Yeah! The two weeks of learning what it feels like when you know you're going to be lifted up so that you can actually get up. The cursing about the board just not being the right one, but in my case... It actually was for my situation on the East coast. I started on a 9'0 soft top, but I could never turn it with the wind driven waves that I was in. Went to 17th Street WRV and bought a 6'4 fish that's a double to single concave thruster that turns on a dime for a fish. I still use it to this day, after a brutal 19 years surfing hurricane swell and loan it out every chance I can to help someone else.

For anyone reading this that’s new to surfing- if you’re at the point where you popping up, but you keep falling down, always look to where you want to go. Resist the urge to look at the position of your feet on your board when you pop up. Keep your eyes trained on where you want to go and trust that your body will handle the rest. If you look down, you go down.

Very true. I am a beginner but not a stranger to board sports.. i skated for about 8 to 10yrs. Even though i have balance and pop up at the mid center of my board, there's still that tendency you mention, looking at my feet. Also to ad to your comment, it helps to point your chest in the direction you want to go. And giving your board time to respond. It's not like with a skateboard, where you get instant result of any inputs. It seems to have a bit of a lag, especially longer boards.

Woah I just started learning how to surf two weeks ago and this video is 100% accurate to that horrible learning curve beginners face. Learned to eat waves, found Kanoa, now I want my own board :)

No matter how many times you get slammed or don’t catch one. Just that one little wave you stand up on for like 5 seconds makes it worth it .

I’ll never forget the first wave I ever rode. It was a left hander surfing my backhand, it was in the evening and the sun was glistening on all the perfect curves of the wave as it was peeling.

That's how I started. Bought me 1st board, went to the tourist breaks, watch the big kids too and spent the next 7 hours trying to stand, which happensed in the last 30 minutes of my day. When mom got there to pick me up I had rode maybe 2 or 3 slush faced waves 2 footers. Best summer ever!

Awesome cool funny entertaining and very true to life what you have to do to learn how to surf or anything for that matter... What's best about this video is that if you're willing to learn and practice practice practice practice and not give up you can achieve your goal whether it is surfing or something else... Awesome pointers and takeaways that people can use not only from a motivational standpoint but actual tips you can use in the ocean... Most important is to never never give up and any goal is achievable... Happy surfing from Virginia Beach! :-) Kyle

As someone learning atm I have just past the apologetic retrieval of the wetsuit from bin (metaphorically speaking) went back out only to suck for 1 hour and then eventually I stood up and surfed one wave. Once I had done that I popped up and surfed multiple waves over the next 2 hours having an absolute ball. Just keep practising 👍I'm almost 42.

As 'training', when I was 9, my surfing instructor took us 1 by 1 out when it was rough, made us paddle out, and lifted us over 10 ft waves and then dropped us. It seems quite nasty but it actually really prepares you for the shocks you get when you wipe out unexpectedly. It seemed horrible of him at the time though.
