Y’know, fox hunting is a great activity to do if you’re interested in search and rescue. I was a cadet in the US Air Force’s auxiliary program and one of our core missions is emergency services, particularly for crashed planes. When the plane crashes, a radio beacon activates automatically and does exactly what the transmitter in a fox hunt does.

This is my first introduction to a Fox Hunt. As a retired Geocacher it looks like Geocaching for Hams!

Yeah pretty much! Lots of different skills involved, especially when you're trying to spot it!

Did my third fox hunt this past weekend. Second time that we could have ridden a bike. My son gets tired from all the waking, was thinking a 4 wheel two person bike might make him a bit more interested in it. I have been enjoying it.

To be even sneakier where you bury the fox, put it on a delay say 5-10mins before it starts to Tx & head in a different diagonal away from it & only then announce that it's active. This introduces a short delay as many would be trying to DF your announcing transmitter to get a better head start. Sounds like lots of fun was had by all. Congratulations on the 20K subs !!

Thanks John. Someone even sneakily suggested we attach it to a helium balloon with fishing line... nobody would look up to find it ha!

Had your club colleague used tape which on the fox was closer to the colour of the timber, that would be a fantastic disguise. So many great ideas!

For close in hunting a variable attenuator with my 2m beam is helpful to get in the area, then I switch my dual band HT to the 3rd harmonic and switch to a 70cm beam and it'll walk me right up to the transmitter.

I recently gained my Technician license and will join my first fox hunt, weather permitting, tomorrow morning. Very pumped up and feeling like a babe in the woods. Thankful for local Hams and KZread for the free flow of experience and information. Quite a point of pride to have earned a call sign. I'm limited with the frequencies I can use with my license and that provides the drive to accomplish the next ticket. 73. KJ5ATV

Haha. This is good fun. I've never done fox hunting but I've always wished for this. I know as a kid I wanted this really badly but I had no radio club close to me to get to do that. Maybe I will do it now when I'm a lot older hahaha. Cherrs and 73. Thanks for sharing.

For very advanced hunts, put a short green wire as the antenna on your microfox and bury it under the grass with just the green wire hanging out. Extremely hard to find. Another trick I've used is hiding it at the base of a powerline guy wire and wrapping the antenna wire around the guy. It'll radiate off of the ground system for several pole spans up and down the power line. Great fun! 😈 Only recommended for very advanced hunters - don't do this to your first timers!

Fun Video! Perhaps a little more info on the basics of locating a transmitter and "shooting bearings".

Hello, in my area there is an illegal FM radio on 107.9. Do you think I can locate it using this technique? It's a large radius though I get that radio on 2 locations 20km+ apart. Does it need to be another type of antenna?

Using this technique yes. You might need a slightly larger antenna though

Really want to run a fox hunt or even take part in one some time… Would be totally up my street but not a popular thing here in EI… Not sure when the last one was held in Ireland.

The receiver is pretty simple, but the 1,500-15,000 km long antenna will be a bear to drag around.

Do you think i could successfully hunt a GMRS repeater jammer in a big city with an RTL-SDR and maybe a 6+dB gain yagi? Otherwise, what inexpensive or aexond hand equipment could i possibly get? Budget of $250

Yes you possibly could with just the SDR and directional antenna. Just take signal strength measurements at various locations to try and pinpoint

@@HamRadioDX I think it might be hard, I suspect the jamming transmitter is using a directional antenna and low power, but if I can intercept that I'll be on track. Thanks. I also suspect it's a two radio setup, so probably not mobile

This is a bit off topic, sort of. I purchased a Ford territory and want to install half a dozen or so radios. What's the best place to mount them an method of feeding them into the vehicle? I'm thinking of having roof racks with a solid plate or metal basket on to mounting antennas on it. Thanks for suggestions in advance, or for suggesting someone else to ask. Ie, a website or ham. T-hunting is a great sport, but nowhere near as popular as it was back in its heyday. There should be a lot more of it, but I guess like ham radio in general these days, not much interest among the aging ham demographic.

Maybe put EVEN MORE commercials in your videos haha
