Finding Optimum Mag Position (Start Up Time) on my 125g reel.

Just to correct a technical error for some of you technically minded folk, I mentioned the magnetic field experienced by the spool is inversely proportional to the distance of the mag from the spool. I SHOULD have said inversely proportionally to the SQAURE of the distance from the spool. ie mag twice as far away is 4 weaker braking, 3 times as far away is 9 times weaker braking, 4 times away is 16 times weaker braking and so on......
Rod: Zziplex TXL
Reel: Zzeta Tuning/Abu 5500
Lead: 125g
Line: Sakuma 0.285mm
Shockleader: Asso Ultraflex 0.70mm

Ha ha how you find out about that? Oche was a mud bath, 90 degree crosswind all day so I guess I should be reasonably happy.

Off topic from the video but could you possibly upload another video on vibrato (specifically with bends)? Your improvisation of Angus in Paris 79’ had some really accurate sounding vibratos and I’ve been working on mine for months. If you could make either a tutorial or even just a video showing your vibrato up close it would be extremely appreciated!

Thanks for the compliment! Ive veen listening to angus for years its all about the speed and depth of vibrato. My vibrato bends arent that good. But on a fretted string just its close. I think solodallas is doing tutorials soon on amgus style and vibrato watch some of his videos there are good closeups.

Another great video! When you mention about backing the mag off until a second or so into the cast, seeing maybe one or two coils starting to lift? Im not a field caster, just a mere fisherman. I use two TFGear Smag65's with abec5 bearings, both blocks removed, red rocket fuel, and find these on the edge a little for fishing sometimes especially if a side wind picks up lol. I dont know what would happen on a field with wind behind me lol.

I always leave a block in with my fishing reels usually. Not the worth the hassle of crackoffs in a dark beach!

I want to learn to pendulum cast but the technique looks so difficult and dangerous to you and your gear if you get it wrong, I wouldn’t do this for tournament casting but to get further on the rocks to get into gulleys, any tips on the drop of a 6oz led on a 14ft sonic X gravity?

Nice vid , how much line does the 5500 hold? I’ve been fishing for 35 years and never been able to hit 200yard on the field even with a tuned Abu 6500 tsr I think my max was 186 yards the rod I got for field and rough is the AFAW tournament Grand Prix which is a weapon but far to stiff for me to bend I think, but my fishing rods are zziplex m4gt which for fishing is the best I’ve ever used by a mile

Still further than most Jason! Not sure exactly how much it holds I had 0.28mm on there. Prob 300m of 0.28mm at a guess. Ive heard that AFAW is crazy stiff too! I would like an m4gt myself for a nice fishing rod and maybe a profile.

@@djrmonix the AFAW Grand Prix is like a broom handle😆 but beautiful and light to go with it but I fish a league in the Bristol Channel so I needed a rod to drag the fish through a lot of. Snags, I’ve even made up my own reel consisting of 4 different Abu’s I’ve had lying around with abec 9 ceramic bearings but with a Center mag with 2 magnets and fair play she’ll spin for at least 2 mins with mags off, I need to master the art of casting reel down as I’ve always said reel up for fishing and down for casting , u got some good tutorials there tho so keep up the good work 👍

Hey I was just wondering if you could give me any tips on pendulum casting for a beginner

Get a good solid off the ground cast going with a bit of rotation to learn the fundamentals like body power, weight transfer and solid punch/pull. There are some good vids on youtube by john holden and tommy farner on groundcasting. I wouldnt even think about progresing to pendulum until you have a good decent 170-180 yard otg cast. Pendulum there are so many variations these days best thing is to go to a casting club or find an instructor who will find the best style for you. The most common errors for beginners to pendulum is drop too short, and coming round with the rod then doing an overheadthump at the finish. These powerful styles rely on the rod coming round the side, not over the top. This is why practicing ground cast important.

Thanks for the tips I will use them thank u I was wondering if what I use is good for pendulum casting I use a daiwa Paul Kerry supercast rod and a abu 6500 mag elite and ruffly use 3 to 6 ounce to cast

I didn’t know also that you should loosen drag when casting, does this increase distance?

  • @djrmonix

    @djrmonix

No its just incase you accidentally turn the handle and put reel back into gear when casting, it should save damaging the pinion gear.

Sorry I assumed you were referring to multiplier reels. With a fixed spool reel you tighten up the drag so the spool doesnt slip when power casting. If the bail arm flips over a lot hold in place with a rubber band when casting.
