Fingerpicking For Beginners Lessons are free.
After the 4th lesson, we are going to take the easy chords we learned and and slowly move towards learning a song.
Here's more about the course:
This Lesson 1 features a basic finger picking guitar pattern broken down from in sections to make it easily understandable. acousticguitarvideos.com rates this the top and easiest to understand fingerpicking for beginners guitar lessons on the internet.
The right hand picking involved is a basic finger picking pattern that is used in many many popular song. Learning this beginner guitar lesson is the first step to learn how to play the acoustic guitar the correct way.
Beginner Fingerstyle Guitar or Fingerpicking (or sometimes referred to as fingerstyle) guitar might seem a bit confusing when you first try it but, , fingerstyle guitar playing will become second nature with just a little repetition (practice)!
A correct fingerpicking hand position (right hand) will use your thumb, index, and middle fingers for picking. In this particular beginner fingerstyle guitar lesson, your thumb will pluck the 4th (D) string and the 3rd (G) string. Your index finger will pluck the 2nd (B) string. Your middle finger will pluck the 1st (E) string.
In general and depending on what chord you are playing, different strings will be plucked. But in this particular guitar lesson, we feature a two fingered D type of chord (left hand) which is very easy to play for a first time beginner on the guitar. Sometimes your fingers may pluck or "hit" other strings with your right hand, but try to stick to the easy beginner fingerstyle guitar lesson that is featured in the video.
I have looked at 25 other beginner fingerstyle guitar lessons and honestly, this one is a lot easier. Just watch the video and play your guitar along with this basic lesson (great to practice with). You will find that learning the guitar is very easy if you take it in small sections and don't get overwhelmed by trying to do more. After you are finished with this lesson 1 of Fingerpicking For Beginners, you can continue after you are confident and ready to learn more and go to lesson #2. Currently there are 12 lessons and a complete follow up course that is available for free. And please if you haven't already done so, subscribe to this channel as Google will inform you when new lessons are created.

I came here to pay my respect. I watched this video 6 years ago, I started out back then on a classical guitar, this was my first lesson ever. The teaching method is simply unmatchable, having been able to learn and play this so easily and flawlessly gave me sheer confidence and excitement to take on anything in guitar. Today I'm an excellent metal guitar player, all thanks to you. Had I started my guitar journey on the wrong foot, I might've felt discouraged and unworthy of playing, like many others do. But thanks to you, I am where I'm at, and I will be eternally grateful for your lessons every time I pick up the instrument, or look back at those times. Cheers friend and master!

If there was ever a time that I could give 4 more hearts to a comment, this would be the one! Hey Kara, I'm sooooooooo happy to hear this news and thrilled that you have accelerated so very far on your guitar... GREAT... JUST GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am of course very thankful for this lesson getting you going (and not bumming you out) but the real credit goes to you for taking action and following through... making the dream of being an excellent guitarist a reality. As you know, not so easy.. and defeat is only conquered by outliving it and not giving up. I hope we can keep in touch... my email is acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com and if there's any vids or recordings that you've done, I would love to hear it. I also want to know how you went from classical guitar to electric... (I probably have a thousand more questions). You made my whole month here with this news Kara... I couldn't be happier!!! bob

I can read notes an play most instruments if I know the choregrapic scale an where the equivalent notes are found on piano, if that makes sense. I can find the note charts but unsure exactly which spots are where I'd place my fingers on piano from MidC spanning 10 notes/piano keys. This would greatly help me in creating songs.

Hi Minecraft Man, great that you found my channel. The whole course is here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGusz8GjpbHJgLw.html and it will show you how to apply the pattern to different chords. The basic rule is whatever the chord you play, the first note of each measure you would pluck as first note the lowest Root or bass note of the chord. So if it's a D chord like in this video, the lowest D Bass root note on guitar in standard tuning is D open 4th string. An A would be 5th string open bass note, E would be the 6th string E note open.. We go over all that.. If you already know chords then you are so far ahead of most everyone else here... All the best and happy pickin' !! bob

A big tip of the hat to this instructor. This is the perfect way to teach someone how to play a musical instrument. Slow; precise; methodical; repetitious. There are two benefits to this, as I see it. (I'm certain there are more...) First, there's what I call the "ball of yarn" principle. If you can help someone find the end of the string, then it's off to the races. It all hinges on that first lesson. Writers call that "shooting the sheriff on the first page". It's the "hook" that keeps the reader flipping the pages. Second, the slow, methodical approach reduces "learning anxiety". It keeps the student focused on the here and now. It keeps them from jumping ahead thinking they're gonna play "Stairway to Heaven" in three days. Too many instructors pass over the simple stuff to get to the meat and potatoes. But ya can't learn to walk if you haven't first learned how to crawl.

Hey +Leon Davis , Great to have you here and a Big thanks for this incredibly educated insightful comment. You are obviously aware of many aspects of human behavior and levels of learning that I was aware of or even considered- I feel like I need some coaching or tutoring from you after reading this! I wish that I could say that this video was carefully planned , but that was not the case. And without the "road map" it's very difficult to repeat the process. Just this little bit from you is a big help but of course... that "ball of yarn" you rolled out with the string dangling has me very curious as to what else you haven't said here. I would love to continue this conversation and hope to hear back from you. My e mail address is acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com . Thanks again and all the best to you... bob

Pretty amazing stuff, Bob. I'm 73, and had a guitar hanging around for years. But, I've never been able to "get" anything, until I stumbled across your 1st lesson...quite by accident, actually. I wasn't even looking. But, you made it look so easy, and winter weather is here, in NW Arkansas. So, I headed to the basement, dusted off this simple little "First Act", and within a few minutes, I was actually able to get the rhythm of that first little exercise. It's all about repetition. Two days later, and I'm even humming that "One-Two-and-Three-and-Four-and" melody as I take care of other chores....and, I'm working on the chords, too. Thanks very much. If this old "Arkansas Dog" can do this, then anyone can. Thanks for the time and effort on these videos.

So many things here that you said are so true- the repetition, getting the melody and rhythm in your head. I hope a lot of people that visit here will read this because you just flat out got it- Hope you will continue with this whole series here- kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGusz8GjpbHJgLw.html .. cheers to NW Arkansas and happy pickin!! bob

I started playing guitar January last year and had too many stops so up until now I still consider myself as a beginner, also the fact that I am just learning by myself. Three days ago I decided to try playing my guitar again because of a pretty song I heard but it includes plucking which is a skill I don't know how to do. I searched for YT tutorials and it led me to this video. I've never learned so much in just a span of 12 minutes than I did just now. It makes me want to complete the 12 lessons and really improve my guitar playing skills. Thank you for this, sir!

This is by far the best lesson on KZread you go over each string repeatedly quickly and very slowly by you going over it, over and over... it allows the person time to give it a few tries as you’re explaining it.....other people just say put your fingers like this do that and they move onto the next step this is very descriptive really easily understood and I am already doing this song in minutes thank you so much I hope this guy makes more videos

Hi Debbie, great to hear from you and welcome! The fingerpicking is a great way to learn guitar because we don't have to first learn the standard chords to play (in other words, we can cheat- ha ha). The reason why we don't always need the full chords is we are not strumming though all the strings, as we get to pick and choose which one's sound good. This is a lot easier on the left hand. Wishing you all the best and if you need any help, please let me know okay.. Happy pickin' !! bob

Hi Francesca, wow, I am so happy that this lesson has helped and thank you for the kind words! This is lesson 1 of a series of 12 lessons in this course, and I will also show during those 12 videos the basic idea of which strings to pluck on different chords. (playlist- kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGusz8GjpbHJgLw.html). The general rule is, you always start with your thumb picking the first note of each measure with the "lowest Root Bass Note" for each chord. So with this D chord, the lowest D note on the guitar is the open 4th string... - an A chord would be the open A note 5th string... - G chord would be the lowest G bass note 3 frets up on the 6th string.. we go over all this... and more.... thanks again. You made my day! happy 2020!! bob

Hey Bob, I hope I find you well today. I wanted to put a few together to express my thanks and gratitude to you. You see, I've been a long time lover and admirer of those who play the guitar, there is something so beautiful in watching and listening to the beautiful sound and it is totally mesmerizing for me, always has been. Following on from that, my girlfriend bought me an excellent guitar (much too expensive for a beginner but said it would drive me harder to learn) to encourage me to take it up. That was Feb 2014, and since then I watched roughly, 60-70 videos for beginners, read a beginners guitar book and even gave up! ... it was extremely frustrating as I was unable to coordinate my hands, plus I had to constantly look at the guitar, in short, I began to dislike the guitar. That was ... until about an hour ago when I found your video. I watched your video once right through non-stop. My guitar sits like a trophy in my study, so I picked it up, tuned it and started back at the beginning, practiced with you by pausing, learning and replaying and I have to say, I'm in disbelief!!!. I'm actually playing along, albeit very slowly, but I will practice this until I absolutely perfect it before moving on, but I'm more advanced in the last few hours than I have since Feb last year!!! ... all due to your video!!! I seriously (very pleasantly) surprised, and so is my girlfriend. She went off to do some housework as I sat in my study, she popped back and asked if I wanted a refreshment and as she approached she could hear me practicing ... she is just a delighted as I am now. I can't thank you enough for the patient, calm and methodical way you present your tutorial, you gave me back a huge love of mine as well as the confidence that I can do this. Needless to say I'm now a subscriber and will share with my mates who are also attempting to pick up the guitar, also with limited success. They have had similar issues, so I will keep you posted on their progress too. Anyway, I'm rambling. I just wanted to say a huge thank you, and I look forward to playing along and becoming the guitar player I always wanted to be. Above all, I look forward to learning the guitar with my new tutor and friend, Bob! ... Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU! Seán

nubester Hey Sean , You Sir just totally made my day!!! I can't thank you enough for telling me about your guitar experience and the minor miracle that occurred for you through this lesson! I'm usually not at a loss for words but right now I'm nearly speechless.... I will try to continue however! Last year I was going through a very rough time in my life.. but to spare you all the agonizing details, I'll get to the end of the story. My friend who wanted to learn fingerpicking asked me to teach her something. So this video that you watched was pretty much the exact thing I showed her. She said, "You should make a video of this and put it up on KZread." she thought people would like the way I showed how to do it in small sections etc., Well, I thought that it would be a big nothing, and did it just to prove to her that no one would care (I even put sunglasses on cause I was sure it was going to flop). Well, can't even believe how well this is doing, and to be helping people out who were nearly ready to give up... can't even believe that at all! I have received some negativity from some people saying I'm going too slow., but the vast majority of people here are perhaps like me who need clear and easy directions that are repetitive... after all, this is the guitar and repetition is the key to learning. So I think what I have learned over the course of making these videos (and there's more to follow soon) is people don't want me to show them what to play, they want to know "How to play"., and that is a GIANT difference, especially for beginners. I equate it to the some of the terrible directions you get sometimes when you buy an appliance like a grill or something that you have to put together. You end of staring at the directions for an hour or so, then attempt to follow it and end up taking a hammer and forcing two parts together, breaking it ... then your wife tells you that you're an idiot for not following the directions properly. In any event, these videos may not be perfect but, clear directions and trying my best to get you to play is the only thing that matters to me. And hearing this from you gives me so much energy to keep going, you have no idea. Please always feel free to comment on any of the videos and let me know how you are doing. And if there's something that I didn't explain properly or you need help, don't hesitate! Have a great day Sean and ...so glad that your guitar is getting the attention it deserves!! All the best to you and your girlfriend! - bob

Hey Charlie, Great to hear from you and glad you are learning the fingerpicking! It's quite a diversion from strumming but the experience you have is really going to help as most people coming here don't know the chords yet. It will be a lot easier for you! Hoping you will take the whole series here as that will explain about the strings to pluck for other chords.. I think once you get that concept, it will be off to the races for you. +Bob Harris good thing I took two years of music theory - maybe that's why I can get chords. Bar chords (or whatever they're called) are really hard for me to play, though. I'm struggling to hold down multiple strings with one finger. Strumming patterns is another thing I need to work on.... looks like I've got lots of videos to watch!

  • @bobharris1497

The chords that I'm showing here are two fingered chords for beginners, real chords nonetheless. The barre chords are the most difficult so, if you are up working on that you are way ahead of this. But the pattern is cool and worth learning. Have fun, I think you will get it all... that's my vote!

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hello, I haven’t played a guitar since 1974 but have time and want to play again. Any videos on what to look for in a guitar? I need to purchase one and like all musical instruments there’s a wide variety in quality and price. I’d like to have some idea before I walk into a music/guitar shop. Help!

  • @AcousticGuitarVideosLessons

    @AcousticGuitarVideosLessons

    2 жыл бұрын

Hello @@shychameleon, great news about you wanting to play again- marvelous! So I actually have some good advice about buying a guitar. Whatever you do, don't buy online sight unseen. So we will just rule that out now. New cheaper guitars these days are built a lot better than the one's in 1974, that's for sure- they've come a long way. Not as "budget intense" as it was before, and you can get a pretty decent guitar anywhere from $250 on up. The make and model doesn't count either, as you can play two of the same and one of them might really stand out (even compared to more expensive guitars). Most of the guitar stores (like Guitar Center) will have an acoustic guitar room where you will want to go. The person in that room is going to be a guitarist... and if he/she has been working there a while, they will know their inventory. I bought a guitar for my sister in California not too long ago and asked the guy, "show me some of your best guitars that are easy to play in $xxx price range. He was more than happy to play a few. Now my sister who doesn't play couldn't really tell the difference, and I of course was helpful. So if you could bring someone, that's cool but you can go at it alone too. You first want something that plays easy. The body shape only counts if you feel that it will be easier (as you hold it) over others. That's a personal choice. But let's say you find a guitar that feels good... make sure you ask this question. "Playablility is a key for me... does this guitar need a setup? The setup is an additional charge where a tech at the shop will make the "action" of the guitar (string height from the fretboard) as low as possible without buzzing. This is so important because if the guitar is hard to play, you will be fighting it the whole time... and always wonder why I make it look so easy. A student here in the group was complaining big time that she was having pain when pressing down on the strings. After further review, we came to the conclusion that the guitar was the problem. She went and bough a new one and wow, she is tearing it up now with the fingerpicking (no pain!!). So playability is the #1 key to look for. Obviously the higher the budget, the guitars "should" get better which includes better sound and playability. But like I said, there's good cheaper guitars that not only play easy, but sound good too. Hopefully the guitar person will know what to show you! If there was 1 brand of cheaper guitars that I could recommend "sight unseen", it would be the Yamaha brand guitars. Reason being, they are very consistent. But that doesn't mean that you can't find a "no name" brand that is much better. I ended up picking a Ibanez for my sister which was better (and cheaper) than any of the Yamaha's there. However, all the other Inbanezes were not very good.. it's just that one was a good one. The guitar tech should know. I hope this helps.. I can keep talking about it if need be. Can't wait for you to get one!! bob

Due to Covid, my choices for learning to play guitar. Even though this is a video and not an actual hands on learning, it still tops most teachers out there. I'm only 5 minutes in and learned something new already that I can actually do. Not only that, but you keep it nice and simple, without going too fast or too slow. You sir just gained a new subscriber.

More to go of course, as this is lesson 1 of 12 - we will also learn 3 more chords and a song along the way.. Hope you will keep going, I don't think the Covid is going to go away anytime soon so no rush. If you need any help, let me know.. All the best and wishing you a great year 2021 on your guitar! bob

Glad you are going to continue with the whole series as that will give you some insights on how to apply the pattern to more chords.. Wishing you a great 2024 on your guitar! bob

Get a NYLON STRUNG (classical/Spanish acoustic guitar) for absolute beginners. Much softer/easier on the fingers and hands and you will improve much quicker. Also 5 minutes every day and keeping your guitar/music out is great advise. Learning guitar & music is a journey NOT a destination.

I hadn’t touched a guitar in over 30 years, developed arthritis in my fingers then broke my left hand below little finger. I decided to just pull out my guitar and play (just like riding a bike-not). I couldn’t even make a single cord and couldn’t begin to “finger pick” (never used a pick). Started this lesson very out of sync-then I got it. I was so thrilled I told myself if I master this again, I’ll take the next steps. THANKS for your incredibly calm and methodical teaching. 🤠

Hi Shirley, congrats on getting back to the guitar.. !! and with all of the hand issues, you have to give yourself a lot of credit for getting in sync after the lifetime 30 year break. I guess you pretty much have to expect lots of rust even at total capacity (don't trust those quotes.. ha ha.). I found this out with a new bike 40 years later . Though.. wow, should be no problem right... And hey, the saying was made for the bike .. That was what I thought before crashing into the parked car. To be honest, I had problems just getting on the bike. So as far as I'm concerned, if you didn't get hurt and had fun again, you are way ahead of the game. It took me another year to get back on that bike (this time I wear a bubble wrap space suit). I'm wishing you the best on your guitar and if you need any help or just want to let me know how it goes, that would be great. Have a happy rest of the weekend and glad you are playing again!! bob

Clear visuals. Concisely presented in a slow hand method leaving no doubt about the progression and right and left hand finger positions Left hand finger position @ frets explained and why. A teacher who understands what the student needs and needs to understand at a pace that can be absorbed and applied.

Hi Tre, thank you for the great comment here- I would give this 5 hearts if I could. Everything you are describing is what I was hoping students would get out of this and mainly, just to be able to play the pattern. Everyone learns at their own pace and you can imagine over the years some people commenting too slow, some commenting too fast. At the time I made this video I didn't have the ability to add graphics and have since added that to my newer lessons. I'm wishing you all the best on your guitar and hope you will keep going with this whole course (13 videos which is here- kzread.info/head/PLx1uwVXECJKjECVns43Kc6_f0X5bs6Ktl ), Thanks again!! bob

This was my first finger-picking lesson I did it yesterday and I'm doing it again today probably the third time I've watched this video still trying to get it down but this helps to alternate from just learning chords all the time I'm enjoying this so much thank you again!! HI Dawn of Light- thank you for taking the lesson here and yes, fingerstyle is great when just starting out because we don't need to make full chords. Full chords are necessary if you are going to strum but with fingerstyle, we can omit notes that are not part of the chord simply by not plucking them- quite an advantage. Hope you will continue with fingerpicking,!!! have a blessed day!! bob

@@janettremblay7410 Hi Janet, ahh yes, some nice tea and the guitar... sounds perfect to me.. I tried growing my nails several times but for some reason, it sounded like I was scratching on the guitar instead of plucking a clean note. I even tried buffing and polishing my nails (that didn't help either). I'm certain your nails will sound better than mine!
