Good explanation my friend. I am going thru the adjustments right now. I am 52 and recently had a knee injury that kept me out of the water for a year. I always surfed as much as I could pre-surgery but less then in my youth (before 40). Back then I surfed well. I find now that I’m getting back into the water I have and still making adjustments. It’s humbling to lose some of what you had but it’s life. Now I concentrate on Working out (dialing in things for specifically for surfing) and getting more volume in my boards. It’s been months of frustration getting back into the water but well worth it. Keep surfing!!

Your vids are always interesting. I struggle to find the right board. You might help me if you agree. I'm 58 yo, 70kgs, intermediate, average fitness but with some health issues (one lung is damaged, and 2 vertebrae welded together in the lower part of my back bone). I started surfing 2 years ago. I was first surfing with SUP since 3 years before. I've got to paddle a lot to go outside, and my pop up is slow. Big boards are impossible to duck dive, and difficult to manoeuvre. Shortboards are too difficult for me at any point of view. I usually surf 2 or 3 times in a month, on a beach break. Wave are soft, but can become hollow and punchy when chest high. When it's head high and over, the spot start to saturate. Period is often short, less than 7 seconds in Mediterranean sea. Waves are from wind, no tides (only a few inches). Actually I easily ride a 70 litres 8' foamy when it's soft, hips high, and period over 7 seconds (when no duckdiving is required). But for other conditions, that board is useless. For information, in Portugal, I surf waves more than overhead with this board (only trimming, no manoeuvres), but in my place I can't even dream about it. That's why I would like to find a board that suits my "every day" conditions. From soft waves knee to hips high, to hollow waves till head high. Hope I've been clear in my writing. English is not my mother language. Thanks for your videos. Daniel

Awesome info & video. I'm 5'3, 80kgs 54yrs old. Experenced lower intermediate. Surfing for 38yrs I've been shaping my own boards over the last 2yrs. 4 boards. The 1st n 2nd boards were really just getting my head & hands around it & how it all comes together. The 3rd was based on the Hyipto 5'6. Volume good. Goes really well from 2ft - 6ft face. 4th board swollow 5'10. More for supers jbay & a hollow fast beach break. I tadd under volume. Still goes well. Question: When shaping a board... How does one work out the volume in the board. Or the volume the board would take up?

displacment tank, fill up a bath tub, mark the level of water (with weights inside water), than push the surfboard all the way into the water (using the weights) and mark the new line where the water rises too. then take the surfboard out of the water, and see how many litres of water it takes for the water level to rise to the higher line. the amount of litres it takes is the volume of your surfboard.
