Finding a 1 Metre Flathead in Old Oyster Leases - Spearfishing NSW Australia - Bugsy Fishing Ep 23

In Episode 23 Bugsy takes us underwater in search of flathead in a beautiful NSW estuary system. The target is Dusky Flathead in the 36cm to 70cm range in line with the recently introduced slot size limit in NSW Australia. The last few years have brought a lot of rainfall with the La Niña weather pattern. This has negatively affected the visibility and meant there have not been many good days for spearfishing in NSW Australia. With the weather pattern moving back to El Niño the rain is easing and the waters are clearing up. This provides an opportunity go spearfishing for the humble flathead. One of the best eating fish Australia has to offer. Join Bugsy on this underwater adventure.

As an old spearo as far as I recall it's illegal to spear in esturaries. Spearing sedentary ambush predators is a fairly lame activity too. As for making a large scale video production of my marine persuits, spearing, fishing and surfing it never occured to me. That was left to those too lame to participate. Not many then. Now it seems mandatory. What's wrong with the ocean, why spear in esturaries ? Oh yeh you told us, too afraid of sharks. I've got some really bad news for you, keep spearing and soon enough your going to have an unpleasant surprise. Especially in silted shallow water, your safer in deeper clear water.

Hi Greg, the NSW DPI FishSmart app is a great place to check what is and is not allowed in NSW. It has some handy maps which they update as regulations change. I'd luv to see some vids of your marine pursuits, sounds like you have a lot of wisdom about the ocean others would benefit from. It's an enjoyable hobby. Totally agree with you mate. I feel a lot safer in the open ocean spearfishing in the clear water than in the estuaries. Hope you have had a good weekend

@@bugsyfishing as for me making video and photos I'll leave that to others who have the time and motivation. I don't even have a brag mat. In the last week I've released 4 flathead over 65 in the water. I don't enjoy killing but I do keep a fish when I want one for the table. What I find is that the promoting of one's aqua activities in our special places soon results in those places very quickly becomming crowded. Story of my life. I'm greatful that I had it at it's best though. Thank you for not exposing your own playgroud because if you do you will live to regret it.
