Finished Building a quiet generator shed, part 3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I’m building a whole house quiet generator shed. Many years ago, I attempted to make a generator run more quietly. While it wasn’t a total failure, I didn’t get the results I was hoping for. Since then I’ve rethought the avenue I pursued in order to achieve sound suppression while the whole house generator is running. I am certain that I can’t eliminate all the noise, but this generator shed should make a huge difference.

Hi BC and Charly! What a difference, really quite compared to being open. Surprisingly quieter than I expected since it doesn’t have any insulation in it. Nice job. Tip on caulking, take painters tape and put it down however far away you need it and you can do that on both sides of the seam your trying to seal. When dry just pull tape up and you have a clean line of caulking. Have a blessed day and be safe!

Great video, thanks for showing everything. Always keep a carbon monoxide detector in your house, and when you can, it is a good idea to locate your generator farther from your house, even though it is very convenient to have it close. I have an older house, so not all the cracks and joints are sealed as well as a more modern place. I can absolutely confirm that a few times when running our generator in the winter, depending on the wind, exhaust fumes would be drawn into the house. It's probably because as warm air in the heated house escaped through the roof, it drew in makeup air from outside, and in my case, from my generator exhaust.

Glad it turned out well. Especially that you are pleased about the sound being muffled. Not as much of a concern here because my closest neighbor is over a 1/2 mile away. Several miles away from the backside of my house, where the generator is the loudest. If memory serves there are a lot of folks on the street to your house. On another note, do you have a service panel on the outside of your home, where power comes in to your meter? I do. That's where my 50 amp breaker is installed for the generator. Had to install an interlock switch. Illegal here to run a generator without one. Plus, I don't want to lose my insurance coverage if something goes wrong. Since I have an old Square D panel, it took a while for me to find one that would fit. Found the Generator Interlock Kit at a place called GenInterlock. I'm puzzled? The generator is bonded to the frame for the GFCI outlets. Electric service panel is connected to a ground rod. Why do you need a ground rod at the generator? If I understand correctly, when I'm connected to the house, the 120v receptacles on the WGen 9500DF won't work because they are, in essence, grounded twice (frame & house). My brother hasn't mentioned the need for a grounding rod. If I need one, want to get it before he physically connects the generator to the house. He's planning to wrap up everything this coming week. FWIW... I know just enough about electricity to wire a lamp, at best. So my "puzzled" may be straight from left field. Hope you didn't hurt your back with all that lifting, pushing, etc. Hope you had your friend Pat (for example) to lend a hand. Hope too, that lumber prices have come down in your area. Heard that they have around here. God bless.

Back is fine. My wife grabbed one end of the generator (the lighter end) I grabbed the other, and we lifted it into the shed. I won’t be using an interlock. I will be writing Simone step by step instructions on the panel door. My outside service panel is much further away and I couldn’t afford the wire for that distance.

@BCtruck, BC Blades - Good job, Brad. If you want it quieter, you can always add pink or white solid foam insulation to the walls and the roof. For the floor, you can add cheap; Harbor Freight/Home Depot/Lowes/Menards, interlocking black foam floor mats. For more expensive, you can add; Tractor Supply/Rural King/Farm Supply horse stall mats to the floor.

Caulking trick for those that can't lay a bead of caulk, Use painters tape. Place the painters tape about 1/4 inch from the area that needs to be caulked. Then caulk the area and wipe it smooth and after it dries a bit, pull the painters tape and you will be left with a perfect crisp caulk line.

I wonder, to cut the sound even more. If you got some acoustical baffling foam and put on the walls-n-ceiling if that would cut the decibels even more. The stuff isn't expensive and you don't have to cover the walls completely. Or that's what Hubby did when he set up the sound system in the living room. Don't know all the parameters to that but it was very effective.

Tape it off just outside the caulk, and use krylon for plastic (matte black or white) and paint the grille and all. I did that on a sloppy caulk job on my camper and it looks way better. The tape makes a clean line and the matte black looks way better than white at least it did on my camper.

Actually the ground rod is not really needed since you’re bringing 4 wires from your electrical panel. 2 hots, a neutral, and a equipment ground. The 4th wire coming from your electrical panel will automatically bond it to the frame of the generator when it is plugged in. If your generator is your sole source of power without any grid connection at all, then the ground rod is needed in that case (i.e. off grid cabin, tiny home, etc.).

Little concerned about all the exhaust pointed right at your AC unit. Granted, it has filters, but best case scenario, it'd shorten the effective lifespan of the filters for your AC unit, right? I know it might not make so much of a difference that it probably just doesn't matter to you, but for me, every penny counts. Lol But I also wonder if the filters in the AC unit are tight knit enough stop the fumes from getting past. It's been a year, so I'm presuming it's fine. But still, different AC units, different filters, even if it's fine for you, I wouldn't recommend EVERYONE do this to all their AC units. :/

  • @bctruck
