Finite Element Analysis Via A Smart Phone, December 16th, 2013.

Ғылым және технология

The video shows how to carry out a finite element analysis of a beam structure using a Moto G smart phone. The computer programs must be DOS programs, & analysis is aided by "dosbox turbo" . The author has also successfully analysed a 124 element vibration of a rigid-jointed space frame; this was a 4 dimensional problem. The author believes that eventually, smart phones will be capable to handle large commercial computer packages. N.B. The Beam is simply-supported at Nodes 1 & 3, & NOT at Node 4!

I have downloaded about 50 of my compiled, DOS-based, QuickBasic finite element computer programs of "yesteryear", on to my Moto g Smartphone. To do these, I had to purchase an Android App called "DosBox Turbo"; it cost me less than £2-50. When operating "DosBox Turbo" , I obtained a "C" prompt command on my SmartPhone screen, and to use this command, I had to activate a "QWERTY" keyboard from just above the "C" prompt command. The programs that I have on my Smartphone include those that can carry out the static, dynamic and stability analyses of trusses, frames and shells. Good agreement between experiment and theory was obtained for those structures that obeyed small deflection elastic theory, and for plastic collapse, plastic knockdown factors had to be incorporated. Let me also state that most of the DOS based computer programs of "yesteryear" usually only occupied a "few" kilobytes, and it must be remembered that 1 Gigabyte=1 million Kilobytes!

Many of my above-mentioned computer programs, appear as .EXE files on my website, and can be downloaded FREE-OF-CHARGE, from my website. Some of the computer programs are in Visual Basic, and are compiled as .EXE files. These latter computer programs can be run on most versions of Windows, including Windows 7 and Windows 8, but NOT on DOS! To access my website, just Google "carl ross", and choose the "homepage" link. When my main web page appears, choose the "Finite Elements & Computers" and "Collapse of Submarines" links, and look for the links to the two sets of FREE DOS, compiled QuickBasic computer programs, that can be run on most Android Smartphones, in DOS. Good luck!

Still Innovating Carl...out of interest what type of mesh were you using and did the calculations come up with the same answer as hand calcs and a more regular commercial program

Most of the programs were on the small-deflection, static, dynamic & stability analyses on trusses, frames and shells; meshing was not a problem on these structures. Thank you for your valuable contribution and best regards.

The programs are in a folder or directory called "qb45"; thus to access the programs, we have to type "cd qb45"; when we are in the "C Prompt" mode. Hence if we type "cd qb45"; when in the "C Prompt" mode, we can access all the computer programs.
