The Nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) is one of the most venomous snakes of Europe. It is common in Croatia, Montenegro or Greece. Nose-horned vipers are very variable in color. We recently visited Croatia and Montenegro for a summer holiday, but could not resisted to look for snakes a bit! In this video you will see how we caught 4 vipers, then we filmed and photographed them it in their habitat.

What an interesting snake, quite the face! I like how they know they are back in their home territory! Isn’t that awesome? You both are kind people, I’m happy to see you workin so well together in safety. Those little ones a feisty little critters. 😮 I am assuming they could give you a world of hurt, even being that small. What an eagle eye you have! It would have bitten me twice with my eyesight!

@@LivingZoology that's great to hear, I hope you enjoyed, and brought back some documentation material for us as well 😉😊 Funny coincidence: I just arrived at the cech border the moment you commented. Never been here before, but unfortunately I'm here with work and have to leave in couple of hours again, so I just saw the border 😅😂 but I'm positive I can explore your country soon enough. 🤞 Is there any chance to hit you up via e-mail (since I have no Facebook or Instagram)?

You shouldn't be suprised. This species, in Croatia commonly known as 'poskok', can often be found on trees, especially at the end of summer and in autumn. During this period, nose-horned vipers climb trees, bask in the sun on the branches, and actively hunt, often targeting young birds. Also, female individuals are known for giving birth to live young from trees (the offspring fall directly to the ground). Hand bites are common as people might unknowingly grab them while on branches or catch them with their hands while picking olives or grapes, or walking in the woods.

The first one was actually pretty big for a nose horned viper :) european vipers are usually rather short, something like 60-70 cm is already not bad

great, as usual ! I was travelling a lot of time through Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia, only for ammodytes ! Why you dont use HexArmor gloves ? its less traumatic for middle size snakes or short fangs, and easier for you. Too many manipulation to get the snake in the bag IMO

  • @LivingZoology

Thank you! This is an amazing species, we even have it in our logo! It was the first venomous snake species we found together 🙂 We tried those gloves several times and we rather use tongs (Matej is really good with them 😉). Tongs need to be used by an experienced person and we only use gentle tongs with rubber. From our experience snakes are stressed a lot in gloves, they see that they were caught by someone and bite. It would be still good to have them in our equipment, because they are handy in some situations, we agree!

When we can, we try to get our footage in situ. But to get the professional footage we usually need to work with the snake a bit. If we for example find several individuals of similar age and color, we catch only one and film that one. Here we wanted to show the color variability, so we wanted to get some footage of each individual, but we did not spend much time with them.
