On top of the 0-12 UW season, here is what else sports fans in the state of Washington were treated to in 2008: a 2-11 WSU team; 101-loss Mariners; 4-12 Seahawks; the SuperSonics relocation to Oklahoma City

One of the worst teams that comes to my mind is the DII Northeastern State Riverhawks. In 2019 they went winless, losing every game by at least 50 points every game, losing by more than 80 twice, and getting shutout numerous times. They went winless again the next year

2020 Vandy was also notable for another reason: they ran out of placekickers because of global pandemic and all, so they asked the women's soccer goalkeeper to play. Which is how Sarah Fuller became the first woman to score points in Power Five football when she went 2/2 on extra points versus Tennessee. That only happened in her second game though, because Vandy got blanked 41-0 by Mizzou in her first game.

I was on campus for the 2018 Central Michigan University Chippewas football season, and that felt like the lowest of the low. * 1-11, the 4th worst record in FBS * Only win was against Maine * Gave Kansas their first road win in 46 games in a 31-7 blowout * Scored 15 points per game while giving up 27.3 * Coach John Bonamego's wife was banned from the stadium after drunkenly rushing the press box CMU was never a great college football team while I was on campus, but that year was just sad all around.

The NCAA came down on Washington because Neuheisel was apparently involved with betting pools, that led them to have to hire coaches from within the program because Neuheisel sued both UW and the NCAA. The NCAA forgot to put that in the rulebook so Neuheisel was wrongfully terminated. The NCAA actually cost UW because they had to fire their coach without merit. Neuheisel was considered one of the best coaches in the country at that time.

I had been a casual football fan since about 2013 but it was really around 2016 where I really began to get into it… I just so happened to make the mistake of being a Rutgers fan at the time. Yes I did witness 78-0 in person. It’s a miracle those 4 years kept me a fan (at least 2017 wasn’t completely terrible). Them even going 6-6 this year has given me so much joy knowing what the pits of despair truly are.

Fun fact: I was actually at that 2017 Kansas-Baylor game. It was the most miserable game I’ve ever watched. I remember my dad telling me that there was no possible way we could lose to that Baylor team. I remember leaving memorial stadium that afternoon just so shaken at how bad a college football program could be.

First - I love your editing style, particularly your musical accompaniment, and I'm excited to watch more of your videos. Second - I was in the marching band at the University of Kansas from 2013-17. It certainly felt like those teams from 2015-17 belong in their spots in this video. I'm surprised that the 0-12 team from 2015 isn't the lowest, but the 2017 season was absolutely miserable, and I got to watch every snap of every home game and two road games! That Baylor game may have been the most miserable afternoon of my college career. They tried to announce a new stadium renovation (and I think they retired a former player's jersey?) at halftime, but nearly everyone in the crowd had already bailed on the game, and there weren't that many people in the stands to begin with. Those of us who went through the 2010s certainly appreciate our recent turnaround into competence over the past two years!

Nice effort at both ends, the research and the presentation. The power formula is very good for identifying teams that did NOTHING right. I'd suggest only two things to fix before the future DVD version. One is to break down the period 2000-2019 by four-year intervals. A season is too short a time statistically to identify committed mediocrity. (You could do two- year periods instead and throw in 2021-22 as well; in any case, I'd give 2020 a miss in the name of good taste.) Two is to stop referring to the New Year's Six bowls as the "New York Six." You did so at least twice in the video. Keep the voice regardless! And double-check for Wake Forest appearances on the list: I was there for undergrad, and I was astonished that they didn't make the ten worst team-seasons even once. :)

  • @MarkusAlkemus
    @MarkusAlkemus6 ай бұрын

Here’s the big asterisk on your ending note of “no team is bad forever”: None of it applies in the post-NIL/Free Transfer Portal era. Historically low teams like WSU and Rutgers aren’t able to pay players and coaches to stay now. They just get poached by the big schools. It’s one thing to get lucky one year and find a good coach that puts together a decent recruiting class to bring the team up to 7-8 wins. But as soon as that year is over, the coach gets hired by an SEC school, the players all transfer to get their big payday elsewhere, and the low level team has to start all over again. It’s impossible to string together winning seasons in this era since it’s open season every December

It would be really interesting to see how the results change if you exclude the FCS games and possibly also the group of 5 out of conference games to see how the standings would change. There are probably some teams that only beat one power 5 opponent but have a record artificially inflated by getting to play against relatively bad FCS/G5 teams.

i get why your sample size was from 2000 on, but I suggest you look at Northwestern from 1976 to 1982. Their best season in that stretch was a 3 win season in 82. They have a combined record of 6-69-1. They have a losing record of 34 games straight during that time. The lowlight was the game that broke the record. When they lost to the Michigan State Spartans 61-14, fans stormed the field, tore down goal posts, and chanted "We're the worst" If you want to pick a certain year, 1980 or 1981 was the middle of the losing streak

I’m a Husky and I think it’s worth mentioning that Jake Locker was injured early on in that season and that hurt us a lot. Also, it’s worth telling the story of when the Huskies scored a touchdown at the end of the game against #15 BYU and Locker spiked the ball, got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and the kicker missed the PAT. The Huskies lost that game on that kick. I’m not salty about it, I wasn’t very old when it happened, but I still think on average that team doesn’t go winless and it took a truly special season for that to happen! It was an awful team defined by a few awful moments. Willingham did a crazy amount of damage to a storied program’s history in pretty short time.

Any college can have a single awful season. Let me introduce you to the 1998-2002 University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars. In the 1990s, the UMM Cougars were having a rough run of terrible seasons. From 1991 to 1996, their best season was 2-9, with a 0-10 season in 1995. In 1997, they posted a record of 3-7, their best in years, and they started their 1998 campaign with a hard-fought 25-22 win against Mayville State. Then UMM lost their next 53 games in a row. The Cougars finished 1998 with a 1-9 record. From 1999-2002 their record was 0-11 every season for four consecutive seasons. And these were not close matches. All but one of these 53 games was lost by multiple scores, and most of them were massive blowouts. Across those five seasons (excluding their lone win at the start of '98) the Cougars scored only 535 total points while giving up 2398 points. In 2000, Bemidji State scored more points against them in a single game (a 70-0 thrashing) than UMM scored in their entire 11-game season (66 total points), and that still wasn't even close to the most lopsided loss the Cougars suffered during this five-year stretch. After 2002, the powers that be had seen enough and UMM was relegated from DII to DIII football to face a conference of weak Bible colleges, where the Cougars were finally free to become... merely mediocre.

Interesting enough, that 2008 Huskies team had future NFL QB Jake Locker on its roster. That season Jake was in his sophomore year, and was going into his second consecutive season as starter. However, in game 4 of the season against Stanford, he severely injured his thumb of his throwing arm and was ruled out for the rest of the season. I’d be interested to know, given he did go on to play at the next level, how much of a factor his injury played in the closing 0-8 performance of the Huskies with backup and future college football head coach Ronnie Fouch.

You should have included Cal in those without success. Not Rose Bowl since '59, no Rose Bowl victory since '39, and as you mentioned the only team to lose to Colorado last year and Arizona the year before that. How Justin Wilcox has kept his job for so long tells you the priority Cal admins place on a winning program...

Cal got cheated out of a Rose Bowl bid in 2004. Ever hear of a guy named Aaron Rodgers? Conference Co-Champions in 2006. Ever hear of a guy named Marshawn Lynch? On the other hand there's no excusing the Sonny Dykes disaster as being responsible for the demise of Cal football on the field and loss of season ticket holders despite a stadium renovation. Wilcox is mid and should be replaced for his dissonance.

2008 Washington was the unluckiest team of all time. First the refs robbed them of a win vs BYU on an excessive celebration penalty, then the one guy they couldn't lose (eventual first-rounder Jake Locker) breaks his throwing hand in the fourth game of the season. They were winning 27-9 when Locker got hurt, but his replacement might've been the worst QB in conference history, and it was all down the drain from there.

Those teams were infuriating to watch. It’s hilarious they both somehow beat Florida as heavy underdogs both times. Our defense this year might be even worse than those teams, but the amazing offense overcomes their ineptitude.

@@huntertrum3658 playing 11 SEC teams is harder than any schedule I can think of in recent memory. Wasn’t no Vandy or South Carolina on that schedule either. UGA, Florida, A&M , Ole Miss and a Bama all got January bowl games. Hell, A&M finished #4 overall. ( 😂 and now Jimbo’s gone) I can’t remember if every conference played but we did beat 6 teams that ended up in major bowl games (The 4 SEC teams, ND and Ohio St) and we beat them all by 15+ ‘cept Florida. (Kyle Trask, Kyle Pitts, Kadrius Toney, Treyvon Grimes and maybe Justin Shorter?) Mac Jones broke the LSU NC passing records set by Burrow (most passing yards/TDs in a NC game) and yards (maybe TDs too?) by a WR with Devonta Smith, who broke said receiving records by halftime. Bama’s RB had more receiving yards than any Ohio St WR in that game. Out of the four Heisman finalist the top 3 were all Bama players with a Bama player winning it, our o-line won the Joe Moore award/LT won the Outland trophy/Center won the Remington, RB won Doak, WR Hesiman/Biletnikoff, (handful of others) QB won the Davey O’Brien (Mac broke the single season NCAA passer rating and completion % ) I’m not gonna seriously say that Bama’s ‘20 offense was without a doubt the better offense, but I’ll argue to the death they were at least just as good. Anyways, genuinely hoping Jayden Daniels wins the Hesiman. He definitely deserves it and I hope my Falcons pick him up. Easily the #1 QB in the country IMO and if LSU had a defense then no one would’ve beaten ‘em. Good luck in yall’s bowl game.

You can imagine my smile growing and growing as you kept naming teams and 2008 Washington wasn't showing up. I knew that 2008 was my favorite Husky season of all time, but i had no idea it was just universally the most embarrassing thing a college football team has done in the 21st century. Washington going 0-12 in the midst of us beating them 12 years in a row is my most cherished football memory.
