me too, totally drained me. No wonder, i got 0 dopamine from all my effort. Didn't care about what i did, just wanted to do good in eyes of others, didn't like the community and was not that competent. Ended up depressed and feeling empty.

Perfect breakdown and really related to many of these. Passion is not born from day 1 and sometimes it's take trial and error and it requires suuuchhh patience. You sometimes have to go through a bunch of things and realize what you don't like, to find what you do, but it can be hard. Love how you brought the science part in as a cognitive neuroscience lover

I’m 22 and I feel like I’m wasting time. I really want to be a vet but did so I have research on it and it doesn’t seem worth it. Especially the student loan debt to pay ratio and burn out rate. I’m still learning myself so it’s been hard to find any other thing that I would enjoy. I know that I love animals and science.

It sounds like you've identified the subject matter that interests you. However, what about the workplace characteristics that you enjoy? For example, do you like to work with people or things? Do you like abstract ideas or more concrete tangible solutions? Do you thrive in a fast-paced high pressure environment or do you enjoy slow-moving traditional sectors? In my early 20's, I was struggling to find the right college until I met a lady who helped and suggested to enroll the best college for me and it's 2 hours away from home. I drove there and graduated 6 months later and got a job! 😁

Yep, I published a paper on Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory before, which is basically what Dan Pink based his book on. I also really benefited from our conversation about soft skills and made a point in this video (or the next one.... forgot since I batched them) to differentiate between the importance of skills in the context of the company.

Honestly, this is stuff I wish I knew when I was in my 20s!

I don't know, I see myself as an artistic type but the demand is arguibly low af unless im entirely unique AND really good. Which may take another decade to reach. So my thinking is to just work a trade, but I HATEEEEEE math so that's also a difficult choice

Depends on the industry and the nature of the work. Really volatile times now but I would say focus on a broad hard skill you can really master to close the skills gap. After all, people pay for experts rather than generalists.

I’m a 20 year old girl, graduated from college for Business Management with a focus in Entrepreneurship. I have a job that pays 11 an hr but I can’t drive yet. My last years of high school I was extremely depressed because I didn’t know what to do with my life. Everyone pushed me for real estate and I went with it for lack of other ideas, but I attached my depression to it so for me, in my head, real estate became the worst possible career. Now I still have no idea what to do

@@annalucia2663 For people in India, that ($11/hr) is a lot of money, really a lot! If one works for that rate for 20 days (8 hours/day), that person can spend 5 months in India doing nothing. That is seriously a lot of money.

This was a great video though I still really do not know what I should be. My parents want me to go big and doing something like being a doctor or computer science, but i don't have the work ethics for that and I just don't know what suits me. This video was still awesome tho I have a better idea

I know a lot of doctors of computer science folks who are unhappy. Job hop and try different things if you have to. What's important is you do what's right for you, not your parents.

I'm not sure if I don't like my job or if I'm to lazy to do my job but I constantly after every weekend not wanna do my job and think about doing other jobs so you have any advice

I'm 35. Just got my degree in biology last year. I kinda wish I had done engineering. I have no career development and no clue what I can do with this degree or what I want to do. Seems like a useless degree unless you go to grad school.

I am wondering why of all of these career advisors, no one has spoken about the negative aspects of having a career. Doesn´t it mean devoting ones´ self to do the same or similar job for over 20-50 years. It also shows how limited people are and how limited they choose to stay. It is a major cause of stress because there are others competing, in higher positions who are or maybe blocking you and those in lower positions who are trying to get ahead of you, in one way or another. These are the main reasons for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, RIGHT? Why not do a video about this side of, "The Career"?

Agreed. Also: at 59 - the end of career for many - I emigrated, cashed in any security I had … and am basically starting over. It’s frightening. This has created a kind of end of career crisis + crisis of meaning/legitimacy and loss of continuity: “what have I done with my life? What now?” questions. Easy to spiral down. Low dopamine/serotonin!!! The things which seemed interesting and motivating when I was young all seem vacuous and uninspiring… been there, done that. Also suffered life long depression, low self esteem …so a bad situation made worse. Difficult sea to navigate - and no easy answers as to how to make a living the next 20 years! I was a Graphic Designer but who needs an old dog like me? So doing handyman work now. Truth be told most old designers retire or move move on leaving space for younger more creatively agile and tech-skilled people. Point I’m making is there are psychological factors to deal with and it takes courage at every phase of life… and the mental and emotional challenges are a huge factor…

I want to be a 50s housewife.....somehow I'm the head of a department working 60 hours a week in a job. Id make the best housewife.. i love cleaning, and cooking and id do anything to make other people happy.

Exactly he's not reaching out to people in this situation let alone actually helping them find their preferred career/major to lead towards a good pay job he just does what every other video does and gives a philosophical outlook and then say make a list which won't help at all, knowing what you do doesen't make a career or degree choice magically appear because not all of it in fact most of the time NONE of it is career based!

im 17 turning 18 in 5months i have no idea what i want to do in life, my parents are pushing me towards the military i dont want to go however they are sending me to a taster session, i just want to be financially free. time free and location free.....

@@wishlist827 why do you have to go to college? If you must, then you can try going with an undeclared major and take courses to see what you're interested in. In the meantime, I suggest getting real-world experience via apprenticeships, internships, or part-time jobs. Informational interviews with real people who work in fields you're interested in will also help to get a better idea of what they do.

@@TheSpider42b There’s plenty of money to be made doing that. For example, James Clear sold 3 million copies of his book Atomic Habits after working on his blog for years. I would recommend the first thing is to get a mentor on the niche you want to develop expertise in and develop a profitable business model, and then grow that podcast/creative writing outlet (e.g. blog) while working a job that gives you stability. Once the side hustle is profitable enough to be your main hustle, you can make the transition. This is a stepping-stone switch.
