FINDING BIRTH FAMILIES: The Struggle To Make Connections With The Past

Meet four people who know the emptiness an adopted child can feel; four adults struggling with the question, "Where did I come from?" Sealed adoption records and an infamous black market baby ring in Augusta, GA have made it impossible for them to know anything about their biological parents or their medical history. We'll also share the joy of three siblings who found each other 50 YEARS after they were separated, thanks to a story that aired on WJBF.

I was told I had a sister who was put up for adoption about 6 years ago. She was born in the 90s. While looking for that sister I found a brother I didn't know I had. I found my sister this past August... only to find out that we had three more brothers who were also adopted out. We are still looking for them. Edit 04/24/2019: I have found my remaining siblings. Four more!

I can relate to that very much, I am 68 years old now, I was told from an early age ( 6-7) that I was adopted and what that meant. But I was also told that My Birth Parents were deceased, No sense looking , so I never did until much later in College, I was curious and tried to get information, I got absolutely no where.. I recently requested Medical Information from the Agency involved, to My great surprise and utter dismay was soon told that My Birth Mother was still alive, Contact was initiated but refused, OK I do know that I have at least one Half Brother born about 18 months after Me,, to a Man not My biological Father.. Pretty much all I can do is wait for My Birth Mother to die , I did the Ancester.com thing as well. and so far no Half Brother, but there is a Very close first Cousin match and about 4 relatively ( pardon the pun ) close second Cousin matches and then about 1500 fourth and fifth Cousin match's. So far no one knows who I am, so I am the best kept secret. Unfortunately without at least one accurate and correct last Name, I am completely stumped. Good luck finding Your Blood People. God Bless. Kevin

Hi adopted people , I was adopted as well when i was 6 months old and iv never located my birth parents, i was a rebel and depressed girl growing up even tried to commit suicide many times but the Lord was good enough and he is the reason i am still here... my life was horrible until i gave up my life to Jesus..u kept saying u wanted to find out who u are... i just want u to know that u cannot find who u are in people.. people fail.. u will only be able to find out who u really are and be truly and COMPLETELY HAPPY AND WHOLE in JESUS CHRIST.. i looked out in people to fill the void the emptiness that i had but i couldnt find it..cause people do fail us.. but Jesus doesnt.. when i found him i tell u now lady i am 100% HAPPY 100% WHOLE 100% KNOW WHO I AM..dont look in people what u can find only in Jesus Christ darling.. May the Lord bless and change ur life... Much love ... Giselle...Lopes... xx Romans 15:13 “I pray that God, the source of hope, will FILL you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Jesus loves you and he will never forsake you girl.. i dont even feel a abandoned child anymore.. cause the Lord jesus became my father the day i let him cure me and took all the pain away.... i want happy and i found my family in HIM!!! You have to try jesus so u can feel what i feel living and trusting in the Holy Spirit.. words can never tell you what it feels like to have his love and mercy...Your are loved by jesus u have no idea.. i pray that someday u will be happy and filled with the holy ghost love to the poibt that u wont want to find ur real parents anymore.. because the lord wil make you whole.. and happier than many kids with real parents... What ur looking for is right in front of ur eyes.. its not in people that u will fill the hole...only jesus can fill the hole in ur heart...amen..trust in the Lord..dear..

Adoptees should know that unwed girls and women were routinely punished or shamed into giving their children up. It was considered selfish and shameful to keep the children. It makes no sense except to demean women.

Apprently AncestryDNA has found two full-sisters and perhaps at least a half sister and half brother. My adoption records were sealed and I have spent a life wishing to find my biological family. Sadly they have not answered my polite and restrained messages on ancestry; a messaging system that would insure they remain anonymous. In five years my state will open my records due to my age. Oh well...

I share Your frustration completely. While I know that I have a Half Brother, He is not on Ancestry's database. He could be elsewhere, and I just have not found Him, although I don't hold out a lot of hope that direction as I am 68 He would 66 1/2 A lot of Us at this age just don't get into the DNA thing even adoptee's like Me. I began My search for other reasons , I wanted Medical information, I got precious little of nothing from the paperwork from the adoption. I had an earache when I was 2 months old ! nothing on Birth Mother or Birth father. Ancestry.com has found a Female First Cousin so closely matched that She is nearly a Sibling the match is so good. unfortunately My inquiries have also remained unanswered, This Woman almost HAS to know the story, but nothing for the past 4 months. I have several second Cousin match's as well and over 1500 3rd 4th and 5th Cousin match's and the only one that has replied to Me at all let alone positively is a Match so far down the list that She and or We are finding it nearly impossible to find a common Name unfortunately the First Cousin is Female and very likely registered in Her Married name, which helps Me not at all. With out at least one accurate Name, even DNA is not foolproof and still a very difficult process. Which side is My First Cousin on ? Mom or Dad ? the overlay of the ethnicity Maps suggest that She is probably on My Birth Fathers side and He would be about 99 if still alive. This miserable State will not release the un amended Birth record until after the Birth Mother dies or gives permission, and that has not happened at this time. Good Luck on Your search and God Bless. kevin

I would do anything to find the daughter I placed for adoption in 1997. I just sent off an Ancestry DNA test kit to hopefully find her. She is now 22 years old. I placed her out of love. I was young and in college and knew I wouldn't be able to give her the life she deserved. But since the day she was born my heart has been broken. I have missed her every day for 22 years. I cry often. I also live in Georgia and keep hitting closed doors. Usually it's a birth child looking for the birth mother but I am the birth mother looking for my birth daughter. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do. Thank you.

There's 2 sides to DNA searches... both *have to be willing* to connect. I made frequent donations to sperm banks over 7 years while in college. A lot of us did that in the 60-70's as it was easy money. DNA sequencing was science fiction back then, and it was before computer records. I tried 23andme for the health profile, which included ancestry. It was a shock, the number of biological children and grandchildren. I tried two more ancestry testing companies. Same shocking results. Thankfully I did these tests anonymously. I don't want to suddenly have 100's of people contacting me. I don't want to be found. I've never wanted a family. My concern though is people marrying a sibling.

I found your mom and dad. I’m so sorry. It appears your mother died in childbirth in 1973, along with your sibling. That must be why your dad gave you and your sister up for adoption. West Virginia is not an open birth record state. You can obtain your certificate. Maybe your sister will be listed too? I would contact a judge or clerk and plead with them to let you know your sisters adopted name. ❤️❤️ I wish you the best of luck.

I don't know where to start to look for answers to family history. Regarding my mom who passed in 2008. And the mystery to answers I would like to find out about my heritage. My mom was adopted born in Vancouver B.C. Canada. By my grandparents who then moved to United States, Idaho then Washington State. But no questions were answered before they passed & also before my mother passed to where she came from. Also my mother have up a baby boy 3 yrs + before I was born. So I don't even know where to start to look for him. I don't know his bday or anything about him. It just pains me not knowing & also knowing what my background is & where my mother came from & history. Don't know where to even begin. And why does it have to cost so much for us to get answers thru DNA TESTING.
