Kenyans will never revolt because we are the most tribal country in the world. I have seen comments from people justifying these irrartional tax policies just because they are from the same tribe with the President. We have refused to disagree based on policies. All we want to disagree on is tribe. That whatever Billow says as an expert I will reject because he is attacking the competance of my tribe, that now has the chance to eat tax revenue. It doesn't matter whether the landlord locks my house due to unpaid rent, what Kenyans care about is that I am a Kalenjin, and my President is Kalenjin. Whether he is incompetent or not, I will defend him for as long as he doesn't change his tribe. And if he decides to welcome other tribes that I am currently insulting, I will welcome them as well so that we gang up to insult the remaining 40 tribes. We have replaced hakuna matata with " welcome to Kenya, we are proud tribalists. What is your tribe"?

We are simply reaping the rewards of ethnicity infused by our political father's 60 years ago, such political narratives have poisoned our minds and not easy to reverse. For a very long time, our voting pattern has evolved around one man, "Mzee" , He has been a perennial enemy and a theme in every election. The Kenyan government should live within its means. You don't need a budget of Ksh 3.6 trillion when you can barely collect Ksh 2.7 trillion. Cut the expenditure by removing the 50 CAS taking away Ksh 100m every month. We don't even need any of them. We don't need Ksh 700m for office of spouses. We don't need over Ksh 2 billion for vehicles and furniture. Why do government officials need new Prados to drive within Nairobi where roads are good, then book flights to go to rural areas for official functions? I attended a conference in Rwanda where the Minister of Education came to open the conference in one car carrying his diver, bodyguard and himself. Why do ours move in convoys wasting government fuel and seeking per diem? If you are to reward political cronies like Mudavadi, put them in existing institutions the way Wetangula got speaker, Muturi AG, and the others. What is this office that Mudavadi occupies? You develop economically by using your scarce resources to address your unlimited needs in a productive way. What we are doing is spending our loans on leisure then telling us you want to give us houses when we already have. A house is useless when I'm sick and in the hospital accumulating hospital bills. First make health free, then we will be healthy to afford and live in those houses.

Today I will loudly say something that I have been whispering to my friends… I am happy Ruto became president, for Kenyans to see who he really is. See, the guy used to pose as the brightest leader since Kenya’s independence. He actually believed he was better than Kibaki and Uhuru combined, and would provide a kind of leadership that has never experienced before in the continent. He convinced his followers on the same, and they would confidently tell anyone who cared to listen that in terms of governing and inspiring generations to come, Ruto would beat Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thomas Sankara, Barack Obama and Winston Churchill’s records. Well, there was no evidence to prove he had such potential but they believed he had it, just like Mackenzie’s followers believed they would meet Jesus after fasting to death. Ruto and his followers also believed he was a genius who had way better ideas of managing a country in crises, and would do better than any president on earth who had to lead his people through the Covid-19 and Ukraine crises. By being president, Ruto’s underbelly has been exposed. He is a clueless and a rudderless fellow who spent the first 5 years as deputy president making deals and building a financial war chest, then spent the next 5 campaigning. He only sharpened his political and money making skills, but never learnt a thing about governing and managing a country. Mrs. Obama at one time said "Being President Doesn’t Change Who You Are-It Reveals Who You Are”.-

When you seek IMF help, they normally advice that before they do, the soveriegn (people of Kenya) must suffer 1st. Tax will go up and less exemptions will be done. No meaningful development will be done in the next 2-3 years.

What matters is the government of the day. What is it doing to make things better. Having 50 CAS doesn't indicate that they care much. The problem is the present government, not the past that we removed. We want solutions, but they are adding us problems.

That's the caliber of " leaders " Kenyans elect. They are arrogant, dishonest , and selfish people who think that we are incapable of analyzing issues and debunking their embarrassing lies! Most of them are actually party puppets as if parties vote!

Am so glad I listened to this well organised discussion. Billow God needs people like you to be upfront in this country. Honest and a solver of issues. Not biased at all. I think if our leaders were like you then we would be a great nation right now.

We as Kenyans be visiting state house and we won't leave because that is where all the money will be going!

How the hell do you deny students financial assistance and then go ahead to allocate nearly 1 billion to the offices of your spouses, appoint your friends to government, put up more positions to your political allies and just spend money frivolously and anyhow? To make it worse, Ruto has managed to convince everyone that he is not part of the reason we are in this mess. His friends got dam contracts, the same eurobond money that is to be paid now, and they squandered all of it. They allocated even more money to build ghost stadiums, none of which can be seen right now. They even looted NYS and NHIF institutions to the ground. I hope those who voted for him go to sleep everyday and think of the moment they marked his picture on that ballot paper.

It is said that BAD THINGS HAPPEN WHEN GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING. it's all up to Kenyans to either choose suffering by keeping silent or lead an uprising and remove the suffering.

Julius Nyerere was blessed with Wisdom. The single best thing he did was fix tribalism. Everything else can flow from there. Kenya is built on a house of cards. The tribalism issue will boil until it is out of control. So people like Ruto who think they will lie and use force, and put tribal structures in place will produce unsustainable solutions. Instead of curbing spending and increasing the prices of exports to combat inflation he is taxing the "idiots" the people he believed he fooled, not worthy of his respect. It's worse than people think...

Why doesn't Kenya ever think of cutting expenses? Like I have said before, parliamentarian, executive, judiciary should cut their salaries by 60%. They are all overpaid. Close some Embassies. Stop paying for embassy staff to send their kids to private schools when they can go to public school for free. Stop paying allowances. Kenya is the only country I know that pays parliamentarians allowances for sitting. Sit during your regular work hours. Cut all trips. Don't order any new cars. Don't hire your friends and relatives just to give them jobs. KENYANS JOIN MAANDAMANO! REVOLT.

People have power. Join MAANDAMANO until your govt listens to you.

Mr. Birrow - to pay VAT thru Electronic Invoice that is the write thing, so we can avoid all loopholes and this is the system using from rich countries. The proposed tax regime will make those with money not to get into business. Why? if you can pay your bills and live comfortably, why expose yourself to potential risks. Yet if the tax regime was simple, effective and friendly, we would be rushing to stay in businesses and get into cottage industries hence expand taxable business pool and create employment.I have heard people now resigning from places where they are shareholders, deactivating registered companies to reduce exposure and some are contemplating reducing staff so that they have manageable risks with statutory deductions and remittances. I am thinking of doing the same.That is called killing the economy from the core.

The initiator of these tax policies, must be a very smart person,,,why??...he knows his audience so well. It's not a rocket science to tell that majority of those employed in Kenya belong to the middle class. This group is neither hot nor cold, they have hitherto taken a bystander role in everything, they are never bothered nor complain, when prices increase, they can still afford though with reduced income, in case of any subsidies, they are even better. Unfortunately this has made them easy targets for the tax man.

What do you mean? You can tell ZAKAYO to sell the Kenyans who blindly voted him in.

When someone comes to your interviews, they should say which side of the political class they’re on. Speaking on these issues one should be objective and apolitical and only professional opinions should be given. Everyone who knows about assets and liabilities know very well how kenya is under debt. This makes the debt payment an obligation above anything else. To raise revenue and afford to pay, better way of raising taxes should be employed. The housing levy should be scrapped, but the person income taxes amendment should be passed…those who earn more should pay more. He earns more and he doesn’t want to be taxed.

People are already paying more. 30% of 10shs = 3shs; 30% of 100shs = 30shs. Those earning more are already paying more. Remember your salary will also rise to his level someday peoples should learn to see beyond the tip of their noses.

@@lawrencekimani6658 Before you give me your ignorance, kindly research the taxation levels of other countries within the same level as Kenya. I'm happy to be taxed? absolutely no! But as a citizen, you need to pay taxes to get better services. Taxing over 30% to those earning more than 500k is simple: reducing income inequality is a top priority. What I hope for is these taxes will be put into projects that have a direct impact on the lives of Kenyans.

@Geoffrey Mwenda He already said Kenya is the 2nd most taxed country in Africa. Also I illustrated using a dummies math how higher earners are already paying more. Over taxing is counter productive, it reduces spending power, less consumption less revenue. The higher earners also finance other personal projects and hobbies that employ people. Take that extra away, they do away with the hobby and that's a job or more lost. It's very easy to support such punitive measures because you are happy someone you envy is being targeted but the overall effect is greatly adverse.

You are awfully wrong. Kenya's public debt is slightly over 9 trillion shillings and racing towards 10 trillion. And over 60% of the Govts resources is channeled towards debt repayment which is pretty bad. The amounts you are quoting could have led to massive defaults in debt repayment.

If William Ruto means well for the nation, arrest the kemsa looters, Covid millionaires,NHIF scandals,police container scandles,FKF scandal, all this money can be recovered and distributed to banks and Kenya will be rich within months
