Finding the Hot Wire, Knob and Tube Wiring

In order to determine which wire is the hot while working with knob and tube wiring, there are several methods available. One way is to use a "voltage sniffer," which beeps when near the hot wire. Mine was malfunctioning on this day so i used a simple continuity tester.
You can use the ground from an extension chord along with the continuity tester also as long as the circuit is grounded. During the days of knob and tube, ground wires were absent.

Since you have no pain, it is useful; but better is to connect another wire to a water pipe, which is grounded, and then test each wire to the grounded wire to find which one lights the tester.

@@Brotha00 All electricity is dangerous. Even 110 has a percentage chance to even stop your heart. Is it likely, no. Could 220 mess you up. Yes. 220 can "grab" and hold you to the source. This usually happens when hands or body parts make contact in confined spaces. The inability to pull away or be bumped off can cause a fatality. I've been hit a few times with 220. It's not fun and can definitely give you the collywobbles.

So how do you ground a new light fixture with knob and tube?

I tried the hack, but the light on my continuity tester wouldn't register, for some reason. It worked when I used it the regular way, one red on a white and one black probe on the other white. So, I figured out how to make the "voltage sniffer" work. What I did was connect a separate wire about two feet long, the gauge you'd find in a light fixture, to just one of the white wires and let it hang away from the junction box/wall for its full length, so that the voltage sniffer wouldn't be going off just from nearness to the other hot wire. It worked. I put that length of wire on one white wire, no beeps, and then the other; voltage sniffer started going off. The problem with the sniffers is the neutral and live wires are simply too close together at the wall for it to work the way you need it to in this situation.

Old wire my be to soft, I would recommend using a crimped fitting or a push fitting and make sure it’s insulated. Trying to twist knob & tube may result in the wire braking off inside the wire nut before it becomes secure.

My guess is so if you are wiring in a light for instance you would want the center pin in the bottom of the socket hot instead of the threaded portion because it's less likely to get touched when changing bulbs. Id imagine some electrical inspectors are sticklers about it since exis8 K&T it usually considered safe if operational and all new junctions are compliant

It’s an ungrounded circuit so you’ll be fine. You could grab it with your hand(as long as your not grounded) and a tic tester in the other and it would go off and you’d be fine. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING

I'm a licensed and certified electrician myself and I hate videos like this because it encourages other people like yourself who don't understand what they are doing or what they are dealing with to do things that they shouldn't because they could be seriously hurt or killed. This by no means is the worst video I've seen like this but I just wish that people who don't understand what it is they're working with or what it can do to them would just leave it alone and let us professionals do it. I've gone into homes and businesses that have had people who don't have a clue what they are doing but find out that they have tried to rewire their home or even just put in new outlets or lights and it's a complete mess and very dangerous. One of the biggest things I see is home owners think they know how to do this and I I come to find that they have the hot and neutral wires reversed and this can cause a lot of problems with your electrical system in your home and devices that you use if they even work not to mention this is a very serious fire risk and a big cause for electrical house fires. Please remember everyone that just because something will power on when you plug it in absolutely doesn't mean that its wired correctly and definitely not safely. Next time you think you will just do it yourself ask yourself is this worth the risk of my home burning down and losing absolutely everything and maybe even our lives the simple answer should be that no it's not worth it so please don't and let us professionals do this work and we will keep you safe in your home.⚡👍✌
