I have a fair number of Icon tools (including a fair bit of what you showed today) and have been really happy with all of them. The long ratcheting double-box are sneaky-useful - the non-ratcheting end is super-shallow but gives you lots of clearance to get on the head of a hard-to-reach fastener. Anyway - go get them messy!

Too put things in perspective from my point o view, when i was 16, i was able too remove a 350 small block engine from my 72RS Camaro, separate the transmission, remove engine, replace said engine with a junkyard motor, reistall used motor, with nothing more than a set of tools looking like your original set of craftsman 3/8ths drive sockets, a few wrenches, a small floor jack with two jack stands. I did rent or barrow an engine lift. I look back and wonder how i did it, but did do it! I have alot of tools now, 38 years later that would have made it a whole lot Easier!😂

I recently upgraded to Icon and have no regrets. Quality & price made it easy to choose. Long reach flex head wrenchs are really great to have. $180 on sale. I'm looking into 90 tooth rachet but have many 3/8 & 1/2 " ones. Guess their great in tight spots but not good for torque. 25% discounts ends tomorrow. I'm 23:05, going to sleep on it. 😂 look into the tool, you can add extension to any wrench for leverage. It's great to have for these knuckle buster bolts. 25:25 The included holders are definitely a bonus for organization. Filled my 5 drawer toolbox. May need to upgrade to Series 3. 37:28

Icon tools get, in my view, very unfair treatment and bad press. We have some on our ranch and they work great, are of amazing quality (especially for what you pay). For the sockets, I personally think that the Pittsburgh Pro line is just as nice (maybe within 90-95%) and a third of the price. They are made by Apex Tool in Taiwan and are identical to the Tekton sockets, just with different stamps. The Icon ratchets do seem very nice. My favorite Icon tool is their version of the Knipex Cobra. They work for everything from a nutcracker to a pipe wrench! I love those! 😊😊😊

With the adjustable heads... aren't they a lot weaker at the joint than a whole solid wrench/wratchet? If you get into a serious torque application, would you feel safe using it? Lifetime warranty is nice but it'd be super inconvenient to have to drive and replace it during a project lol.

Good luck with the new set, I hope it serves you well👍. As far as tooth count is concerned though I have no real data on the subject I feel the higher tooth count weakens the anvil and or the pawls due to the distance spacing between the teeth. I know that the more teeth in the ratchet the better to tighten and loosen nuts or bolts in tight places. I guess I am just nitpicking. Let us know how the tools fair out in the long run. Kudos from NYC🗽.

I mean technically your box end wrenches are reversible you just flip it over and as a mechanic you'll pry grow to hate your open end set having the switch as it often gets flicked when you use them. I ditched my open ends and just went with no 15 degree offset. I think the offsets have their place, but are usually more of a pain in my opinion.

Icon is in a whole other league than DeWalt and especially Husky. Icon is a "tool truck alternative" brand, similar to gearwrench and tekton. There 95% of the performance at half the cost of tool truck brands like snap on. In fact most tests have shown icon to consistently stand toe to the with snap on, tekton, and gearwrench. Husky doesn't come close, and DeWalt is better than husky but still not at icon levels, with exception to DeWalts torque wrenches, for some reason DeWalt absolutely nails it with their torque wrenches, I think they even outperformed snap on.

Also when you order from their website, they give you credit$ towards next tool purchases that you won't get buying from Amazon - found this out after buying the set. Many of the ICON tools are the same as the Carlyle tools (sold by NAPA auto). The Carlyle line tends to be as expensive, if not even just a little bit more for some things. The in-house NAPA brand has long had a really good reputation and people would recommend them as alternatives if you were looking for tool truck quality, but at a more reasonable price (still not cheap). These are quality Taiwanese tools regardless of which branding mark you prefer. I do not think there is any other company that is selling these for less money. The very few problems some of the earlier tools had (the ratchet, most notably) are long since fixed at this point. In fact, its kind of respectable how quickly they came out with a Version 2 as soon as people started pointing out the issue. I think the company realized they had a good thing going with the ICON line and reputations can be destroyed almost overnight if it becomes known that a tool is junk. They did a minor redesign on the inside of the ratchets, and now they work great. People have torque tested the newer ones and they are right up there with the best of them. Very difficult to break the flex heads externally, or to bind up the internals.

  • @alexjohnson6462

My only concern at this point (too premature to tell, unfortunately) is how well the chrome plating will hold up. This seems to be a problem with a lot of modern tools. Manufacturers seem like in their quest to chisel every penny of profit out of you they can, they are doing really thin chrome plating, or inadequate undercoatings. Snap-On brags about how good their coatings are, and to be honest I dont think most companies are putting in the same effort they are at making a tool last fifty-plus years, like most old tools could easily do. My fathers Craftsman and SK ratchets from decades ago are still pretty flawless chrome plating wise despite the mass abuse and humid environment we have kept them in. I am skeptical that many modern brands are coated as good as they used to be. Many modern companies seem heck bent on saving fifty cents in chemicals during the coating process at the expense of durability. I really hope my shiny chrome ICON tools hold up. I spent the extra money hoping these would be "lifetime" tools.

Made in Taiwan like plenty of Matco and Mac tools stuff. Keep overpaying on the tool trucks, a fool and their money are soon parted 😊

What snap on tools do you have? I don't buy anything from snap on that's made in China. Likely there is another manufacturer making them, but 90% of the tools on the snap on truck are made in USA and precisely 0% of icon or harbor freight tools are made in USA. Icon is a waste of money when you get get brands such as mayhew, proto, and lisle that have high quality made in USA tools often cheaper than icon.

@@KniFz have have 0 snap on junk ICON tools are 100% snap on especially the warranty....if you like wasting $$$ on tools that you can buy 1/2 the price and 100% same quality...then your wasting your $$$.....keep making your payments for tools that you'll never ever get to resale for the price you paid...LOL

@@417plasma6 soon as you said anything about selling tools that told me everything I need to know. Icon is great for DIY but in a professional environment there is no replacement for snap on I can guarantee that icon would not go through the same beating I’ve seen snap on go through.
