🇫🇮 Finland Eurovision 2024 Reaction | Windows95man - No Rules

Ойын-сауық

We react to "No Rules" - the Windows95man song that Finland will send to Eurovision 2024. Party DJ Teemu Keisteri and singer Henri Piispanen won the public vote to win Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2024 (despite finishing last in the jury vote). We discuss the UMK 2024 results, their chances of qualifying from the semi-final and more in our analysis and reaction.

Actually, the song is not bad at all, the vocal performance is very good, but the staging may have seemed a little absurd to people, we should not be surprised here, because this is Finland, a country that loves fun and doing different things, and it adds color to Eurovision, they say there are no rules anyway.

I can understand why people think this is a joke entry, I did too when I first heard it. BUT, when listening few times the lyrics actually have a lot of meaning behind, which also explains all the crazy in the stage: There is no rules to be yourself, even if there is a lot of critics from others. Since ballads are more common we tend to want to know what's the heartbreak about, and that's why everyone were so captivated with the Sara Siipola's song. It's absolutely great, I love the song and it's so freaking relatable. Her live performance wasn't clean enough for me though. It is a hard song to sing and for a ballad to succeed in a Euro stage, it has to be pitch perfect. Still love Sara, but Windows95man just won everyone over with clean sing and funny perfomance. Will it win Eurovision? Maybe, though most likely not. But we love it!

For ppl complaining "this is making Eurovision look like a joke, it was startingto feel like serious competition in recent years but now Finland sends thus " I have to say are are you serious? 😂 Every year there have been utterly ridiculous songs like this, EVERY year. And the whole point of Eurovision is that it accepts all kinds of performances. I mean heck last year Käärijä's success came out of nowhere even for us Finns. If some of you ppl out there think we Finns somehow plan how to get better and better contestants to UMK or only certain type if performances, thats not how it works. This year It was what it was, to me and most Finns it did felt like the only really memorable performance from UMK was W95man and thats why we voted them to Eurovision.

Yes, I agree! It's not like we are saying that this is what everyone should be sending. This is only what we liked the most out of our 7 options this year. In a way I am flattered that people suddenly care about Finland's success so much, but there is no need to feel personally insulted because of our choice. And it is not even like we are sending something deliberately bad in order to just be trolling the competition. I can only speak for myself of course, but I DO REALLY LIKE THIS. It's not like I think it is what other people around Europe would like. Could people now just get it, that we are not trying to please others, but send the one we like and would want to see on stage. Why can other countries send joke entries, but when Finland send something fun, it's insulting and taking the whole competition down. Please do not start sending only this kind of music, I don't want the competition to be all about that, but surely there must be place for this one fun act this year?

  • @johannac5653

Exactly! Why the heck should it be a serious song? There are plenty of serious songs in the competition already to watch and listen to. There must be a specific kind of bubble where people imagine Eurovision is a serious event for serious songs only, because in my bubble (millennials + younger) everyone wants the fun, energetic party songs. Ballads are an automatic toilet break, and I say that as a person who does like all kinds of songs including the slower ones, so I get a bit upset sometimes because so many people automatically skip ballads hahaha. Yes, if people want mainstream and serious they can turn on a radio or watch a music award show. I don't understand the need to make everything mainstream or serious, can't we have anything that is fun? And it's even worse when people's reason is that others won't respect eurovision, eventhough those people won't be watching so I don't understand the need to have everything validated in the eyes of the rest of the public. Eurovision should be about what you enjoy/what makews you feel something, not sterile and "technically clean" music.

OMG! Love how this song divides people the same way Käärijä did last year! Have you forgotten what horrible, terrible, grotesque song and awful “singing” with weird outfit and staging? And now for Windows95man the same!Maybe it’s a good sign?! It’s not a joke entry, Per Se, it’s fun entry with deeper meaning lyrics: Call me what you may, see if I care, see me slay! Is there something wrong with the way I look? Is there something wrong with who I am? If I'm not alright, tell me why do I Feel so beautiful tonight? No rules! It's how I live How I find the wind beneath my wings It's how I learn to fly! It’s an anthem for being who you are 🌈🎉🎊 Love the message and also how it combines the Finnish mythodology Kalevala where the world is created from the goldeneye’s’ egg. In the stage performance the singer Henri represents the bird (see the similarity of the movements and the clothing) and the Windows95man is born (as all humans) naked only wearing Kalevala inspired boots, cap and t-shirt. The stage coordinator tries in the middle of the song give the rules to our hero but he puts the instructions flying in the air. He wants to be free and who he is despite what the others try him to be! He looks for his jeans shorts that is delivered from the heaven and he starts the party with the fireworks because of it! It’s happy and fun feeling! Cheer up! ❤ About Sara Siipola (I was voting for her) and Finnish ballads in ESC: we have tried too many times to send good ballads. All the juries just give us 0 points for the those. Latest 2017 with Norma Jean “Blackbird” that was really robbed and didn’t even qualify from the semifinals thanks to the juries😢 Please check Finnish ESC history and you’ll see that only different rock and out-of-the-box gives us results. And only basically by people’s votes - never juries. So people of Finland just decided “Screw the establishment juries - we send what we like and what represents us - funny and goofy people with metal head mind - we don’t care what the others think!”🎉 But let’s have fun and enjoy life🎉 We deserve it🎊 It’s going to be great ESC spring💃🕺 And respect the others and no to bullying ❤

"No Rules" is not a musically bad song. It's fun and catchy and the stage show is art. Weird camp entries are what makes Eurovision iconic. Like which Eurovision entries do you remember first? Verka dancing around with 69 emblazoned on her back, or Sana Neilson standing and singing "Undo"? Be honest. Windows95man won't ruin Eurovision any more than Let 3 did last year, or Zdob si Zdup before that, or Subwolfer before that. These silly fun acts that get blanked with the juries and come top 5 in the televote are what makes this contest one of the best out there. If you want "classy" ballads all day, go watch the voice

I don't see it as trashy and awful joke entry. I see it as highly energetic and fun party banger, as I think Windows95man himself has meant it to be. And I love that kind of music, I'm sorry (not) but I really do. Saying that there is no place for that kind of music in Eurovision goes a bit far in my opinion. As well could someone be saying that you may not send rock music, because that ruins the whole competition. This kind of "party music" is actually quite popular in Finland, so it is not very unusual either. So we will be sending a fun song many of us truly like, enjoy the joy it brings and will not care about what others think.

I find it funny, how so many says "this is from 80's or its from 2007" or what ever. There is 95 in his name! This music is from the 90s. :D Director of communications Microsoft Finland sayd, that they got no problem on using name Windows95man. He also said well "Windows 95 is cultural history. You can treat it like old memories. The artist communicates the retro ethos of the 90s and does it really fun. It is a product that has been pitted for quite a long time. If a car from the 50s was driven in a stage show, would they ask Ford if it could be there. A car from the 50s is a part of that era and a symbol of the era - in the same way that Windows 95 is a symbol of the 90s, he reasons."

The stage coordinator tries in the middle of the song give the rules to our hero but he puts the instructions flying in the air. I find the comments disheartening for the idea that music can't just be fun. Most people I know found the original video closer to cringy than fun, but the live performance had everyone in the room laughing. Stylistically it was perfectly fine 90's eurodance. One of the comments said that this type of music devalued ESC in the past, but I remember when it was the Serious Music tm that was what was holding ESC back. What is the beauty of ESC is the way all music is welcomed. UMK has value as a platform locally to artists which is why it has good entries. We vote on the performance of the day, like most people do for ESC as well. Fun is just as valid emotion as anything else.

Sara was my favorite, but unfortunately the melody and singing was not as perfect in live as in the UMK video - how it sounded in the video was perfection, perhaps sound in there was too much mastered for ESC standards? Paskana live act was disappointment for me, but I really love the song and it will be on my play lists always. When we heard Windows95man's song (and saw the video) 1st time I said to my teenagers that this a banger, even though I did not like the video... it was too much for me and all over. Henri can sing and song has 90's beat. Teenagers just were rolling their eyes to me... 😂🙄 Now they agree that it's a banger, alhough think that the live show was quite embarrashing/weird. Even though I did not like the video, the UMK show was upgrade and pure fun. 🎉

This certainly isn't my favourite genre being very traditional 90's eurodance BUT I do recognize it has a very catchy melody that sticks with you. After watching the Saturday live performances I wasn't surprised at all that they won the audience as it really was the performance that made a huge impact on people. And it made a huge impact on me as well and got my vote even though I might like some of the other songs as such better. What you need to know is that W95M is a contemporary artist, quite a well known in Finland with his own gallery (uses different artist name on that and W95M is his DJ alias). I see this performance as a piece of art to channel his musical artistry which is the love for 90´s music, vibes etc. You might not like that type of art that this music represents but I must give to him that he does it 100% in that genre.

Sara had a great studio song but the show wasn't that good. I guess she was so nervous it affected her voice. For decades we sent our best singers and songs to Europe and we got laughed at. Europe hated our language, our songs and our artists. Nobody noticed us until we said f-it and sent Lordi. And then we sent the biggest middle finger show ever, and we shot into the finals once again. And Käärijä was also one of those up yours acts and all of Europe loves him even though he doesn't sing like at all. So Windows95man is not a show that we just love, it is a show that shows us. We are rebels. We are not going to conform and try to be anything else than what we are. We are not like all of Europe. We are Finns. We fight. We stand up straight. And we sent the first punk band made by disabled men and their original song to Eurovision and we are not ashamed, like the whole Europe was. We stand with our people. All our people. And sometimes we stand naked. Who cares? We don't.

I really liked Paskana and Sara Siipola, but I respect 'Vox populi' and the Finnish tradition to respond to trashy, silly humour and support the underdog. People refer to fun and 90s references when supporting this song. The tune is decent and the vocals are good. It may be that they can keep their name: EBU has not commented Windows95man name to this point. Now as a Finn I have to see how cringey the staging will be. If it will be fun, though, I will be for it.
