Finding MORE GOLD in the illegal ground sluice!

Part 2 of cleaning and removing the illegal ground sluice. I had to hire some muscle for this one to remove those large rocks. But under the large rocks was more large gold. Including one really nice nugget.

Dan, you said you “hope I earned your subscription”. You earned it when you said you HIRED your son to help you clear out that old sluice. My dad got heavily into gold panning and sluicing in the early 80s and co-opted me as his teenaged muscle. I vividly remember spending hours shoveling literal tons of gravel and sand, hauling endless buckets of water and dumping them into the sluice, and, always, freezing my ass off in the frigid North Saskatchewan River. Thanks for not taking your son’s labour for granted. ;-). Lance in Canada

I bet he even made you buy your own food, pay rent, and buy your own birthday presents. Kidding aside, I don't understand the mindset, today, where fathers (and mothers) should work endlessly for the whole family, but the fruit of the kids' labor isn't also shared. This seems to me to be part of the reason parents now have to have some collateral investment for retirement. If you have children, your retirement should be as secure as you taught your children to make it.

I was spending a “fun” day with a goofy uncle & my dad panning in the 70s when I accidentally discovered an antique piece of barbed wire sticking out of the ground. My uncle made hundreds on the barbed wire, which we spent 3 days pulling up once we knew what it was. I got a $20 finders fee, but none of the promised pay for the original panning or for the hard labor. Can you tell I’m still salty? 😉

So yeah, they shouldn't complain and instead learn, otherwise they're just trying to waste his time!

Dan, something that I do might help you in the future: I always carry a small, tough but lightweight ratchet strap when 'sploring the streambeds. Loop the strap around the small to medium bolder to be moved (NO Monsters!), continue with one or two more wraps and then fasten the other end to a solid tree or rock. (Sometimes I use one or two 3 or 4 meter lengths of 1/2" nylon rope too). Tighten the ratchet until the rig is pretty snug, go to the middle of the strap and moderately lift it. The mechanical advantage is high and if the strap is wrapped around the 'mover' then it will scoot it a little or even roll it. Loosen the ratchet, take out the slack, click it 2 or 3 times and repeat. Not stressful, light and very easy on the back, legs and the 'ole recirculating blood pumper. It might take a few minutes but lying in the streambed gasping for air, exhausted and unable to move will burn up a LOT more time. Remember - the pyramids weren't built in a day. :~) Good to see you out and about! - Joe S - (from the old GPEX)

“An illegal ground sluice built by the old timers”. Isn’t pretty much everything they built now illegal in BC? Lol

  • @royjohnson465

Dart Mart ~A tiny in-river sluice, 2" inch dredge, 'or' small ground sluice is illegal (not legal) in BC "but" then as a huge hypocritical double-standard the BC government legally allows the logging of massive areas clear cutting trees on mountain & hill sides, allows jade miners & large mining companies to blast &/or dig large massive holes hauling mineral materials with rock trucks, 'and also' the BC government legally allows storm sewer drains from the streets of Victoria, BC to drain directly into the ocean untreated (not treated) that I do know for 100% sure from first hand but I was also told that this cities sewer is also drained into the ocean. Along with other towns and cities in BC dumping their sewer directly or indirectly into the ocean, rivers, and into (under) ground water with so called 'treated sewer'. Also allows 'agricultural' pesticide & herbicide chemicals into the ground water. BC government legally allows big environmental alterations and damage done by big companies and cities (& towns) 'BUT THEN' steps-on a small time artisanal hand gold miner-prospector as the evil big polluter enemy as a scapegoat is a pathetic joke. A hypocritical double-standard like I said before!

Im loving this series. I was just about to suggest you bring an actual grinder disk for cutting instead of the diamond concrete blade but right at around 4:30 your friend says he should have brought one right as I was typing this! hilariously convenient. I would love to learn prospecting someday when I have some more time on my hands. I also live in BC, just a little more south in Victoria! Great content Dan! Keep it up.

Ya'll are working hard for the money. Good job ! Please advise Bryson to bend, and lift more safely. Lift with legs, not back. I KNOW how that can lead to back issues now and when older. Good helper, just don't want him hurting more than he should.

The strange gold could be rock or electrum, could be a more silver rich deposit, it has sort of this kind of color, but i bet it could be other alloys as well, probably mostly gold but electrum and other natural alloys does kind of look like that in terms of color.
