Finding Home | A New Zealand Love Story

While the world is in disarray and I look on from afar, like everyone else, I've been at home looking back, trying to look forward. I recognise the privilege I have to even have room to reflect on how far I’ve come - so hello, welcome to my glorified home video that I hope you enjoy and maybe get something from. Also happy 27 years to me ha.

Yeah, I mastered a number of things to my personal satisfaction on my obscure KZread journey but this sort of narrative from collected footage or a framed narrative was something I never got to. Still bugs me 🤔😁

Yeah that’s what us Māori and also some Kiwis call our home country. Which in English translates into ‘Land of the long white cloud’. Our people are very spiritual, like most other natives around the world.

This is not just a compliment...it is the truth. She is not only mechanically good at her craft, she also pulls from her human experiences and uses the entire world as her story board. It's a gift not just to her, but to all who are fortunate enough to experience her creativity.

When it comes down to it, leaving home and experiencing all these new things just allows us a new perspective into what we took for granted - sometimes it's just what you need to break apart and stay away, sometimes it helps you appreciate what you had even more, enough to come back with a fresh mind.

Only those who wander know the true meaning of home. It's not always a place, it's not always the people, it's not always the same, but the feeling you get when you are there, or when you know you are finally going home, is unlike any other. I hope you get a chance to wander far and wide again (and I hope I do too ;-) ) so that you can once again experience the feeling of going home. One of my favourite songs is by Dire Straits, called Going Home. It was played on the aircraft as we boarded - 2 days after my release from hospital - the memory of it can still make me cry. I arrived in the middle of winter wearing just a t-shirt. I didn't feel the cold or the wind or the rain. All I felt was the joy of finally being home. I'm glad you're back here, safe and sound, and telling your stories. I look forward to some more of your adventures ;-)

Not FIN. ENTRACTE. You are not complacent, you had experienced brief, intense affairs with new places and people. Your memories will fill you with the joy of those days/months/years, but nothing will match your original feelings of "finding home" except experiencing new places and people with whom you can enjoy intense relations. You can never go back without it being a disappointment. You must always move forward to have those intense feelings. I just finished fourteen years of provisional living. Before that I lived in a different country every two to four years over twenty-five. My experiences with people, places and events paralleled your comments and videos; I embraced the location, dove into the culture, loved the people, fell in love, ached when I left each place, person, lover. But soon I was somewhere new and the beauty of newness filled my head and heart again. Almost forty years of this led me back to family, where no one understands my experiences. But it is home. Eventually, you find home, and you will be happy to have roots. That very long hug that your mother would not break was an underlined statement that should not be missed. You are the warm hearth in her home and heart. The foreverness of real love. Continue to dream and adventure fearlessly as long as you will. But in your heart, know you have a home, a love, forever. You have only arrived at an intermission.
