Free printable recipe is available on our site: www.kitchensanctuary.com/the-...
Ingredients:
▢1 baking potato - about 280g/10oz in weight.
▢1 tsp beef dripping - melted (swap for sunflower oil for vegetarian)
▢1/4 tsp salt
▢1/4 tsp black pepper
Process:
1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F.
2. Prick the potato several times with a fork.
3. Place on a plate and microwave on high for 5 minutes.
4. Remove from the microwave and brush the beef dripping (or oil) all over the skin of the potato.
5. Roll the potato in the salt and pepper to coat.
6. Place on a shallow baking tray, in the oven for 55 minutes.
If you want to see how the different methods compare then check out this post where I show you the 12 different methods I tested before setting on this way for making the BEST baked potatoes.

What's your favourite baked potato filling? I'll go first, I love a simple tuna mayo with nice strong grated cheddar cheese.

Combination of all or one of plain salt, cheese, baked beans. I do not like to mash up my potato to much.
I have never been good at cooking, so didn't have an interest in it. Then a few months back, I seen your recipe for stir fry. I made it and I loved it. Better than takeaway. I also made your sweet and sour pork and then yesterday I tried this baked potato recipe. Wow. I can give or take potatoes, but this was well nice. I loved the crispy skin and so did my mother. The reason I like your recipes is because you actually say how long to cook things, whereas a lot of channels don't give a time to cook for. As someone who's not a big cook, it's nice to have times to help you know when it should be ready. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Just made these for dinner… my hubby said it’s the best baked potato he’s ever had & he now wants it on weekly rotation! I have to agree. Thanks Nicky, another fantastic recipe for a hopeless chef 😊
Thank you so much for teaching us how to cook the "Perfect Baked Potato". I've been searching through tons of videos for years trying to find the perfect one. I made it your way tonight with a medium rare Waygu Picanha steak. I finally truly felt like I was eating at a fine dining steakhouse. You are Awesome Sauce! :) Much love from Myrtle Beach, SC
Have used your method a few times and the end result is great..very tasty and the potato skin lovely and crisp. Many thanks.
Beans and cheese would be my favourite. I always roast with salt and pepper and just brush with oil last 10min. I agree with you, you must cut the skins as soon as they come out of the oven to release the steam ensuring the skin stays crunchy:)
Microwave full power for 10 minutes for one, 15 minutes for a few. Then crisp in a pre-heated oven for 10-15 or even 20 minutes depending on how crispy you like it.

Thank you for making a video like this. I like when people test various methods to find what’s the best way to do it.
I really appreciate this video. I've been trying for 3 days now and 7 potatoes to figure out how to do this. My potatoes always seem to need more time. I would never have guessed 2 hours so thank you, this will save me a lot of experiment time. Funny thing is, I always use beef tallow so that was the 1 thing I was doing right from the start.
Just made this with 4 Spuds, 11 minutes in the micro, used cooking Olive oil and in the oven at Gasmark 7 for 55 mins. Came out delicious and crispy! Thank you for the recipe!
I seriously can't believe the amount of effort you have put into this video. Thank you so much!

We use this method too, five minutes in the microwave and finish off in the oven. Never thought about the beef dripping idea which we will try. When we put ours into the oven, we put a large metal skewer through it (can get 3 spuds on one skewer). The heat transfer seems to speed up the cooking time, saving even more money on the electric bills. Thanks for sharing. DrZ 🙏🏻
I'm impressed! I appreciate that you did all that testing. I will definitely try your micro/bake method. My only challenge will be how to save my beef drippings. Thanks for posting and all your work of testing these things out. Cheers.

For a long time I've been microwaving my jacket spuds before they go into the oven. Cook the insides first, then do the rest to crisp up BUT......never thought of using the beef dripping and seasoning. That's genius and an idea I shall use and, no doubt, thoroughly enjoy. Getting hungry for a jacket potato now.

I do my Baked Potatoes in the Air Fryer, just spray with oil and bake for 1 hour at 350 (for one the size Nicki has in video), they are THE best crispy skins EVER, and you DO NOT need to poke the potato so all that steam cooks the spud to perfection.

My girlfriend always makes the bake potatoes but she is out of town, and I had to look up how to make bake potatoes for the first time. I’m glad I came across this vid. I’m trying it right now but I’m using olive oil instead. Also, thank you for putting all the time and effort on this video, and come up with the best way to bake a potato. : ) Cheers!
My favourite food addiction is definitely potatoes in all forms. Being from Canada it is the Russet potato. My new favourite way is in the air fryer using med/small brushed with oil, salted. Takes 25 minutes. . A couple times I have thrown in lard or chicken drippings and they added something wonderful . Will try beef tallow now that I am buying small blocks of it from the butcher to make my own hand/face/body creams. Thanks for all your sharing, always much appreciated inspiration for dinner ideas when I have none :))
Will definitely try the beef drippings, I usually use evoo on the potatoes then sprinkle with kosher salt and do them on the bbq (about 425F) for 1 hour, turning them over then quarter turn then over again every 15 minutes. This gets all 4 sides. They come out crispy, fluffy and with a nice smoky flavour. Topped with, butter, sour cream, chopped green onion and bacon bits.

Thank you so much,I have tried a few times to get a crispy potato, I could never get it right, I just tried you're way and it is perfect,Thank you so much .
An interesting variation is to hollow out the potato once cooked, put the flesh into a bowl with butter, cream, Boursin soft cheese...mix to a purée, then spoon the mixture back into the potato shells and put them back in the oven for another fifteen minutes...the top of the purée becomes golden. Takes a bit more time, but the result is worth it.

Love your channel. We bake the potatoes then scoop out the meat ( sounds weard) then mix in some corned beef put it back in the potato skins and sprinkle cheese on the top. Put it back in the oven for aprox 15 mins. very nice and cheap too. Take care.
So glad you showed up in my recommended videos! I'm going to try it this way (but I am not using a microwave), and I'll use beef tallow. Thank you so much for a wonderful, very helpful video. I will be sure and update! Thumbs up. I'm subscribing. UPDATE: Just made them and they turned out great! ❤

Thanks for research👌🙏. Outstanding photography on your recipe posts on website. Photographer must love your excellent food😊
I've always just soaked potato in water sprinkle generously with kosher salt cooked 1hr at 450 directly on rack, skin is crispy and potato is fluffy, butter, salt and pepper,, maybe sour cream. But your method is excellent 👍 Thank you for your videos, may God bless you.
Great recipe. I placed the potatoes in the microwave and heated them for ten minutes. Afterwards, I coated the outer skin with dripping and cooked them in the oven at 220°C. The result was absolutely delicious.
I absolutely CANNOT wait to try this! Must be Fate because I just trimmed a roast and have the beef fat left over! Thanks for the great idea!

Thanks Nicky for another great video. I agree - bakers are the best! I use a very similar technique to you. But I'm definitely going to try the beef dripping, that was new on me. MY FAVOURITE? Butter, topped with cheese and baked beans - always a favourite in our house. 😉
I appreciate your dedication to the potato. A most marvelous food.

I used the microwave method and only had duck oil, otherwise followed your recipe exactly. Best baked potato I've ever had. Thank you!
I always microwave my potatoes, one spray of veg oil and then 20 minutes in the air fryer and they come out crispy on the outside and so soft in the middle.
I do a similar method ... no mw and I use ghee after 25 min "dry" bake at 425F ... then rub with ghee, salt and another 20 min. BUT ... this vid gave me an idea. I don't have beef drippings, but I do have bacon grease so I used that vs the ghee and YUM!! Thank you!
I tried it and I’m very impressed!

I dont have a microwave and I'm going too make these tonight but was just wondering if I season the potatoes and use the beef dripping before I put them in the oven or should I put them in the oven for abit of time first then do that? They looks really nice btw.
Can’t wait to try this tonight! Looks absolutely amazing. Also fair play to you for testing all those different methods, that’s some determination, to bring us the best results 🙏💕
I always add real bacon bits to the filling. Thanks for another great recipe and the beef dripping tip.
Ghee (clarified butter) is great brushed on the spuds! The lack of water makes it less likely to 'soggify' the skin of the potato, and you have that rich, gorgeous buttery taste.
I have a Panasonic combination microwave and the baked jacket potato setting does an absolute brilliant job. Jacket potato within 14 minutes and it's just as if it came out the oven. Crispy on the outside and either creamy or floury on the inside depending on the variety of potato.

I cooked a jacket potato tonight before watching this video. I don’t like microwaves. I coated the potato in olive oil and added salt and pepper. First 30 mins at 220 C in oven on baking tray. Turned temperature down to 190 C for another 35 mins. It was very nice and tasty. Next time I may add another 10-15 mins to baking time but overall I was very happy.
I slather the potato with bacon dripping I always keep in the fridge. Also salt and pepper liberally and into 425 oven for one hour. Sheer perfection and that crackly skin is the epitome of heaven.

Wow it’s really delicious. I had test it it’s really a great idea for making French fries. Who had test it? Thanks for sharing this beautiful video
Just a heads up. Microwaves do differ in power. In the States you can find 1200w microwaves. For a single baked potato the maximum amount of time would be 1 minute. Using 5 minutes produces a very overcooked potato that is not only fully cooked but very dry on the inside without ever seeing the inside of a conventional oven.
Well that's me heading to the shop for some bakers to do tonight 😋
Hi, could you tell me if you washed the potatoes first? If so, how did you dry them and how long after washing did you microwave them? Thank you in advance!

Thank you!! This was a very helpful, no mustards having, video about baked potatoes. I appreciate the extensive research that went into this video. I just have one concern. I saw a guy put mustard on his and I'd just like to know.... Who does that? Is that a thing? Did their parent raise them that way?
Do you need it poke with a fork for the 2 hour just oven version or it is relevant only for microwave?
Thanks for that 👍Gonna give it a go 🙏
Do you fully cook it in the microwave first? or just a bit with it stll hard?
Baked beans on the potato is nice and something else is if you add butter then pop on an egg - either fried or poached …. So yummy
Awesome vid thank you. Love it. Aloha🤙🏾
My parents literally just put them in tinfoil and blasted the oven for 90 minutes 🤣 without any seasoning or coating lol. Gonna have to try this
I prefer the baked potato done only in the oven which takes about 90 minutes for a medium potato. I do the oil salt and pepper but I also wrap in foil because I prefer my potato to be creamy inside and not fluffy which I find dry and is not to my taste, I really love a waxy, creamy potato which I think is a scottish preference, english people seem to love the floury potatoes. About 10 minutes before the end of cooking I unwrap the foil to crisp up the skin a bit however I prefer the skin to be less thickened, dry and crunchy than what is shown here and what you often get in a lot of baked potato shops is not to my taste at all. My favorite toppings are a bit of good sharp chedder, spring onion or chives, followed by coleslaw (homemade is best) then topped with a bit of sweetcorn. I also love some veggie lentil chilli and blob of sour cream.
Perfect. Thanks!
Yes!!! this is the prefect recipe ideas
I found this great crockpot method on the internet: Rub olive oil and salt on baking potatoes. Cook in crockpot on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hrs. Skin comes out crispy.
Could I boil the potatoes for 10-15 minutes before baking to reduce the time instead of using the microwave?
You can swap the oven step for the air fryer to reduce the time and increase the crispyness I’ll never cook them any other way again
thanks! great video
My fav filling is a pat of butter, a dollop of sour cream, sprinkle of chives and lots of salt & pepper.
