Excellent lesson. I know the fretboard well because of my 2 years of music theory is high school. I'm just learning fingerpicking at age 72. I've strummed chords since I was a teenager because I loved singing. Once I could strum chords I got lazy and never tackled finger picking. Now I've decided I want my Martin D-18 to sing as well. I'm patiently studying all details of finger picking. Thanks so much for your excellent lesson. I'm so grateful. Finger picking comes so slowly, but I'm so much more mature now. I'm stickin’ with it.

Great lesson! I definitely noticed when learning chords such as the open C chord, there are two C's, though strumming the chord, there are also extra notes that sound great with them, such as a finger on the E note, plus the open G string and open E. There has to be some magic that explains why they sound so great as a grouping, when other notes definitely do not. Also, great arms and shoulders. You have to be spending time in a gym!

There seems to be several ways to pick, no surprise, but I like your system of three fingers as it seem easier. Thank you for the lesson and your wonderful smile. Rick

Practice, practice, and practice. No such thing as a shortcut. You knew that. 😊 Keep your guitar handy, and just pick it up and fool around when you have free time, my friend. During commercials, time-outs, huddles, videos, whatever … It’s going to take a zillion tries, so the sooner you get the first [zillion - 100] out of the way, the sooner you’ll arrive at the good ones. We already know they won’t feel, sound or look good, but that’s the point. If anyone could do it well in a few weeks, we wouldn’t get the pride of mastering it. (Plus, you need to gain finger/joint/muscle memory gradually anyway. Only then can you refine the sound.) So hack away as long as you can and then do it again do it again. (Yay for boomer humour!) I’m turning 61 soon and after a few years of lessons I can move barre chords around now. I’m not great, but I’m definitely on the way. It *will* all click into place one day if you just keep at it. But only you can put in the hard part. (You knew that too. Middle school’s … um … a while ago, huh?) If I can go from 0 to where I am in 5 years, you can certainly master barre chords. 👍 Before you know it, you’ll be wondering what you found so difficult! Remember, everyone: We’re moving an E or Em shape up and down the 6th string; and We’re moving an A or Am shape up and down the 5th string while using our thumb to numb the 6th. The trick is to start making those chord shapes with fingers 2, 3, and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3. That frees up 1 to make the barre *however works best for you.* Yep, Lil’ 4 is gonna ache. 😢 But Big 4 is gonna play awesome barre chords. Whenever Ol’ 1 gets the knack of mid-knuckle pressure. 🎉 Hope this was at least a little helpful and/or encouraging. Have fun! That’s the whole point, right. 😊
