Finding Clay for Pottery to Match Ancient Salado Pottery Sherds
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I head out to the Gila River Valley to find the clay that ancient Arizona potters used to make Salado Polychrome pottery in the 1300s. Look at the Safford Valley Grids, ancient Native American waffle gardens.

I worked at Morenci Mine for 5 years in the late 90's and would drive the many gravel roads in the area. Did not know about the agricultural grids. Will have to revisit the area and pay more attention when hiking/driving there. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video!! I have collected some clay from the road cut as you leave the agricultural grids heading back down the hill towards the Gila / Bryce. It was only about a month ago so I have not tried to build anything from it yet. My wife and I have visited many smaller sites and shelter caves in the Gila mountains just north of where you filmed this.

The Safford area has some amazing sites and ruins and there is still much to be learned because very little archaeological work has been done there. Let me know how that clay works.
Awesome video!

My Clay isn't plastic enough, what is the reason?

Not all clay is a usable. Maybe it is just not very plastic. You can try purifying it more or just find a better clay.
