ja niinkuin veteraani totesi niin mersussa on yksi huono puoli, mikä on myös mallinnettu tuossa simussa. Pitää olla rauhallinen sen kaasun käytössä kun rullaa tai on lentoon lähdössä. :)

Siinä on myöski kapeet laskutelineet ja "muutaman" kerran onnistunu kippaamaan koko vehkeen sillee että siiven kärki lähti kävelee. Sen peräpyörän saa lukitua suoraan, nii vähä helpompi nousta sen kanssa sillo. Ja niihi Gustaveihi ainaki sai vielä siipien alle pari 20mm lisää tai vaihtoehtoisesti 30mm kanuunan ja niillä tippuu kaikki alas yhellä pienellä liipasimenvedolla.
