Fine tuning the most expensive air stripper in existence. Does it actually work?

Спорт

Fine tuning the Air arms xti50 air stripper for improved accuracy downrange.
Ive been really happy with the performance of the xti50 so far but super curious about the air stripper. It can be fine tuned to a particular pellet or batch. lets see if it actually works..
The groups i shot are probably the best ive shot so far on film. the pellets i used were the JSB exact shorts in .177. they are quickly proving themselves to be the best pellet ive tested in the xti so far. they are super consistent and very accurate down range
we have previously touched on air stripper testing, the first video can be found here... • Do air strippers / muz...
i have since tried the same test using the H&N baracuda 8s and they aren't as accurate as the jsb exacts through the walther barrel. however i will do some further testing with them
the results were quite incredible especially in the wind,id like to try the air stripper on my Anschutz 9015, it think it would work really well.
it also looks like the air stripper would fit the hft500 barrel. id imgine it would be great for target use especially benchrest disciplines.
the rifle in the vid is the limited edition red and black laminate xti50 and the scope is a falcon endura ffp

Commenters don't seem to understand the principle of these, as the pellet rushes down the barrel it displaces air, causing turbulence and "dirty air" in front of the pellet, however, what is worse is the air just behind it, that immediately goes past the emerging pellet exacerbating the issue...an air stripper should be designed to direct the air, via cones and slots, out to the sides Whether this is actually the case isn't the question, whether it makes any difference obviously is.

UK Neil air stripper on my 9 year old FTP900 set at about 2.5mm gives outstanding tight groups using JSB 8.44's 4.53, nicer to shoot, no sight picture movement at all, before deciding a 'batch' of pellets are not good enough for comps maybe try adjusting the stripper first.

I have been using strippers for years for HFT and they were ace. I got the new Eaglevision stripper and tuner for my FAC guns and they honestly worked amazingly . Made a big difference and the groups were so so much better. Good video by the way mate 👍👍

A few points to consider: You need to test indoors to exclude the wind. Removing the cone has the air stripper outer tube act to concentrate the blast on the rear of the pellet. Worse than a completely bare muzzle. Changing the position of the cone also affects the barrel vibration characteristics. All of your "air stripper" results could be barrel harmonics changing. Add a test for when the cone is paper thickness away from contacting the muzzle. That shorts out the air stripping function completely, but would have vibration characteristics similar to the shortest setting you tested. To separate harmonic effects from air stripping, you need to find a way to keep the mass x distance of the cone in the same place relative to the muzzle, while only changing the cone lip to muzzle distance. Pellet length drives the distance and timing of pellet exposure to the initial air blast. If the cone is too close to the muzzle, more air follows the pellet down the cone. So a closer cone to muzzle is not necessarily better, except for the start of the air blast; up to a point. That air stripper tube has so much material cut away that the front may be vibrating on the (overly flexible) three remaining "pillars" around the generous windows. If so, moving the cone may alter that vibration to produce tighter or wider grouping. If you set the cone very far forwards you may find another "node" that produces tight groups. If so, the vibration is dominating air flow considerations. If you want to improve air stripping, increase the amount of air that the air stripper has to deal with. You can do that by shooting heavy for caliber pellets at 900 FPS. This assumes you have a FAC.

Correct on all counts mate. I'm working on an indoor space for this sort of testing too. I'm somewhat familiar with how the stripper is working and it's foibles, but going into mad detail in the vids would only really be watchable for us real nerds. I try to keep things simple, not go too deep and keep them enjoyable with a bit of humour. 😉

@@tillysgunstocks You are putting in significant effort. The question is how can one make that effort more meaningful, with a better signal to noise ratio? If you are concerned about the viewers getting bored, gloss over how the test has been normalized. As if the only variable is the stripper to muzzle distance, like you are doing now. Rather than me wingeing about your test, I could help by designing a series of 3D printable air strippers, that would have the same mass and mass concentration, with only the cone spacing from the muzzle as a variable. Does your barrel have a 1/2 20 UNF thread on it? How long is the thread? How far from the barrel shoulder to the front of the air cylinder? What is the radial gap between barrel and air cylinder?

Very interesting video,I think I might wait until I see a rifle dedicated stripper ie one for Daystate huntsman or airarms s510- if it wasn't for you doing these tests I'd never consider buying a stripper,my rifles have to do different things not purely target shooting.I would be Interested in seeing how much (if any) noise reduction compared to a mod & wether its useful for hunting.👍ta matey.

Interesting! Could it be that the closer than factory settings work better because you are using shorter pellets? Presumably there will be some relationship between how long the pellet is, and how far from the barrel crown the optimal stripper cone position is..? It would be interesting to see whether longer pellets prefer a longer gap!

Excellent video and really interesting. Who’d have thought that what is such a relatively small adjustment would make a difference. A friend of mine is currently experimenting similar with the barrel weight on his HW77, he is turning it ever so slightly between shots and swears that it makes a difference. Makes me wonder if the same could be true for silencers?

I love them both... The 9015 is built to fit me perfectly and handles amazingly. The xti is currently totally standard apart from some cosmetic tweeks. I think once I get a chassis on the xti it will have a slight edge over the 9015. At the longest ranges the xti is quite a lot better, but at all the usual distances 50m and less there's very little between them accuracy wise 😉
